Note

BIRTH: "Patty Emily, daughter of Jonathan Churchel and Comfort his wife was born May 13, 1808." (Town Records of Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, 1701-1881, 2:132, FHL film 1,516,502.) Cited in Barbour Collection of Litchfield Vital Records, citing Vital Records 1:132: "Patty Emily, d. Jonathan & Comfort Churchill, b. May 1, 1808."

HER NAME 1. Her birth record gives her name as Patty Emily 2. She was called Emily in P.W. Cook Diary (p. 7) and Litchfield Vit Records 1:132 3. She is called Mary Emily on her marriage record at Roxbury, Conn. "David Towsey Taylor md Mary Emily Churchill, 25 Mar 1828." 4. The Churchill Family of America published a confusion with her name and claimed she was Polly (her half sister) who married Daniel Taylor. That confusion is the result of a common practice then of interchanging the names of Phebe, Polly and Mary. 5. Cothren, the author of The History of Woodbury, gives her name as Mary E. Church with her marriage taking place in Woodbury. 6. The 1850 Census lists her as Emily Taylor. 7. Her headstone reads Mary E. Taylor wife of David T. Taylor. 8. I have listed her name Mary Emily Churchill because that is what she was called on her marriage and death records.

DEATH: Taylor Cemetery, Bangor, Van Buren, Michigan. Buried in the 14th row next to her husband: "Mary E., wife of David T. Taylor died April 18, 1857, ae 49."

Note

Phineas Wolcott Cook, The Life and History of Phineas Wolcott Cook, 7. "Emily was married to a man by the name of David Tousey Tailer." Connecticut State Library, Roxbury First Congregational Church 1742-1930 (Hartford, Connecticut: 1942-1963), 30. "CHURCHILL, Mary Emily of Litchfield, m. David Towsey Taylor of Newtown, Mar. 25, 1828." William Cothren, History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut, 3:609. "1828: David T. Taylor of Newtown and Mary E. Church of Litchfield, March 25." (Her last name reads, Church not Churchill)
