Note | BIRTH: "Polly, daughter to Jonathan & Sarah Churchil b. 8 Apr 1784, (Town Records of Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, 1701-1881, 2:133, FHL film 1,516,502.) Also cited in Barbour Collection of Litchfield Vital Records, Vol. 23, p. 56: Polly, d. Jonathan & Sarah Churchill, b. Apr. 8, 1784," Citing Litchfield, Conn. Vital Records, GS#2973 item 4, pp. 49-50; Vol 1, p. 133 Phineas W. Cook Family Org. researchers. Alonzo L. Cook and others. Phineas Wolcott Cook temple records: "Polly Churchill, born 1785 in Connecticut, died 2 Sept 1810," Submitted by Harriet Betsey Cook Teeples, great-niece, from records of Phineas Wolcott Cook, Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, Vol. C, p. 37, #1294, FHL 17797) MARRIAGE and FAMILY Md. (2) Amasa Cook. DEATH: The Logan temple record of Phineas W. Cook gives her death date 2 Sept. 1810. Polly Churchill, born 1785 in Connecticut, died 2 Sept 1810, Submitted by Harriet Betsey Cook Teeples, great-niece, from records of Phineas Wolcott Cook, Logan Temple Endowments for the Dead, Vol. C, p. 37, #1294, FHL 17797) Phineas Wolcott Cook wrote in his journal she had a child Amasa Phillip Cook, but he was actually the son of Amasa's second wife. The book "The Churchill Family of America" published an incorrect marriage for her. They were confused with her name and thought she was Mary Emily (her half sister) who married Daniel Taylor. That confusion is the result of a common practice then of interchanging the names of Polly and Mary. We know from Vital, probate and cemetery l records that Polly married Amasa Cook and Mary Emily married Daniel Taylor. HER GRANDMOTHER'S PROBATE: Sarah Dunk Burgess (Found by Bryson C. Cook at the Litchfield County Courthouse Nov. 2010). Dated January, 1796: "Heirs named, each to receive £8.13.1: James Burgess, Ebenezer Burgess, Mary Troop, Hannah Lovejoy, Irene Lemmon. Sarah was not named because she had already died, but her children were named as Grand heirs, each to receive £1.4.10: Sarah, Josiah, Leman, Lucy, Polly, Irene and Phebe "Churchel." (Litchfield Probate Records on Family History Library film 1022330.) DEATH Logan Temple Recorder, Endowments for the Dead, Book B, 20 April 1885-28 May 1886 (Salt Lake City, Utah: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1958), [FHL 177,9576] p. 37, ref. # 1294. "Polly Churchill, b. 1785, CT, d. 2 Sept. 1810; baptized: 22 June 1886, proxy: Harriet Betsey Cook Teeples, relation, grand niece." |

Note | The history of Goshen, p. 451: "Amasa Cook, b. _____: m. (1) Polly Churchill; (2) Sally Rowe. Child. b. Goshen: Philip. (History of the Town of Goshen," by L.M. Norton, 1987, p. 451, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h, p. 451) Also found in The Churchill Family in America, 367. "Polly: Born April 8, 1784; m. 1st David Taylor; m. 2nd Amasa Cook." She never married David Taylor. It’s possible that Gardiner A. Churchill confused Polly with Patti Emily Churchill who married David Tousey Taylor. |
