Note | BIRTH "JONATHAN CHURCHILL (Joseph2 Josiah1) Born in 1692. Twin brother of David. Married Mrs. Sarah Deming." First child: Jonathan b. 1724; married Lydia Smith. (Source: The Churchill Family in America, Compiled by Gardner Asaph Churchill and Nathaniel Wiley Churchill, Edited by George M. Madison, Published by the family of George A. Churchill, 1904, https://archive.org/details/churchillfamilyi01church, Family History Library book 929.273/C475c, p. 331.) Jonathan was a twin to Dorcas Churchill. WOODBURY, LITCHFIELD, CT Jonathan and his brother William came to Woodbury before 1750. William bought land in 1748 and was called "William Churchill of Woodbury" on that record. Jonathan's first land record was in 1750. (Woodbury land records, 8:212, Family History Library film 6152, item 1). Deed dated 26 April 1750, Jonathan Churchill of Woodbury bought twenty seven acres from John Watson of Woodbury.) This was the first acquisition of several for the family farm. It was located in the third tier and twelfth lot of the North Purchase the part of Woodbury that would become the Bethlehem Society, and was about fifty-four acres just south of his brother William’s property. His farm was situated between the present Paddy Hollow Rd. on the North, Arch Bridge Rd. on the South, Carmel Hill Road on the West and Judge Road on the East. Land Records. 1755: Bought Josiah Whittlesey's farm (his wife's first cousin 1R) for 400 pounds (Woodbury Land Records 12:104, Family History Library film 6154, item 1). The farm was located in the third tier and twelfth lot of the North Purchase, the part of Woodbury that would become the Bethlehem Society, and was about fifty-four acres just south of his brother’s property. His farm was situated between the present Paddy Hollow Rd. on the North, Arch Bridge Rd. on the South, Carmel Hill Road on the West and Judge Road on the East. (Bryson C. Cook,"Jonathan Churchill of Litchfield and Goshen, CT," 2011, p. 2) Bought and sold land in Woodbury 1760 -(14:42, FHL film 6155, item 1) 1793 –(28:87, 28:95, FHL film 6162, item 1) 1794 -(29:210 (FHL film 6162, item 2) 1799 -30:50 (FHL film 6163, item 1) BETHLEHEM, LITCHFIELD, CT Jonathan and his son Oliver are recorded in adjacent properties in Bethlehem land records Dec 29, 1791: "At a meeting...to make alteration in school districts in the town of Bethlehem, Litchfield, Connecticut: The North (west or next) District beginning at ...to Oliver Churchels district to Jonathan Churchels. (Bethlehem Land Records. Dec 29, 1791 Family History Library film 3796) Jonathan Churchill appeared on the tax list in 1791 in Bethlehem with 45 acres, 10 animals, totaling 52-6-0 L (Bethlehem Town Clerk's Office). He apparently came to Woodbury and Bethlehem with his sons Oliver and Amos. On July 2, 1795 "the wife of Jonathan Churchwell (Churchill)" was received into the church at Bethlehem. (Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, Family History Library film 3803, Vol. 1, p. 7.) Bethlehem Land records: Bethlehem Land Records, Vol. 2, p. 63 dated 19 March 1793: Jonathan Churchel of Bethlehem sold for 164 pounds to Daniel Strong 54 acres in Bethlehem "the same piece I had of Josiah Whittlesey and John Walron...bounds north and east on highway, south on David Bellamy, west on Hesson." (Family History Library film 3796) The last recorded land recorded land record for him is to Mary Bird, leasing his land to her before their marriage in 1799. (Woodbury Land Records, Vol 29, Family History Library film 6162, item 2, p. 210.) 1790 CENSUS: Jonathan Churchel in Bethlem, Litchfield, CT. There is one male over 16 and one female in the household, obviously not the younger family of his son Jonathan who was in Litchfield by then. He lives next door to his son Oliver. (Heads of Families, First Census, 1790, Connecticut. Government Printing Office, WA, 1908, Family History Library book 974.6/X2b/1790. Jonathan Churchill p. 56. 