Note | BIRTH Benjamin Porter's Pension record gives his birth: 10 May 1760 at Bethlehem, Litchfield, Connecticut. (Pension & Bounty Land Applications, Ref S-23376 Family History Library film 971952) His Revolutionary War Pension record states his birth place and date. However, it cannot be documented with Vital Records. A letter written to Kathleen Gath, the town clerk of Bethlehem April 17, 2006, was answered with the reply "I checked land records and can find no record of Benjamin Porter here." A search of vital records in the book "History of Ancient Woodbury," Vol 3, by William Cothren, 1871, (Family History Library film included searches for births, marriages and deaths in Woodbury, Bethlehem, Roxbury, Stratford, and Southbury. No Benjamin Porter was written there. 1790 CENSUS: Benjamin Porter listed in Litchfield Town, but lived in Goshen innumerated with the town of Litchfield. 2 males over 16 Benjamin and one other); 2 males under 16 (Levi and Philo); 4 females in the household Rozanna, Deborah, Anna and one other). (Benjamin and one other man there) (Index to Litchfield 1790 Census, Family History Library 974.6 X22vLm 1790) 1800 CENSUS: Although they lived in Sangerfield, Oneida, N.Y. at that time, they are enumerated in Chenango County, New York (Family History Library book 974.7 x22j, 1800, p. 902.) 1 male over 40 (Benjamin), 1 female 26-40 (his wife), 1 male and two females under ten, 1 male and 1 female 10-16, 1 male and 1 female 16-25. (In "Our Country and Its People: Oneida County," by Daniel W. Wager it states that when the 1800 census was taken, Sangerfield was a part of Chenango County. It became separate in Apr. 1804. (Family History Library book 974.762 H2w, Pt. 1, pp. 146-149, 533.) 1810 CENSUS: Genesee County, N.Y., p. 104. One male under 10, one over 45. One female under 10. (Federal census index, New York 1810, by Ronald Vern Jackson, Family History Library book 974.7 X22j 1810) 1820 CENSUS: Batavia, Genesee County, N.Y., p. 1017: 1 male under 10 and 1 over 45. 1 female 16-26 and one over 45. Persons engaged in farming, 0; persons engaged in manufacture, 1. 1820 New York Census Index, by Ronald Vern Jackson, Gary Ronald Teeples, Family History Library book 974.7 X2j 1820. 1840 CENSUS: Alexander, Genesee, N.Y., living with his son Philo in Alexander, New York Revolutionary War pensioners in the 1840 census, by Arthur C. M. Kelly, p. 456. REVOLUTIONARY WAR John and Benjamin Porter listed among Revolutionary War soldiers from Woodbury, History of Ancient Woodbury, Family History Library book 974.6 H2cw, p. 778-787. Since they were the only men in the right age group, it is likely these brothers enlisted together. Benjamin enlisted in Bethlehem; Served 1776 and 1777. Served at Long Island Sound and West Point. Enlisted at Goshen Feb. 1778 and served to the end of the war "in the continental establishment" under Col John Thuman of New Haven. Later served At Stony Point, Morristown, N.J. Granted Pension Sept 2, 1833, age 73. No wife mentioned. (Pension & Bounty Land Applications, Ref S-23376 Family History Library film 971952) Pension application lists the following service record: 1. Entered service at Bethlehem, Ct. Militia, Col. Moseley 2. Enlisted Jan. 1776 in Capt. Israel Chapman's unit. After 2 months discharged verbally. 3. Enlisted again at Bethlehem, marched to the Saw-Pits on Long Island Sound. In "Record of Service of Conn. Men in the Revolution," Vol. 2, FHL book 974.6, M2ca, p. 539 his record for this was stated "Served in Capt David Olmstead's Company, Col. Roger Enos Regt, on the Hudson Saw Pits, June 3 to Sept 1, 1778." 4. Enlisted, Bethlehem, early July, 1777 in the Ct. Militia under Capt Omstead. Served 3 months. He is listed in Capt. Olmsted's company in the book "History of Kent, Ct", p. 33 in a company composed of several towns in Litchfield. (Family History Library book 974.61/K1, H2a, pp. 31-35) 5. Enlisted Bethlehem, marched to West Point to help build a fort. 6. Capt. Nathan Chapman's Comp., Col. Baldwin, "Paid for service from Dec. 28, 1777 to March 1, 1778." "Record of Service of Conn. Men in the Revolution," p. 524. 