Marriage | "Connecticut Marriages, 1630-1997", database, <i>FamilySearch</i> (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F7G6-FMP : 16 March 2018), Salmon C. Hall and Eliza C. Cook, 1833, (found in Connecticut Herald, Issue: 28 May 1833, pg, 579.) This marriage recorded in Rev. A. G. Hibbard, <i>History of Goshen</i> Hartford, Connecticut, 1897, p. 415. |

Note | BIRTH In Garden City Records: "Eliza A. Cook, dau. Phineas Cook and Irene Churchill. Born 7 July 1811 at Goshen CT. Baptized May 1844 by Milo Webb and confirmed by David Savage. Received into Garden City Ward 30 April 1879.."(Garden City Ward Record of Members 1889-1894, Manuscript, Original record book Church History Library, LR 3095 7, p. 92-95.) Her birth recorded in "History of the town of Goshen, Connecticut : with genealogies and biographies based upon the records of Deacon Lewis Mills Norton," by a. G. Hibbard (Main Author) and Lewis M. Norton, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h, p. 451. Eliza is named as third child of Phineas and Irene (Churchill) Cook, but no birth date given. Proof she is the child of Phineas and Irene is given in Kalamazoo County Michigan land records. On March 27, 1866 her husband Solomon sold land to his mother-in-law (Kal. Deeds, 21:609, FHL 983,379, item 1): "confirm to the said Irene Forbes for and during her natural life and to the heirs of her body begotten by Phineas Cook, deceased by her late husband of whom the said Eliza C. Hall is one..." Mentioned in "The Life and History of Phineas Wolcott Cook," (http://cookfamily.org/journal/toc.htm), published by the PWC Family Organization, p. 9 as the sister of Phineas, but no birth date: "Three years previous to this my oldest sister Eliza was married to a man by the name of Salmon Case Hall of Milton vilage. He was a man with a liberal education. He followed school teaching winters and summers followed painting..." RICHLAND, KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN 1840 CENSUS: Richland, Kalamazoo, Michigan, p. 255: Sulman C. Hall, 1 male age 5-10, 1 male age 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-30. (Family History Library film 14795) HASTINGS, BARRY, MICHIGAN 1850 CENSUS - Hastings, Barry Co., Michigan. Salmon C. Hall (Indexed Hull), Hastings, Barry Co., Michigan p. 109. He is 40 years old, the county treasurer. Real estate worth $2,500. His wife Eliza is 39. Children are Henry age 15 and Lucy age 14, all born in Connecticut. Charles W. Hall, age 3 was born in Michigan. Living with them are two men listed as laborers: Jacob Rhodes, age 27 and John Fuller, age 55. After them is listed Solome Norton, age 17, all born in New York. The last person in the household is Reuben Spencer, age 24 who gives his occupation "gold digger." He has property valued at $240 and was born in New York. (Family History Library film 443569) WASHINGTON, D.C. 1860 CENSUS: Washington D.C. Reuben Spencer, age 34 and born in New York is a Clerk Deputy, with real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate valued at $300. His wife Lucy Spencer is age 24, born in Connecticut. Children in the household are Ella J. Spencer, a female age 3, born in Washington City; H. H. Spencer, a male age 6 months, born in Washington City. Also in the household is Eliza Hall, age 48, born in Connecticut. There are no relationships in this census, but Eliza Hall is Lucy's mother. (p. 201, Dwelling 1327, Family 1389, Lines 28-32, FamilySearch https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCV9-HP7) BAPTISM: Convert baptism into L.D.S. Church in 1843. Baptism redone 15 Nov 1968. VERNON, MISSOURI 1870 CENSUS - Center, Vernon Co., Missouri Salmon C. Hall is 60 years old, born 1810 in Connecticut. His wife Eliza is 58 years old, born in Connecticut. Also in the house is a 19-year old domestic servant. ("United States Census, 1870," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M4F7-VGN) DIVORCE Her husband unwilling to come to Utah with the L.D.S. church, Eliza stayed with him as he moved first to Barry County, then Missouri. She is with him in 1870 on the Missouri Census, but on the 1880 census he is listed as Divorced. Since Salmon C. Hall was in Fort Scott, Bourbon, Kansas in 1880 and was divorced at that time, Eliza moved to Utah by 1879 after she was in the Center, Vernon, Missouri census with Salmon and her son Henry Hall. Cemetery Records there do not show her death in Missouri. She was apparently in Utah before 1880; and died there in 1888. GARDEN CITY, UTAH Eliza was welcomed into the Garden City Ward 30 April 1879. "Eliza A. Cook, dau. Phineas Cook and Irene Churchill. Born 7 July 1811 at Goshen CT. Baptized May 1844 by Milo Webb and confirmed by David Savage. Received into Garden City Ward 30 April 1879." (Garden City Ward Record of Members 1889-1894, Manuscript, Original record book, Church History Library, LR 30957, Page 92-95.) Her brother Phineas and family was in the ward. However, soon after she came he moved to Logan with his fourth wife. Eliza and Ann Eliza, Phineas's first wife had been good friends in Michigan, and were so again in Utah, as stated in a letter by Phineas dated Logan City March 21st 1885. In that letter he hinted that he believed Ann Eliza had been affected by Eliza Hall in her bad attitude about Phineas. Mary Rosaliz Cook McCann wrote of her association with Eliza while she lived in Garden City: "We would scrub the yarn, double and twist it into what we called ten-knot skeins, each knot having forty threads and each thread waxed separately. We sold the yarn for one dollar a pound, and as my father's sister, Eliza Hall, was a fine weaver, she would weave it into cloth which was very lovely." 