Also found in "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7WB-562 : 11 February 2018), Jonathan Churchel, 25 Nov 1749; citing ; FHL microfilm unknown. BETHLEHEM, LITCHFIELD, CT The family was in the Bethlehem Society of Woodbury by 1748 when Jonathan's Uncle William came to Woodbury. The rest of the family soon followed. Woodbury land records, 8:126. Deed dated 3 November 1748, “William Churchill of Woodbury” bought land from David Lyman. (Family History Library film 6152) While his father was in Pennsylvania Jonathan Jr. was on the Bethlehem Tax rolls in 1771 and 1772 (Town Clerk, Woodbury Tax Records, 1771-1772. “Jonathan Churchill, Jr.," as searched in the Woodbury Town Clerk's Office by Bryson C. Cook.) VITAL RECORDS Family members are all listed on Litchfield Vital Records, but Woodbury Vital Records say the births took place there, probably because Jonathan's father stayed in Woodbury and the two towns were close to each other. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Following the defeat of the British at Boston the Continental Army prepared to defend New York City and Long Island. When the British forces threatened to attack, virtually every able-bodied man in Connecticut was called upon to support General Washington and defend New York. In 1776 Jonathan answered the call and fought in the battles of Long Island and New York. He served in Captain Hezekiah Leach's Company. A letter dated November, 1776, is preserved among his descendants, which he wrote from "saw pits in rye," meaning "rifle pits" in a rye-field on Long Island. (Churchill, The Churchill Family in America, 367.) The Connecticut militia were thoroughly defeated and retreated with the Continental Army. (Family History Library film 1025194) He and his brother Josiah are recorded as Revolutionary War enlistees, but it is likely all the brothers enlisted as well. (Sons of the American Revolution application, 506115. Jonathan and Josiah in Hartford, Connecticut : Connecticut Historical Society, 1909 "Lists and returns of Connecticut men in the Revolution, 1775-1783," 60,481.) (Family History Library book 974.6 B4c v. 12) Service in Revolutionary War: DAR Patriot Index, DAR, Washington D.C. 1966-1979, Vol. 1, p. 131 and Vol 2, p. 38. George Schweitzer, expert on war records, lists Jonathan with correct birth and death dates, and as having enlisted in the Cont. Mass 539311; but I believe that may be wrong. The Jonathan Churchill in that unit enlisted in Plymouth, Mass. and lived after the war in Vermont. (National Genealogical Society Revolutionary War Pension Applications, p. 104.) A man named Jonathan Churchill is also listed in the Mass. Revolutionary War Records Vol. 3, p. 459. "The Churchill Family in America," by Gardner A. Churchill says on p. 367 that he "served in Capt. Hezekiah Leach's Company. That may have been Jonathan III because in 1772 his father Jonathan Churchill II was in Wyoming County Pennsylvania. He is not on enlistement records there, but those records are poor, especially during Indian raids and the Wyoming Massacre of 1778. LITCHFIELD, TWP, CONNECTICUT In 1777 he purchased his first land eight or ten miles north in the town of Litchfield, then called Litchfield South Farms Society and which is now the town of Morris, Litchfield, Connecticut.(Litchfield land records, 9:162. Deed dated 14 April 1777, Jonathan Churchill of Woodbury bought land from Abijah Clemmons of Litchfield.) (Family History Library film 4746.) After 1777 Jonathan began to move his family from Bethlehem. The last record we find of him in his home town is on the 1778 Bethlehem tax rolls. (Town Clerk, Woodbury Tax Records, 1778. “Jonathan Churchill, Jr.” as searched at the Woodbury Town Clerk's Office by Bryson C. Cook.) In 1779 he was known to be a resident of Litchfield South Farms. (Pension W2560/BLWT9433-160-55. Jonathan was living in Litchfield and Oliver took his place as a substitute draftee.) His children are all named in Litchfield Town Records from 1775 to 1808. (Town Records of Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, 1701-1881, 2:132-3, Family History Library film 1516502.) After the War Jonathan bought more property in Litchfield South Farms in 1784, 1786, and 1790. The property he acquired was located west and south of Bantam Lake. (Litchfield land records, 12:476 - 477, , dated 3 July 1781(Family History Library film 4747); and 15:367 dated 1 February 1790 (Family History Library 4748). In all of these deeds he referenced as, “Jonathan Churchill of Litchfield.”) He was living in Litchfield in 1790 when the census was taken. In April of 1791 Jonathan and Sarah Churchill personally appeared in Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut to sign a deed. Sarah’s father, James Burgess, having died in 1789, left his property to his son Ezra. In that document signed and sealed by her siblings and their spouses he is referred to as, “honored father James Burgess late of said Washington, deceased.” In the deed Jonathan and Sarah are listed as of “Litchfield.” (Washington land records, 3:323, Family History Library film 6149.) CENSUS 1790 CENSUS: Litchfield town: 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16. 5 females. (Heads of Families, First Census, 1790, Connecticut. Giovernment Printing Office, WA, 1908, Family History Library book 974.6/X2b/1790. Jonathan Churchill, p. 71. 1800 CENSUS: Litchfield Town. The last is Jan 20, 1818: (22:261, Lease) Jonathan Churchill of the town and county of Litchfield in consideration of a valuable sum received to my full satisfaction of John Palmer and Jason Walker, both of the town and county aforesaid (the sum to be agreed upon by the parties to this instrument at the end of each year or in case of disagreement to be determined by disinterested freeholders,) do hereby lease demise and to farm let to the said Palmer and Walker, their heirs and assigns, for the full term of 24 years from this date the liberty to erect a trip-hammer shop, carding machine cut nailing works, Max Mill or other mill or mills on the stream running out of the Great Pond and running on the west part of my farm in said town. (Family History Library film 4751.) LITCHFIELD CHURCH RECORDS: A search of all church records in Litchfield and Morris shows Jonathan and his family were not in any of the records. His Uncle Moses Churchill was in Congregational Church records, but not Jonathan. If he lived, as PWC recorded, in South Farms, he would have been in the Litchfield Second Society Congregational church, organized 1767. But no record of him is there. (History of the Town of Litchfield, by Alain C. White, Family History Library book 974.61/L1 H2w, p. 31.) GOSHEN, LITCHFIELD, CT On 8 May 1824 Jonathan mortgaged his farm to James Birge who appeared as one of the creditors on Jonathan's son-in-law Amasa Cook's estate in 1817. From the deed we learn that Jonathan was living in Goshen. From the autobiography of his grandson we know he was living in the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Phineas and Irene (Churchill) Cook (Litchfield land records, 32:430. Deed dated 8 May 1824.) (Family History Library film 4756, item 1.) On 22 June 1825 Jonathan Churchill of Goshen signed a new lease with Jon Palmer and Jason Walker’s widow Polly Walker. (Litchfield land records, 33:97. Deed dated 22 June 1825.) For the remainder of his life he and his wife Comfort lived with the family of his daughter Irene.
