BORDER, WYOMING Joseph Wolcott and his brother William Cook went into business together in Border, Wyoming, just across the border from the northern tip of Bear Lake not far from Garden City, where most of their family lived. Several brothers from Garden City joined with them in proposing a ditch, submitting an affidavit to Uinta County, Wyoming, first on 28 July 1883 for “a dam to be hereafter constructed across said Bear River” in order to provide water for irrigation; and second on 23 September 1886 for a permit to dig a ditch twenty feet wide and four miles long, flowing westerly from the Bear River. Carl Cook and his brother Emerson, worked for him first in haying and in 1900 built a big barn for him. Of him, Carl in his diary reports, "J. W. or "Wolk" as we commonly spoke of him, was a real brother to me and my brothers. He was a kind hearted man with good "Common Sense" judgment and wide experience....He was devoted to the Church, had filled two regular missions, and was always a leader and valiant supporter of any public cause or improvement. His family also have been and are kind, friendly and devoted to the welfare and progress of their communities and the Church." Note | From the Autobiography of Joseph Wolcott Cook, p. 30: "During this summer, Chauncy Dustin and his wife lived with me and boarded the hands in haying. They hired Eliza Snow Bryson to help Jenny with the housework. While she was there, I persuaded her to marry me. On September 30, 1891, we were married in the Logan Temple. Chauncy Dustin made a filing on some land close to mine and moved to it. Lile, this is the pet name we had given my wife, and I began to make a home in earnest. Happiness was my lot once more after nearly seven years of loneliness." |