1880 CENSUS - Garden City, Rich Co., Utah - Lists her as Divorced and using maiden name - Eliza COOK/COOKE, age 68, born in Connecticut in 1812. Also living with her: nephew J. W. COOK/COOKE (age 25) living in her household. (I assume nephew's name was Joseph Wolcott COOK.) His mother was born in Ireland and his father in Connecticut. Also there is a male D.R. Russell, age 14 and a female M.C. Russell, age 11, both at school and both born in Utah, the younger siblings of Joseph Wolcott Cook. Their father born in Illinois and their mother in Ireland. Living next door is Alonzo Cook and on the other side Phebe and Byron Allred. ("United States Census, 1880," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11108-129014-43?cc=1417683&wc=MMB9-ZX2:n152920927 : accessed 20 Sep 2013), 004244808 > image 674 of 680.) DEATH: Gravestone: Birth: Jul. 7, 1811, Wallingford, New Haven CT. Death: Dec. 18, 1888, Garden City, Rich, UT. Originally listed as Eliza G. HALL - but probably should have been "C" for her maiden name COOK. (Garden City, Utah, cemetery inscriptions, Family History Library US/CAN Film 1035776 Item 21) Family Records found on Familysearch.org state she died 19 Dec. 1889 at Garden City, UT. However, no death record in church or public vital or cemetery records has been found in Rich County, Utah. There is no member card for her, and I couldn't find her in the Garden City Ward records. The film was very difficult to read, but if she is there I couldn't see it. (JSP 4-09) Ancestral File (AFN:1T15-32) which obviously is submitted by family of her son Henry gives the date 19 Dec. 1889, but her gravestone reads 1888.. Noted on Find-a-Grave.com: "Biography of son-in-law Reuben SPENCER lists correct year of death: December, 1888, which matches engraved date on her gravestone." She is probably the Eliza Cook in the following record, but no place mentioned: (FHL 821,647) Obituary Card Index for Utah, Only one possibility: Eliza Cook d. June 13, 1889, Obituary in Deseret Evening News 22,1889, Dated June 14, 1889. (No evidence it is her, but probably is because she used the surname Cook on the 1880 Census.) Eliza's death record is confusing. I believe the family later took this published record in 1889 and assigned it to Eliza. However, I have searched that record and can find no evidence it was a correct date, certainly not a prime record. Because it is written 1888 on the tombstone, I have taken that to be correct. The following records were searched for both Eliza Cook and Eliza Hall: 1.Church index member card for birth, Jaussi book C: 884,081 Series 2, to 884,083 Series 1604, Batch H000035 Cook, A-I H: 884,145 Series 2 to 884,148, Series 1872, Batch H000066, Haberli to Hallquist 2. (FHL 1750,669), Early Church Information File (ECIF): Neither Eliza Cook Hall nor Solomon Case Hall there 3.(FHL 821,647) Obituary Card Index for Utah, Only one possibility: Wrong Eliza Cook d. June 13, 1889, Obituary in Deseret Evening News 22,1889, Dated June 14, 1889. I went to the newspaper on film. No way to identify her, but the death was not in Garden City, Utah, so probably not her. 4.(FHL 7,170), Garden City Ward Records, Whole film is so faint I could hardly see anything. I did find an index about halfway through, but after going through it three times, could see no Eliza Cook or Eliza Hall. No member cards. 5.(FHL 982,442) Paris Idaho Stake cemeteries (burials), 1863-1970. (Includes Garden City, Laketown, Fish Haven, etc.): No Eliza Cook or Eliza Hall in any of the local cemeteries listed. I searched them all. 6. (FHL 177,955-59) Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, 1884-1970. No Eliza Cook Hall or Solomon C. Hall PROBATE:Probate of Eliza C. Hall, Dec. 13, 1892, (Probate Court of Rich County, Utah, 1888-1899, FHL 480,877, last item on roll,) p. 37. All that remains of her estate “after settling all bequests and expenses of probate, which sum belongs to the heirs at law: $4.30 to Lucy Hall Spencer $1.50 to Probate Clerk $4.30 to George H. Hall and George Whittington, guardian of Earl Hall.” (George H. Hall and Earl Hall were the two living sons of her son Henry B. Hall.) SECOND MARRIAGE IGI lists a second marriage for Eliza to Mr. Crawford. However, I find no documentation for it; and since her probate gives her name Eliza C. Hall, I believe it was a mistake. |
Note | Barbour Collection for Goshen Vital Records, 1739-1854, Connecticut State Library, p. 16. Goshen Vital Records Vol M, p. 40. (Family History Library film 2970.) "Eliza Cook married Salmon C. Hall May 12, 1833 by Rev. David G. Tomlinson of Milton." Eliza and Salmon C. Hall were on the 1870 Census at Center, Vernon, Missouri. He is 60 and she is 58. On the 1880 Census he is living alone ten miles west across the state line in Fort Scott, Bourbon, Kansas. He is 70 years old and divorced. Since divorce records in Missouri are only published before 1850, the actual divorce record has not been located. |
