She suffered in her feelings seriously from grandfather’s taking a fourth wife and asking her to divorce in order to marry legally. She was very quiet and patient. Was a well educated deep character Spoke good English and taught her children correct forms and cultural ways. My Father, (Alonzo Cook) always corrected us children in our English. She had taught him so carefully. Humility was such a firm rooted characteristic with her that she breathed it into all her children. FAMILY: Record for this family is found in Cook records MARRIAGE: Ann Eliza was married at the same time as her twin sister Ann Maria. END OF LIFE "Ann Eliza's diary makes frequent reference to Johanna. Alonzo L. Cook records that Ann Eliza was very deeply hurt when the U.S. Government enforced the law and required her husband to live only with one family. He chose his youngest family whom he moved to Afton, Wyoming. Eliza did not record one word of sorrow, complaint, or criticism in her diary. She also tells of their visits to her from Wyoming and indicates a high regard for Johanna. Ann Eliza kept this interesting diary until April 30, 1896 just a few days before her death on May 17, 1896. Annie, Hyrum's wife, wrote a postscript in her diary. It reads, "Grandma Cook suffered very much from the day she left off writing and for that reason she did not keep up this record until the last. Her children were not all here as Hyrum was in New Zealand on a mission and Phebe in Mexico. The rest of her children were here and a large number of her relatives and friends. She was buried by the side of our dear babes for which I was very thankful. This ends the month of May and with it the life of a noble mother and friend to all both young and old, rich and poor. She was always loving, kind and patient, and in her last days was as cheerful as it was possible for one to be. She died as she had lived,in full hope of a glorious resurrection and worthy of a noble crown." ("The Autobiography of Melvin Cook," Volume 1, reprinted in The Life and History of Phineas Wolcott Cook,) found at http://www.cookfamily.org/journal/toc.htm, printed journal p. B 1-2.) DEATH: "Paris Idaho Stake Cemeteries (burials)," FHL 982,442, item 2: Garden City Cemetery. "Ann Eliza Cook, b. 18 July 1823 Saratoga Springs, died 18 May 1896." Alonzo Howland Cook wrote "She said, a few days before her death, that through all her suffering, hardships and sacrifices for the Gospel, she had never wanted to go back. She was kind, well educated, and spoke perfect English. She was a good nurse and endured patiently. She died 18 May 1896 in Garden City."
