(Family History Library book 977.417/R1 V8p, p. 35.) Documentation of his relationship to his father Daniel Cook Jr. is in land records #1: Goshen Town Clerk, Land records, 1739-1958; general index, 1739-1938 (Salt Lake City, Utah: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1948, 1987), Family History Library Film: 4422, Vol. 12, p. 484, Family History Library, 35 North West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3400. She died ...aged 3 years and was buried in Milton burying ground." (Also found on https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE222959) FAMILY CONNECTIONS: WOLCOTT FAMILY Litchfield, CT is the hometown of his mother Irene Churchill. Oliver Wolcott, also from Litchfield, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, an important general in the Connecticut Line in the Revolution, and Governor of Connecticut after the war. There was a family connection which apparently the Cooks held in high regard. Phineas Cook was grand nephew of Walter Cook whose wife was Ruhamah Collins. Ruhamah was first cousin of Lorainne Collins, wife of Oliver Wolcott. Obviously they were aware of the relationship because when Wilford Woodruff (who also had a distant family connection through Ruth Woodruff to the Porters) did temple work for the signers of the Declaration of Independence, he allowed Phineas W. Cook to do the work for Oliver Wolcott who was "a relative." (Journal of Mormon History 26:68) GOSHEN, CT Land: Deeds of Goshen, Conn, Vols 7 to 16, Family History Library films 4422 and 4423. Vol 10: 183, 191, 195; Vol 11: 495; Vol 12: 18, 19, 21, 22, 34-36 (Phineas sold 80 acres "he inherited from his father) on Jan. 13, 1829. This is the same day as the mortgage of the same property and then deeded back to Irene; 157, 173; Vol 13: 26, 500; Vol 14: 2, 6, 26, 27, 226, 326. (Phineas had considerable property "west of Goshen along the road toward Cornwall," evidently mortgaging themselves heavily to keep it. Vol. 15: 285 (Phineas sold 31 acres for $333.25, land next to the trip-hammer shop June 18, 1833; p. 497 Phineas and Irene leased 7 pieces of land to Daniel, their son, for 5 years, including the home farm of 80 acres with buildings, the Bunnel lot of 31 acres; the Wright lot of 22 acres with house and barn, the Baldwin lot and lot east of saw mill "together with the use of the sawmill standing near by the same." Daniel also agreed to pay the bills and pay off the debt and furnish room for his father's family in the house. (Family History Library film 4424.) (Also a lease agreement between Phineas and Irene Cook, Grantors and Daniel Cook, Grantee, dated 27 Sept, 1830. About the time Phineas and Irene left for Richland, Michigan, on October 2, 1836 his land "which had been bought by Daniel Cook, Sr., and passed to his son Daniel, and his grandson Phineas," was sold to his Uncle Moses. It included 74 acres and 142 rods with the mill and water rights and a second piece of 42 acres with the house. 1800 CENSUS: Daniel (along with Moses and Amasa) are enumerated in Goshen. 1 male 10-16; one male 16-26; and one male 26-45. Also, Gardner Asaph Churchill, The Churchill Family in America (United States: Published by the family of Gardner A. Churchill, 1904), Family History Library film 873835 Item 1, p. 367. No record exists for this marriage. It was after 1800 because Phineas was in that census in the household of his father Daniel Cook, listed in Litchfield Town, but living in Goshen. It was before 1807 because their first child was born in July of 1807. I have assigned the date of 1806 as their marriage date. Both Litchfield and Goshen Church and Vital records have been searched, but there is no record of the marriage. (JSP) |
