(Cook ressearch commissioned by Leora Cook Barus and Josinette Cook Whiting , 044,331 p.95 Nr.50.) NAME Birth and name spelling taken from Aunt Leora's Swedish genealogist. Also known as Johanna Ulrika . København is Copenhagen. BIRTH Barbara Whiting wrote in 1988: " When Johanna entered the Endowment House in 1880 to be sealed to Phineas Wolcott Cook, she gave her birthdate as 13 Mar 1807, and this date was perpetuated on the family records. However, all the clerical survey records in Sweden record her birthdate as 3 May 1807. Her original birth record in Copenhagen has not yet been found." BIRTH Birth record listed under sources. Both 13 Mar and 3 May are given as dates in records. The birth record has been found and 13 March seems to be correct Though perhaps an inexperienced reader could have read it as 3 May. This is a birth record! The researcher's translation: "VorFrue Sogn. København, København, Denmark Births p 9 nr.50 Ole Lundgren worker in Lofendelstride Nr. 87 Birthe Christina Ibsen Born 13 Mar Chr 3rd Sonday n Mar= 15 Mar 1807 Johana Ulrica (Looked from 1807- 1812 in this parish, no more births for this family.) " [I have a photo copy of this birth record] . The format of this place is a little different than the ones in Sweden. Vor Frue is the parish (sogn=parish), København is the city (Copenhaugen), København is the county, and Denmark is the country. CHRISTENING Carl Cook's record lists the christening as 3 May 1807. This comes from the Swedish researcher Ella Heckscher. ORDINANCES Her baptism is given as Nov 1879. On one record this is crossed out and 48 is written in. P. W. Cook recorded her sealing to him July 8th, 1880 and her baptism in October 1879. BIOGRAPHY Phineas W. Cook Family Record, handwritten by P.W. Cook, Church History Library MS 6974, p. 2: "Ulrick Johanna Lundgreen arrived at Swan Creek, Rich Col. Utah Sept. 9th 1879. Baptized October. She was (sealed) to P. W. Cook July 8th, 1880." From Barbara Whiting's notes: "Sometime between 1809 and 1812, Johanna Ulrika went to live with her paternal grandparents, Tyke Lundgren and Anna Andersdotter, in Tullesbo village, Skartofta parish, Malmohus county, Sweden. She lived there until 1825 when she moved with her widowed grandmother to the poorhouse in Oved parish, Malmohus county. When her grandmother died in 1828, Johanna left Oved and went to work in Caroli parish, Malmo city. She went to live in the household of her mother's borother, Niclas Malmqvist. In 1829, she went to Karlskrona city, Blekinge county. Her father, Olaus Lundgren was supposed to be living there at that time but it has not been possible to verify that yet. In any case, she was back in Caroli by 1832 for in that year she moved from Caroli to St. Petri, Malmo where she then lived with her aunt Kristina Nilsdotter, the widow of Olaus Malmqvist, her mother's brother. She returned to live with her uncle, Niclas Malmqvist, in Caroli parish in 1838 and was there for six years. Then in 1844 she moved again to St. Petri and married Pal Jonsson there in 1845 (see notes for Pal Jonsson). When Pal Jonsson left for Denmark, she remained behind with her daughter. I have not yet traced her past this point. The family group sheets say she was born 13 Mar 1807, but all the records I saw gave 3 May 1807 as the birthdate. Her birth record in Copenhagenhas not been found so that the discrepancy an be cleared up, but since all the temple work has been done, it is not too important to spend time to find it at this point. (Research by Steve Parkes, January 1988)" BIOGRAPHY The following is a copy of notes made on the back of Barbara Whiting's family group sheet: Johanna Ulrika Lundgren: 1807 born in Holmen's Copenhagen 1812-28 living in Oved Skartofta, Malmohus with paternal grandparents. 1828 moved to Caroli, Malmohus from Skartofta . at #35 O.F. 35 O.W. 1828 Oct film 146254 1829 move to Carlskrona, Blekinge 35 O.W. Cook Family Record, handwritten by P.W. Cook, Church History Library MS 6974, p. 3: "Ulrica Johanna Lungreen Cook died of constipation of the bowel at Logan City, Cache Co., Utah the 9th of Nov. 1883 after one week illness." RESEARCH The following is taken from a letter written by Eva Cover Madsen, daughter of Idalia Cook Madsen, to Josinette Whiting, daughter of Carl Cook. I understand that Johanna Christina Palsson spent the last years of her life in the home of her daughter Idalia. This gave her oportunity to spend much time with her granddaughter Eva. The letter is dated 15 Nov 1985. Additional information from this letter, about the three girls is given in the notes for Tekla. "Now to get to little Mary. Grandmother told me that her mother, Johanna Ulrika Lundgren belonged to a family of some wealth. Her father (or grandfather) had been honored by the Swedish King and had been given the name Lundgren to be used from generation thru generation rather than the usual way names in those days changed from generation to generation according to the husband's first name. They owned land, and had some servants and a coachman. In fact it was the coachman, Pol Johnson who became our grandmother's father. Grandma said that her mother Ulrika and Ulrika's sister Mary were driven, by the coachman to read for the Priest. This was the way the girls got their education. They apparently learned to read by reading for the Priest from the Bible. I had the picture in my mind of a young girl being swept off her feet by this handsome coachman and when I received the genealogy Uncle Carl sent me, I couldn't believe it when I saw that Ulrika was so much older than the coachman! Anyway, when Ulrika became pregnant by the coachman her family disinherited her and fired the coachman and she found herself in dire straits financially. Grandma said he was a drinker also and she had a very rough time., She remembered as a small child that her mother would leave very early in the morning to go to a factory job (I mean grandmother remembers). When grandma was still quite small Ulrika had another little girl who she named Mary after her sister. I'm not sure how much younger she was but my guess is probably a year or two and I believe she was born in Malmo. Grandmother also talked about Ulrika's brother, and I don't recall that she called him by name, but she said he came by the place they lived (Ulrika got sick and this brother came and got her and threatened Pol Johnson if he ever touched her again, took her home to her parents home. The brother asked grandma if she wanted to go too and she did. I think that she never again lived with Pol. She didn't continue the story any further, but this was enough to realize that Ulrika had not only a sister named Mary, but also a brother. I have never seen a family group sheet with any one except Ulrika as an only child also grandmother as an only child. I doubt very much that she would have talked about them if they didn't exist, but I don't know enough detail about them to be much help in finding them. I know that it is common for people from Malmo to go to Copenhagen Denmark and there is a slight chance that Ulrika and Pol could have gone there and that Mary could have been born there, but I can't be sure." Research: No brother for Ulrika has been found. Does the family tradition refer to an uncle? Is there a brother? If she went home to live with her parents was she really disowned? Research: Where did the name Lundgren come from. Was it given to Johanna's father? To her grandfather? Or was it just adopted? DEATH "Great-grandmother Ulrika Lundgren passed away on November 9, 1883 and was buried in the Logan City Cemetery." (APPENDAGE #3, "The Logan Period, 1883 to 1889," by Eva Covey Madsen, The Life and History of Phineas Wolcott Cook,) found at http://www.cookfamily.org/journal/toc.htm, p.
