Note | BIRTH Phineas W. Cook Family Record, handwritten by P.W. Cook, Church History Library MS 6974, p. 1: Willia, or Willia(m) Cook was born at the Lone Tree (Ranch) May 19th 1862." (Goshen, Utah, Utah) William Cook was the 14th child of Phineas W. Cook and Ann Eliza Howland. His father's handwritten record shows William in the lower right-hand corner, and appears to be "Willa" or "Willie." Since Will was his nickname as an adult, perhaps Willie was his nickname as a youth. In any case, there was no middle name, and Phineas was careful to write a middle name in every single instance in which it occurred. (Church History Library MS 6974, p. 3) William Cook born May 19, 1862 at Goshen, Utah. (Garden City Ward records, Family History Library film 7,170. See also Cemetery Record.) Found in Garden City Ward Records: "Wm Cook b. 19 May 1862 at Goshen. Blessed 1862 by Orson Pratt. Baptized (no date) by P. W. Cook. Ordained an Elder 1880 by R. Calder." (No death date) (Garden City Ward Record of Members 1889-1894, Manuscript, Original record book Church History Library, LR 3095 7, p. 32.) NAME His brother Joseph called him Will in his Autobiography. (The Autobiography of Joseph Wolcott Cook, p. 26-27. There he calls his brother “Will.”) His brother Joseph was sometimes called "Wilcut" (Wolcott?) In a series of comments made by William Cook, he may have been, at least in the record, also called Wilcot. (See p. 38-40, Jan 21, 1891, High Priests Group Minute Book, 1887-1892, 1902-1908, Bear Lake Stake, Church History Library LR 583 32. Now we know he was not named William Wolcott. In the handwritten record of his father his name is recorded simply William Cook. (Phineas W. Cook Family Record, handwritten by P.W. Cook, Church History Library MS 6974) BAPTISM: Family History Library film 178,135. Date in this record is 18 May 1876. Family records show 13 Sept. 1885., rebaptism 18 May 1876. ENDOWMENT: Family History Library film 178,052, Logan SEALING TO WIFE: Family History Library film 178,053 1880 CENSUS: Garden City, Utah. Phineas W. Cook and Wife Ann A. Cook. William, age 18, a farm laborer lives with them. BORDER, WYOMING Before moving to Woodruff, William and his brother Joseph Wolcott went into business together in Border, Wyoming, just across the border from the northern tip of Bear Lake not far from Garden City, where most of their family lived. Several brothers from Garden City joined with them in proposing a ditch, submitting an affidavit to Uinta County, Wyoming, first on 28 July 1883 for “a dam to be hereafter constructed across said Bear River” in order to provide water for irrigation; and second on 23 September 1886 for a permit to dig a ditch twenty feet wide and four miles long, flowing westerly from the Bear River. (Uinta County, Wyoming, Mixed Records, Family History Library 973,813, affidavit 29791, Book 28, pp. 67-68 and Family History Library 973,814, item 2, pp. 2, 442-444.) Alonzo, David S. and Henry H. Cook of Garden City also signed the affidavit. WOODRUFF: Grantee indexes are sporatic in Rich Co., but Bertha McKinnon said "Before building that home (in Garden City in about 1894), William Cook, had lived and worked a farm on the north side of the road to Monte Cristo." William sold land March 27, 1900 to Annie Lutz (Rich Co. Land Records F-437) no place stated in index. William paid off a mortgage to J.H. Austin Oct 6 1909 (Rich Co. Land Records I-143) No place in index, but the original mortgage is Book I:142.) GARDEN CITY: (Garden City Ward, Paris Idaho Stake, General Minutes beginning 1879, Church History Library, LR 3095 11.) Roll 2, p. 83 dated May 18, 1883, “The minutes of teachers meetings were left in a note book in pencil. Was recorded from Aug. 31 1882 until Mar 26, 1889 during the time B. H. Allred was clerk. I am now recording the minutes between said dates.” Signed William Cook, Ward Clerk His mother referred to his efforts to copy the notes for the meetings in her journal on Mon Oct 1 1894: "Towards night Will went and cut down some Lucern. I had been reading minutes of teachers Meeting for 1887 for him to copy as he has the ward record to keep and it is away behind it will be a great job for him to catch up." p. 87, Oct. 4, 1885 & Dec. 28, 1885, Oct 31, 1886, Sept. 2, 1888, Jan. 20, 1890 Some of the Minutes from 1885 to 1888 written and signed by Wm. The last minutes signed by Wm. Cook are at the end of the film: May 26, 1895. That meeting “was adjourned for 2 weeks,” but no more minutes. D:41) A speaker at ward conferences held at Meadowville and Laketown, 26 Mar 1893. Called Wm. Cooke, Esq. August 4, 1894, (Des. News 