7. Enlisted, Bethlehem early in Feb. 1778 under Col. Canfield for 2 months. 8. Enlisted at Bethlehem, marched to Stamford on Long Island to guard the fort 9. Enlisted "in Goshen where he resided" early April 1778. Served in "the Continental establishment," Gen. Persons, Col John Thuman of New Haven in the Ct. Line. Served 9 months, first at Peakskill Hill, N.Y., then at Stony Point, then to Morristown, N.J. where he remained until discharge. A later correction (p. 11 of Pension record) stated he served under Col. Russell, Continental Service. 10. Enlisted at Woodbury Sept 22, 1779 and discharged Jan. 15, 1780, 8th Conn. Reg. Commanded by Col Isaac Sherman ("Rolls and Lists of Conn. Men in the Revolution," Vol. 1, , F.H.. book 974.6, M2r, Vol 1, p. 79) This enlistment is also mentioned in "Connecticut Men in the Revolution" p. 79. There it states Benjamin Porter from Woodbury is found in "Return of the Eight Months Men" in the 8th Conn. Regt, commanded by Isaac Sherman. PROFESSION: Both Benjamin Sr and Jr. were carpenters (Saul's Notes on Genesee County People, Vol. 5. (by Correspondence July 8, 2005 from Paula J. Meyer, Librarian, Genesee Historical Library.) BETHLEHEM: (1760-1778) Enlisted 8 times at Bethlehem. In April 1778 he enlisted at Goshen "where he resided." Pension Record) Since his mother died and his father remarried early in 1779, he and his sister Elizabeth apparently moved to Goshen before the marriage. GOSHEN: (1778-1796) Resided in Goshen 14 years after the Rev. War. Since he enlisted there in 1778 (Pension Application), he apparently lived there from 1778-1796, a total of 18 years. In Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 380, it states: "Benjamin Porter (Jun.), a native of Goshen, Conn. was born November 8, 1793. The author's paternal grandfather, Deacon Benjamin Porter, was a native of the same place and traced his ancestry to England." (Family History Library book 977.428 D3j) It is obvious Goshen was the home town of Benjamin and Rosanna Porter after their marriage. Benjamin Porter admitted to the Goshen Congregational Church 1793 (History of Goshen, by L.M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1, H2h, p. 103. In a letter from Barbara L. Breor, Goshen Town Clerk, April 20, 2006, in possession of Janet S. Porter a copy of Goshen file cards (no reference) Benjamin, who moved to Sangerfield, N.Y., is incorrectly listed as the son of Elijah Porter of Farmington. (Ref for this card is Ch VO 7 1-77) and brother to Seth Porter of Goshen ("Wife of Andrew Bailey,"p. 99 but no reference given, Breor letter) Congregational Church Records of Goshen Connecticut, First Church of Christ 1791-1855, Family History Library film 4427: "Benjamin Porter, Admitted to the church September 1, 1793, ( 1:316); Letter of recommendation to Sangersfield, N.Y., (undated, 1:245.)" "This man and family lived for some years at the house on the south side of the road near the Central Grave Yard in Goshen. He was a brother to Seth Porter the surveyor. Dismissed March 1806 to Sangerfield, N.Y." (Handwritten source, p. 77, undocumented; sent in a letter from Barbara L. Breor, Goshen Town Clerk, April 20, 2006, in possession of Janet S. Porter.) Seth, Lois and Benjamin Porter were listed together as children of Elijah Porter of Farmington. Elijah Porter's family is well documented to include Seth and Lois; but it did not include Benjamin. We now know that is incorrect. (JSP Aug, 2006) GOSHEN LAND RECORDS: First Land Record in Goshen in 1788 (Vol. 5, p. 221) Sold out in 1796 (Goshen Land Records, Vol. 9: 283, 296; Vol. 10: 156, 457) Goshen Grantee Index, Family History Library film 4416, Benjamin bought land in Goshen Dec 6, 1784 "John and Benjamin Porter, both of Goshen" "to their heirs and assigns," etc. mentioned 4 times. (brothers), August 8, 1787, August 23, 1791. Benjamin Porter appears as grantor