| Note | NAME Evidently Hilma went by the name of Cook instead of Jonson or Jenson after her mother married Phineas Wolcott Cook. SWEDISH RECORDS Letter written by Gordon Whiting, not dated, but probably written in the 1980s. It is entitled: SWEDISH RECORDS LOCATED FOR ANNA CHRISTINA PALSSON'S DAUGHTERS. Part of it pertains to these three girls: "The Swedish birth records for Tekla Cornelia, Hilma Josefina, and Alma Elvira have been located. They were the first three daughters of Anna Christina Palsson,... wife of Phineas Wolcott Cook who married him September 13, 1878. All three of the girls were born well before this in Caroli Parish, Malmo Sweden. The birthdates for the three girls are: Tekla Cornelia, 2 March 1870 Hilma Josefina, 15 April 1871 Alma Elvira, 25 Nov 1872 "Johanna Christina's occupation is given as "Maid." No information about the father of the children is supplied in these records. "The spelling of the girl's names given above is the spelling given in the parish register and on her parish Clerical Census. Alma Elvira's name later came to be written by some as Alice Alvira; but her mother and the Swedish authorities always wrote it as indicated. "Johanna Christian's surname is given in these records not as "Palsson" but as"Palsdotter." The Swedes in Malmo in the 1870s still held to the practice of altering surnames with each generation by using the father's first name to create the surname for the child and completing that surname with either "son" or " dotter." "I have copies of the registers showing the births of these three girls. All of them list Johanna Christina as unmarried. We do not like to think that these children were born without the benefit of marriage, but in Scandinavia that is quite common and has been for many years. It was probably accepted by that culture." End of quote. We have found it was common for a married woman to use he maiden surname throughout her life. RESEARCH: On her work sheet Barbara Whiting wrote: "No archives. IGI Wyoming, Idaho, Utah No marriage found for Hilma. No archives Main or Patrons for Shurtliff." Weiser, Idaho "A year or two after the family moved to Star Valley, Hilma met and married a man by the name of Thomas Spencer and they moved to Weiser, Idaho. A-30. JOHANNA'S DAUGHTERS : The following is taken from a letter written by Eva Covey Madsen, daughter of Idalia Cook Madsen, to Josinette Whiting, daughter of Carl Cook. "I understand that Johanna Christina Palsson spent the last years of her life in the home of her daughter Idalia. This gave her opportunity to spend much time with her granddaughter Eva." The letter is dated 15 Nov 1985. "Now I'll try to remember all I can about grandmother's daughters. Teckla, I'm quite sure was the eldest and she died in Sweden before grandmother came to this country. The man who grandmother married in Sweden and who was the father of all three girls was Jim Jensen, a blacksmith who made a good living but drank too much. He and grandmother joined the church at the same time in Sweden. (May 1871). He said he thought that if he came to America, to Zion, he would be able to break his drinking habit living around the Saints. He sold most of what he had to pay his fare on the ship and then said he would work and send money for grandma and her family to come later on. What happened was that he never went as far as Zion. He stayed in the east of the country and plain deserted her. I believe he stayed in Chicago, Ill. (The last letter was from Chicago). "I'm sure you know the story about Phineas sending money for her to come to the U.S.A. But as far as I know, she never heard from Jim Jensen again. "Hilma and Alie are listed in the Sailing Records in the Church Historian's Office as follows: Poulson, Johanne C age (33); Poulson, Hilma J. (4 1/2); Poulson, Alma C (3 1/2) FROM SKANE CONFERENCE "1878: June 29--Sailed from Liverpool, England on the ship 'NEVADA' and arrived at New York City on July 10th. The Company continued their journey by rail in charge of Capt. John Cook, and arrived at Salt Lake City July 18th. "The age of Hilma and Alie (I never heard her called Alma.) I have heard her called Alvira or Elvira by Uncle Mose. At any rate Teckla would likely be a year or so older than Hilma. Malmo, Sweden is the only place I remember grandmother saying she lived. Although she said once that her father wanted her to come over to Copenhagen, Denmark to work where he was working. It is my understanding that when she was married to Jim Jensen she lived in Malmo. "I am quite sure that Hilma's Temple work is done. Mother has told me that grandmother brought her with her to Logan when she was about three or four years old and that grandma did Hilma's Temple work and had mother stand proxy for the baby that died when Aunt Hilma was shot. Uncle Mose says in the history he wrote for me that the natural father of Uncle Del (Hilma's son) was named Harry Kinport. He never married her though and later Aunt Hilma married...Thomas Spencer, Weiser, Idaho. Mother was always upset because grandma had Hilma sealed to a man named Pete Lee. Josinette, you may remember him. I do just barely. Mom said Hilma couldn't stand him. Knowing how much grandmother loved Hilma I can't imagine why she would have done if she knew Hilma didn't like him! Tis a puzzlement! They lived & I think she died in Weiser, Idaho. "I doubt that Aunt Alie's work has been done because she lived until grandmother was older and I don't remember her doing Temple work when she stayed with us in Salt Lake. She used to go to meeting lots of times in the Tabernacle and took me with her several times, but I don't have any recollection of her talking about doing temple work at that point in her life, although she did a lot in the Logan Temple early on. In fact when Maud was working so much in the Logan Temple I asked her to see if she could find any record of grandmother's family work being done in their records. She couldn't, although she found many that she and grandfather had done on his family. Sounds a little one sided?" "Aunt Alie and Uncle George Shurtleff, although they were married when Alie was very young, had a wonderful marriage, a big family (4 boys and 1 girl) and Uncle George was so good to her. He was a fine man. I have a marriage date of July 1888. If this is accurate she was only 14 yrs. old. That sounds younger than I thought., I thought she was about 16. I sent family group sheets with mother one summer a long time ago and I have some information on this family if you need it. Although it is very sketchy as far as Uncle George and Aunt Alie are concerned. Her name on the family group sheet they filled out is Alice Almira Poulson Jensen Shurtleff. Alie, was the way mother and grandmother spoke of her. As long as I can remember they lived on a ranch close to Payette, Idaho. "I have been reading from your father's record. On page 19, 4th paragraph from the top he says Hilma's husband was Dr. William Spencer. I'm not sure which first name is correct. Uncle Mose put it one way and Uncle Carl another--take your pick. That paragraph gives a good account of the accident that killed Aunt Hilma. He has death dates and places for both Alie and Hilma, but I do believe Aunt Alie died in Payette and not Weiser. "I just remembered that Pete did Adelbert LeRoy Cook's endowment 25 May 1977." DEATH "In about 1892 Hilma gave birth prematurely to a little girl who died at birth. Hilma was lying in bed recovering from her confinement, with Adelbert sitting on a chair beside her bed and she was cutting out paper dolls to amuse him. He was about three and a half years old. Her husband was in the closet showing a neighbor his rifle which he was planning to loan him to kill a beef. The gun accidentally went off, went through the wall of the bedroom, through young Del's shoulder and through Aunt Hilma's abdomen. "As soon as they could, they sent word to grandmother to come, but it was in the middle of winter and traveling was slow, and though grandmother started immediately when she received word, Aunt Hilma died before she could get to Weiser, Idaho. Grandma and Aunt Hilma were very close and grandma was distraught with grief. Adelbert recovered and grandmother brought him back with her to Afton and he was raised along with the other children as her own.