49:238) when Charlotte was born. Feb. 16, 1890 "Elder Wm. Cook expressed his satisfaction in meeting with the brethren and in the exercises so far(.) expressed his pleasure with the circumstances and the opportunities we have of doing good." (High Priests Group Minute Book, 1887-1892, 1902-1908, Bear Lake Stake, Church History Library LR 583 32.) p. 38-40, Jan 21, 1891, High Priest Minutes, Garden City: “Wilcot Cook” said he felt well in meeting with the brethren and hear them bear testimony and give their experience and if we make our actions correspond with the truth as we understand it we are blessed. Referred to some of the prophecies concerning the times we live in. Made some interesting remarks in regard to the genius of the High Priesthood, also in regards with making covenants one with another. (Could be his brother Joseph, who was almost always called "Wilcot." p. 41-42, Sept 30, 1891 in High Priest Minutes, Garden City, Bro. Wm Cook said he felt good in meeting with the brethren. Felt he had an interest with the Latter-day Saints in any and every capacity. Stated his experience in regard to obeying and disobeying counsel spoken in regard to the course taken by the Latter-day Saints in regard to right and wrong and its effects upon themselves(.) Expressed his regard for the truth. Benediction by Wm. Cook. 1880 CENSUS: In Garden City with parents P. W. and Ann E. Cook. HISTORY: Bertha McKinnon said: "Something happened to Grandpa Cook and Grandma left. He had a sawmill and fell off on his head. Bill Eastman says it made him sick. Eventually he had to go to Provo and they closed up the house." (Interview with Bertha McKinnon Jan. 15, 1999) As early as summer of 1895 Joseph W. Cook in his journal said "William has lost it." He told how William took grain to his father's family in Afton, Wyoming, but didn't put the grain in sacks. By the time he had rumbled all the way to Afton there was almost nothing left in the wagon. Salt Lake Tribune: "Messengers in pursuit of William Cook, an insane man, who yesterday mounted a horse and fled from Bountiful, reached police headquarters early last night, and leaving a description, requested that any information concerning him be sent to the Co-op at Bountiful. Cook is a man of about 34 years, of light complexion, and on leaving his home was mounted on a gray horse without saddle." (Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday 2 Nov. 1895, p. 8) Exactly one month later, on Dec. 2, 1895 William was committed at age 33 into the Utah State Mental Hospital in Provo by his wife and his brother Alonzo. He was discharged on March 31, 1898, but didn't live with his wife and children right away. On the 1900 Census Sarah Cook in Woodruff listed herself as divorced and alone with the children. Eventually Sarah returned to Garden City and lived with William in their house. Eventually he returned to Garden City and is found in Ward Records: Vol. 3, Priesthood Minute Book, William Cook is listed as a Seventy, 1914-1916. (Church History Library (LR 3095-11) Also in Vol 4 (1917-1921), Vol. 5 (1922-1926) and Vol. 6 (1926-1929) He does not appear from 1898 to 1913, but those are the years his family lived in Woodruff and he was living alone after being released from the hospital. It is possible she moved back to Garden City when he seemed better and began supporting the family again. However, it didn't last and he died in the hospital. He was noted by Bertha McKinnon to have been at home and apparently healthy in Dec. of 1922 and early in 1922 when her sister Norma was born and the family went to Garden City to live for a while with their grandparents. (Interview by Janet Porter with Bertha McKinnon Jan. 15, 1999) He lived in Garden City for 28 years before he became sick again. William voluntarily re-admitted himself March 27, 1926 at age 64. His son Newell Cook was present when he admitted himself and said his father "had nervous upsets at times. He had ideas of persecution and thought people were stealing his property and trying to poison him. His main idea is that his wife is untrue to him...has also threatened if he didn't get better...he would commit suicide." (Utah State Mental Hospital number V-163, #582, in possession of Janet Porter) William was unable to leave the hospital permanently until his death 31 October 1933. Much of this time his wife was left to manage alone, to support and raise the children. She worked at Henry Cook's store and became a midwife, but it was never easy for either one of them. 1920 CENSUS: Rich County, Utah, he is 57 years old, born 1863 in Utah. His wife Sarah B.
