Note | BIRTH: John Porter, the son of Nathaniel and his wife Joanna born 6 Sept. 1728. (Barbour Collection of Farmington Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2w1, Vol 12, p. 312.) GUILFORD: The Hand family is from Guilford. After the death of her husband Deborah Hand and her children moved to Bethlehem where other members of the Hand family were living. It was there Deborah Hand married Nathaniel Porter and her daughters Deborah and Elizabeth met and married Nathaniel's sons John and Thomas. The Porter family were never in Guilford. From a search of Vital Records of Guilford (FHL film 1,428,110) and the mortality schedule of Guilford (FHL film 3025) it seems obvious they never lived there. No Porters even in the index. WOODBURY: 1751 - John and Deborah married in Woodbury - John Porter mentioned in Deborah's father's probate: "John Porter of Woodbury, husband to one of the daughters of John Hand, late of Guilford, deceased, exhibits...real estate of the deceased...to be distributed. John Hand's sisters Deborah Porter, Elizabeth Hand and Submit Hand are mentioned. Family History Library film 4354) 1752 to 1760 -John and wife Deborah bought and sold land (Land Records) 1758 John Named administrator of his father's probate in Woodbury. WOODBURY LAND RECORDS: Nov. 22, 1752, John and Deborah Porter of Woodbury sold land to Elizabeth Hand of Woodbury for 350 pounds in the "North Purchase of Woodbury." It is lands, house and barns which "Wee, the said John and Deborah Porter purchased of Nathaniel Porter Jun." (Vol 10 p. 130, FHL film 6147, item 1.) John Porter and Deborah of Woodbury named Thomas Porter of Woodbury "brother." (March 24, 1754, Vol 9 p. 275, FHL film 6152) On April 16 1756 Thomas sold land "a piece of land that John Porter and Deborah his wife sold to Elizabeth Hand (mistakenly written "Hurd"), last wife of Thomas," in Woodbury. (April 16 1756, Vol 10, p. 138, F.H.L. film 6153.) April 19, 1756, John sold land in Bethlehem. One acre is a piece of land John and Deborah Porter sold to Elizabeth Hand (written "Hurd"), "the late wife of Thomas Porter." (Vol 10, p. 138, FHL #6152.) John Porter and Deborah Porter his wife of Woodbury I the county of Litchfield and colony of Connecticut in New England for the consideration of thirteen pounds lawfull money received to our full satisfaction of Peter Welton of Waterbury in New Haven County and Colony aforesaid do give, grant bargain, sell, and confirm unto the said Peter Welton one certain Tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in Bethlehem in said Woodbury being in that tier of Lotts in part of fifth and sixth lotts butted and bounded as follows (viz) north by highway east o John Minors south on Samuell Church and said Weltons own land and west on John Minor or Capt Frisby containing four acres and an half it being part of the lott of land that belonged to Elizabeth Hand and since to John Hand late of Guilford deceased and lately set of by distribution to Deborah the wife of the said John Porter. June 21, 1760 (Woodbury Land Records)(Vol. 13, p. 20, FHL film 6147, item 2) (Note, Peter Weldon, John Minor, Samuel Church and Jacob Frisby were all brothers-in-law of John Porter.) BETHLEHEM Bethlehem was divided off Woodbury and the Porter family became part of the new town. 1774 - John Porter remarried after Deborah's death 1779 - His son was named John Jr., indicating John Sr. was still alive (see source below) 1790 - No John Porter in Woodbury or Bethlehem in the 1790 Census 1793 - His second wife died at Bethlehem, and was listed as a widow. John obviously had died before that. DEATH: His wife Rebecca Porter was listed as "widow" at her death in Bethlehem in 1793. He obviously died between 1774 when he married her and 1793 when she died. A search of men named John Porter on the 1790 Census in Connecticut reveals 2 in Danbury, Fairfield; 1 in Fairfield, Fairfield; 2 in East Hartford; 1 in Lebanon, Windham; 1 in Ellington, Tolland. None of these are in Litchfield, let alone Woodbury. I believe John was dead by then, but no death record, no probate. He was not in the tax list of 1776: "Property Owners in Ancient Woodbury in 1776" No John or Rebecca Porter. ("American Revolution Bicentennial, 1776, Woodbury," Bicentennial Committee F: 104 W88w6, no page number, NEHGS Library) However, in John Jr.'s Revolutionary War Pension Application James and Ruth Eggleston signed an affidavit saying when John Jr. lived in their house in Watertown in 1779 he was "then John Jr.," indicating John Sr. must have still been alive. In that case, he died between 1779 and the 1790 Census. PROBATE: In his father's probate, John was appointed administrator Sept 11, 1758. (Woodbury Probate Records, Vol. 4 p. 52, F.H.L. film 6172.) There is no probate in Woodbury or Bethlehem for John Porter. 