twice in Sept. 1796 (He sold "the land, house and barn on which he now lives" in 1796.) Grantor Index, Family History Library film 4415: April 5, 1788, March 5, 1796, Nov. 7, 1796 (sold his house, land and barn in 1796.) SANGERFIELD, N.Y.: (1796-1802) "Dismissed (from Goshen, Connecticut) March 1800 to Sangerfield, N.Y," (Correspondence dated April 20, 2006, Barbara L. Breor, Goshen Town Clerk, with Janet Porter.) He resided in Sangerfield 6 years (Pension Application) Found there on 1800 Federal Census. BATAVIA, N.Y.: 1802-1841 "Benjamin Porter, Sr, learned carpentering early in life and removed from Conn. to N.Y. settling among the pioneers of Genesee County. Western New York was then a wilderness...Mr. Porter followed his trade and in due time arose to the dignity of a builder and contractor." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 380, Family History Library book 977.428 D3j) BATAVIA LAND RECORDS Sept, 1802 and Dec. 1803 (Batavia Land Records, Village of Attica, 1802-1840, Family History Library film 871,552, p. 2, 3. One of the property holders in Batavia as early as 1802 (Descriptive and Biog. Rec. of Gen. Co., N.Y., Family History Library book 974.792 H2n, p. 100.) Appointed overseer of the poor in Batavia, Mar 1, 1803, History of Genesee Co., N.Y., by Mary McCulley, Family History Library book 974.792 H2h, p. 49. Member of the Masonic Fraternity in Genesee County, N.Y. (Querie, NEGHR, Vol 61, Jan, 1907, p. 96) "Deacon Benjamin Porter elected to serve as trustee of the Congregational Society, later changed to "First Presbyterian Society of Batavia." (Historical Sketch of the Village of Batavia, Family History Library film 872579, item 2. p. 28-29) "Deacon of the Presbyterian Church who made the first public prayer and conducted the first religious service west of Genesee River, N.Y." (tombstone inscription.) DEATH Genesee County Soldiers Burial Record for Genesee Co., N.Y., Family History Library film 1,381,729, item 2, Old Batavia Cemetery. Birth 10 May 1760; death 24 August 1841. Rev. War service summarized. His wife named: Mrs. Rosannah Porter who died March 12, 1830, age 80. "Mr. Porter and his wife and six children were residents of Batavia before the courts of Genesee were organized in 1803." (Batavia Daily News, Apr. 29, 1926, p. 9, Family History Library film 871564.) Named Deacon Benjamin Porter Record of Burials, Batavia Cemetery, 1806-1880, Family History Library film 872579, item 1. In this record it was recorded he was born 1860 and died 1841, obviously it was intended to write born in 1760. TOMBSTONE: "The first man who held a religious meeting in Batavia or made a public prayer west of the Genesee River. He was a strict Presbyterian and instrumental in organizing the first society of that denomination in Batavia or within many miles of it." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 380, Family History Library book 977.428 D3j) RESEARCH NOTE: Early New England researchers, and thus IGI and Ancestral file list this man, Benjamin Porter born in Bethlehem, Litchfield, Ct., as the same man as the "Benjamin Porter of East Hartford." Since Benjamin Porter of East Hartford was proved to be there when he enlisted in the Revolutionary War and also in 1780, that is obviously not correct. (See RIN 152, Windsor Porter family file.) There were two men named Benjamin Porter apparently born the same year.. One stayed in Hartford and, according to vital records, Revolutionary War records, and land records, never went to Bethlehem. He may be the Benjamin Porter in Shelby, Orleans, New York in the Revolutionary War Pensioner Census of 1840. He was listed as being 80 years old--the exact age of the undisputed Benjamin Porter of Batavia, Genesee, New York because they were both born in 1760. (Ancestry.com search of Rev. War Pensioner Census, p. 92.) |
---|---|
Note | Their first child was born in Goshen in 1781. He enlisted at Bethlehem in 1776 and in Goshen in 1778, so apparently was a resident of Goshen by 1778. |
