Note

NAME: Paehl, Phal, Pal. Sirname Joensson, Jonson, Jonsson. On the record that I believe was done in Sweden it is listed as Pål.

RESEARCH: There is a note on Gordon Whiting's family group record that says 145,528 and 524/525. I think this may be a film number and a page number but I have not checked it.[Film #145,528=Hyby Född 1815-1859, 1813-1859, döde 1793-1859; Film 145,524=Hyby Husförslängd 1778-1786, 1804-1823; Film 145,525=Hyby Husförskängd 1823-1856.]

RESEARCH: The pedigree chart I received from Leora Barus lists two film numbers beside his name. I have not yet checked to learn what these films are or why the numbers are listed here. They are 145,528 and 1,234,692.[Film #145,528=Hyby Född 1815-1859, 1813-1859, döde 1793-1859; Film 1,234,692=Endowment index 1846-1969 Temple Record Index Bureau.]

RESEARCH: There is a note on Whiting's sheet that says Caroli. I do not know whether this is a suspected death place or whether it has something to do with his mother.

BIRTH: Barbara Whiting's notes in 1988 state: "At this point, I have not checked for his birth. There is conflicting information as to the date and place. Some records show 19 July 1820 and others give 2 July 1820. This birthplace is given as both Hyby and Asum parishes in Malmohus county. Further work needs to be done to verify which (if any) are correct. (researcher Steve Parkes) [I cannot find Asum, Åsum, or Äsum in my list of Swedish parishes. There is a S.Åsum (Södra or South Åsum) in Malmöhus and a Nora (North) Åsum in Kristianstad. MLG ]

BIRTH: Family records say he was born in Vittenbergshus (or Wittenberg). I can find no such place, either farm or village, in any of the sources of places in Sweden. Hus means "house". If he was born there is it a building? On the report from Sweden Wittenberghus is listed under the column for gård or farm. In the city a gård could be an address.

BIOGRAPHY: I Copy from notes by Barbara Whiting 1988. At this point, I have not checked for his birth. There is conflicting information as to the date and place. Some records show 19 July 1820 and others give 2 July 1820. His birthplace is given as both Hyby and Asum parishes in Malmohus county. [My list of parishes in Sweden does not include an Asum, an Åsum, or an Äsum. However there is an Asarum Parish in Blekinge county. There is a Södra Åsum in Malmöhus. MLG] Further work needs to be done to verify which (if any) are correct. By 1845, when he married Johanna Ulrika Lundgren, Pål Jonsson was living in Malmö city. In 1846, his family moves to Caroli parish in Malmö city. Nothing of note is recorded until 1852, when Pål is convicted and punished for committing adultry. No details are given as to the woman involved. There might be a record in the court books but they are not indexed and would be time consuming to seearch. Perhaps that might be done in the future if desired. On 25 July 1855, he recieves permission to travel to Denmark, but does not actually go until 1859. His wife declared her wish to separate and he went alone. I believe that he returned to Malmö and died there in 1870 or 1880, but that has not been proven yet. (Research by Steve Parkes, Jan 1988)

DEATH: There is a note on Whiting's sheet that says Caroli. I do not know if this is suspected to be the death place of Pal Jonson or if it has something to do with his mother.
