PIMA ARIZONA "Just when we had started to become very comfortable at Bear Lake, Idaho, one of the greatest trials of my life occurred. Apostle Erastus Snow called us to help settle a colony in Arizona. At first I wanted to refuse, but my husband and I both knew we must answer the Lord's call. My husband was head of the company and chose where we settled. The settlement was called Pima, Arizona. We had a small store and I was postmistress. The weather was hot and dry. There was much sickness and many deaths caused from 'chills and fever.' My children were very ill but through the blessings of the Lord theyu survived and I was not smitten. After we had been in Pima nearly 4 years, my husband was taken dreadfully ill and died at the age of 49 years. "His death was a heavy blow. I was left alone with 5 young children, the oldest a boy 13, so I decided to go back to my parents and friends in Utah. We had no money for the train, but sold our cow for $40, packed our wagon and started out on a 1,000 mile journey, trusting in the Lord. Many miraculous events happened, one of which was corssing the big Colorado River. The waters of the river were so high and angry that NO ONE was crossing but we were running low on food and had to keep going. I went a little way from our wagon, knelt and pleaded with the Lord to open the way. Soon the ferry man said, "Do you notice how calm this river has become, Mrs. Teeples? I have lived here 20 years and I have never seen this happen before. I can't account for it." I knew why it was. And the ferryman soon helped us to cross. "Back home in Utah we were lovingly welcomed. I again became a postmistress and was able to raise my children in good circumstances. I exhort my dear children and all my dear friends to hold fast to the Gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that we may all be together once again."