1781-last tax record in Bethlehem MARRIAGE 1. John married first Deborah Hand, daughter of John Hand and Deborah (Bishop.) She was born 2 April 1732 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut and moved to Woodbury with her family after her father died in 1739. She died at Bethlehem sometime before 1774 when John remarried, but there is no record of death or burial. DOCUMENTATION Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, "John Porter m. Deborah Hand." (Family History Library book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 213.) The great confusion surrounding this marriage is that her mother was also named Deborah (Bishop) Hand, wife of John Hand, deceased. When John died Deborah and her children moved to Bethlehem, where she married John's father Nathaniel Porter, as his third wife. She moved her household into the Porter home, and in time her daughters Elizabeth and Deborah married the Porter Brothers, Thomas and John. Thus, the Deborah Hand who married Nathaniel Porter was the mother and the Deborah Hand who married John Porter was the daughter. Also found in Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, (Family History Library film 3803, p. 32.) In the Talcott Genealogies the Hand family of Guilford is listed in detail. The marriage of Deborah to Nathaniel and her daughter Deborah to John Porter were noted. (Family History Library film 4352) Further proof of this marriage is in the probate of John Hand, Deborah's father: At a court of probate held in Guilford May 3, 1751 John Porter of Woodbury, husband to one of the daughters of John Hand, late of Guilford, dec’d exhibited the d-ris-ron (distribution) of the real estate of the said dec’d which was mede? by the freeholders appointed by this court to divide the same which was appointed in court and recorded to the recorded distribution on the real estate of John Hand, dec’d. Land distribution between all children, Elizabeth, John and Submit Hand and Deborah Porter. Land bounds on Abraham Doude, East on Hammanost River, “the dividing line between Killingly and Guilford,” Benjamin Hand and land formerly belonging to the heirs of old aged Joseph Hand which he willed to his grand children, John Hand and Esther Hand.” Dated May 2, 1751. (Guilford Probates, Vol. 4, p. 692, FHL film 4354.) NAME DOCUMENTATION It is recorded in the Barbour Collection John Porter married Deborah Hand. His father Nathaniel/Nathan is recorded to have also married Deborah Hand, which prompted all sorts of errors in family records. One record gives Nathan's wife's name Deborah Hurd, and later one of her daughters was recorded as Elizabeth Hurd, both errors, probably of transcription, but perpetuated for years. Research has proven Nathaniel married Deborah the mother, and his son John married Deborah the daughter five years later. We're certain they were both named Deborah Hand from probate documents of John Hand of Guilford in 1745 and 1751. In the latter document John Porter of Woodbury and his wife Deborah Porter are named. The confusion between the surnames Hurd and Hand continued into Land Records and even into the history of the town of Woodbury. It is impossible to know how or when the mistake began, but recorders and clerks perpetuated the mistake for years. Only through a thorough study of probate and land records was the tangle straightened out. Once the Hand family of Guilford was understood, everything made sense. 2. John married 2nd, Rebecca Joslin 23 June 1774 at Bethlehem. She was born in East Haven, New Haven, Connecticut in 1741, the daughter of Nathaniel and Abigail (Abbot) Joslin. She died 28 March 1793 at Bethlehem, by then a widow. Her sister Abigail had married John's brother Nathaniel Jr. in 1745 and the families had become acquainted. When Deborah died John married Abigail's sister Rebecca. For her it was a first marriage. DOCUMENTATION Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, "John Porter Md. Rebecca Joslin."