1800 CENSUS Jonathan Churchill of Bethlehem was not found, which means he no longer had his own household. He probably was living with a family member because when his third wife died in 1803 he was still alive. WYOMING, PENNSYLVANIA "(Jonathan Churchill II) was engaged primarily in farming and had very few land transactions in Bethlehem. He did however speculate in land. His tendency was to follow his brother (William) in these ventures and consequently they became original proprietors of the Susquehanna Company which settled Wyoming, Pennsylvania. This resulted in a land venture that ended badly for most participating Connecticut families." (Bryson C. Cook, "Jonathan Churchill of Litchfield and Goshen,CT," 2011, p. 2) Jonathan Churchill was at Wyoming, Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. Jonathan Senior's brother William bought land there first, as he had done in Woodbury. Since Jonathan III was having children in the town of Litchfield at the time his father (Jonathan II) was in Susquehanna and it is known the Jonathan in Pennsylvania was there until 1783, it was almost certainly Jonathan II (b. 1724) in Pennsylvania. This land venture in what was at the time a portion of Litchfield County, CT was a deadly mistake, resulting in the loss of many lives because of the Revolutionary battles in the area and the conflicts with Pennsylvania citizens who also claimed the land. 1. The first reason we believe it was Jonathan II (b. 1724) in Pennsylvania is that Jonathan III (b. 1749) had five children for whom we have vital records in the town of Litchfield from 1775 to 1784. It doesn't make sense he spent time in Pennsylvania too. 2. The second reason is that William Churchill, the brother of Jonathan II was also in Pennsylvania. In a petition dated Nov. 11, 1783 citizens of Wyoming recounted the terrible price they had paid in both Indian raids and in being dispossessed of their homes and lands by the Pennamite Wars. On that petition are the names of Jonathan and William Churchill, making it quite certain it was Jonathan II (b. 1724) at Wyoming with his brother William. (The Susquehannah Company Papers, Vol. VII, Ed. by Robert J. Taylor, Family History Library book 974.8 H2su v. 7 pp. 321-325.) Jonathan Churchill was found in Wilkes-Barre, PA tax rolls beginning in 1771. (Harvey, A History of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, (Raeder Press, 1909), 732, 751, 877, 947, 952.) On October 3, 1772 the citizens of “Wilkesbarre on Susquehannah” signed a petition to the State of Connecticut to be annexed to one of the Connecticut counties, so as to come under the protection of the state. On that petition, dated the Second Thursday in October AD 1772 is the name of Jonathan Churchill, formerly of Woodbury, CT. (The Susquehannah Company Papers, Vol. VII, Ed. by Robert J. Taylor, Family History Library book 974.8 H2su v. 5 pp. 42-43.) His son Jonathan was from the town of Litchfield at that time. Again on April 3, 1773 the Connecticut settlers at Wilkesbarre petitioned the State of Connecticut for incorporation, recounting both the difficulties with Indians before 1768 and with the “vile incroachments of our neighbours the Pensilvanians” more recently. The name of Jonathan Churchill appears on the petition. (The Susquehannah Company Papers, Vol.VII, Ed. by Robert J. Taylor, Family History Library book 974.8 H2su v. 5 pp. 83-85.) Jonathan Churchill’s name appears on a petition dated 24 December 1773 from the citizens of Kingston “that there may be a County town Erected on ye west side of the East Branch of ye Susquehannah River as ye line of sd Purchase Extends." (The Susquehannah Company Papers, Vol. VII, Ed. by Robert J.Taylor, Family History Library book 974.8 H2su v. 5 pp. 215-217.) Tax Lists of Westmoreland, Pennsylvania show Jonathan Churchill in the Plymouth District 1776-1780. (Proceedings and collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Vol. 5, pp. 213, 223, 235.) (Family History Library film 1,425,653.) In a petition dated Nov. 11, 1783 citizens of Wyoming recounted the terrible price they had paid in both Indian raids and in being dispossessed of their homes and lands by the Pennamite Wars. On that petition are the names of Jonathan and William Churchill, leading us to believe it was Jonathan II (b.1724) at Wyoming with his brother William. (The Susquehannah Company Papers,Vol. VII, Ed. by Robert J. Taylor, pp. 321-325.) From this we know he didn't return to Woodbury before 1784. He may have served in the Revolutionary War in Wyoming County Pennsylvania, as most of the men did. He is not on enlistment records there, but those records are poor, especially during Indian raids and the Wyoming Massacre of 1778. DEATH: In 1799 Jonathan Churchill leased his lands in Woodbury to his future bride, Mary Bird. She died 1 Feb. 1803 and was noted to be "the wife of Jonathan Churchill," so he was still alive then. See marriage documentation for a complete transcription of this land record. (Woodbury Land Records, Vol 29, Family History Library film 6162, item 2, p. 210.) However, his death was not recorded.
