Note	BIRTH: Born March 16, 1850, (Find A Grave) Her marriage record to Daniel Cook gives birth date and place as Hastings. The 1860 Census gives her birthplace Michigan. The 1870 Census has several mistakes, among which is the fact that her birthplace is New York, the same as both parents, which is also a mistake. 1850 CENSUS: Hastings, Barry, Michigan living in the home of Joshua and Elizabeth Boorhum, Elizabeth J. a. ½, b. Michigan. Although the 1870 Census lists "Louisa" as the daughter of Daniel Cook, and his probate record lists her as "adopted daughter Louisa Jane Burrows," Lovica's father was still alive in the immediate area, and a search of Michigan records does not show she was adopted. Both times she was listed as his daughter, she was his wife, but 42 years younger. Apparently no one believed it. 1900 Census: The wife of Benona A. Cotant is Louiza J. Cotant. She is a white female, born Mar 1850. 1930 Census: Hastings, Barry, Michigan. Lovica J. Cotant is age 80. She was born in Michigan and parents born in New York.. She is widowed and owns her home, valued at $1,500. She lives next door to her daughter Hattie and husband Elmer E. Cotant. GS Film number: 2340709, Digital Folder Number: 004607710, Image Number: 00216) NAME Her name was recorded in the 1870 Census Lorice. In other census records she was written Louisa. Both marriage records say Lovica. Kalamazoo County Deeds 38:211, (FHL 983,387, item 2) (Noted in index to be 65 ½ acres total in Richland) Daniel Cook and wife Lovica J. Cook to Lucy Spenser: This indenture made 5 Oct 1872 between Daniel Cook and his wife Lovica J. of the township of Hastings, County of Barry, State of Michigan to Lucy Spencer of the township of Richland, in which the property of his parents was sold to his niece Lucy Spencer. (Family History Library film 983,387, item 2, p. 211, 5 and 6 October 1870, both transactions with his wife named "Lovica J. Cook." HASTINGS, BARRY, MICHIGAN 1870 CENSUS: Hastings, Barry Co., Michigan: Daniel, age 62, gave his occupation "owns saw mill." He gave his birthplace Connecticut, his real estate value $7.000 and his personal estate at $1.000. His daughter (actually his wife who was 40 years younger) Louisa is 20, keeps house, and was born in Michigan. (p. 28) Note: No doubt the census taker didn't believe Lovica was Daniel's wife, so he wrote her down as daughter. Since there is a marriage record for 1868, we know they were married by this census. 1880 CENSUS: Hastings, Barry, Michigan. Benoni Cotant, a farmer, 50 years old, and born in New York is married to Lovisa J. Cotant, 30, born in Michigan. She gives her parents' birthplace New York. There is a child in the house, Hattie Cook, step daughter to Benoni. She is eight years old, born in Michigan. Lippincoff & Co., Philadelphia) MARRIAGE (1) Lovica Jane Booram married her step-father Daniel Cook. 17 April 1868. He was age 59 in 1868 at the marriage. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION Michigan Secretary of State, Michigan Marriage Records, 1868-1925 (Lansing, Michigan : State Records and Publications Center, 1969), FHL Film [2342448]. "Groom; Daniel Cook, a; 59 years, Birth Date; 1809, Birth Place; Goshen, Connecticut." (Lovica is also listed as his daughter) On the 1870 Census she is called his daughter, although we have a marriage record to prove they were married in 1868. In his will, dated 21 December, 1867, Lovica J. Booram is named as his adopted daughter, and he left all his estate to her. By then his other children had died. They married the following April after the will was signed. She obviously cared for him to the end of his life, as recorded in the probate, and they had a child together. It is possible the two instances in which she was recorded as the daughter were simply mistakes. Because Lovica was 42 years younger than Daniel, it may have been someone's opinion she was his daughter. Yvonne Peterson note: Why she was mentioned as "an adopted daughter" I do not know. I Looked at the guardianship records to see if they are mentioned, but I did not find her. Her dad was right there in Barry County and did not die until 1899. This is a little odd. Daniel's WILL Last Will and Testament of Daniel Cook of Hasting, Barry, Michigan, Family History Library film 1718812 item 3. Daniel is 59 years old. Appoints his "adopted daughter" Lovica Jane Booram as executrix and bequeaths to her all his goods and estate with the stipulation that she care for him to the end of his life. On this last will, written on December 21, 1867 he does indeed mention "Lovica Jane Booram" as his adopted daughter. He lists his age as "59 on birthday last," which he identifies as "November 20 last." It should be noted he married Lovica Jane the next April. Daniel's PROBATE His Probate hearing was dated 26 March 1877 at which Louisa Jane Cook was listed as principal in the disposition of the property of Daniel Cook, deceased. LAND RECORD PROVING RELATIONSHIP: Kalamazoo County, Michigan Deeds 38:211, (Family History Library film 983387, item 2, p. 211-212, dated 1870-1874.) A portion of the family property in the will of Irene Cook Forbes, was deeded to Daniel. Lucy Spencer, his niece bought the farm and paid each of her mother (Eliza Hall's) siblings for their part in the property. "On this sixth day of October, 1870, before me, Justice of the Peace for said county, personally came the above-named Daniel Cook and Lovica J. Cook, wife of the Grantor, known to me to be the person who executed the foregoing instrument and acknowledged the same to be their free act and deed. And the said Lovica J. Cook, being (interviewed) separate and apart from her husband, acknowledged that she executed the same without any fear or compulsion from him, her said husband." Kalamazoo County Deeds 38:211, (FHL 983,387, item 2) (Noted in index to be 65 ½ acres total in Richland) Daniel Cook and wife to Lucy Spenser: This indenture made 5 Oct 1872 between Daniel Cook and Louisa J. Cook his wife of the township of Hastings, County of Berry, State of Michigan to Lucy Spencer of the township of Richland. Lovica is named in both the will and probate of Daniel Cook. Strangely, she is named as his adopted daughter, although they were married in 1868. Apparently no one believed she would be married to such an old man, although she obviously was married to and cared for him to the end of his life and they had a child together.
