Note | BIRTH Phineas W. Cook, who was 6 years younger than Amasa Philip, believed Polly Churchill was the mother of Amasa Philip, but that opinion was from memory, not from personal experience. He wrote in his personal history: " Mother had two sisters. One was the wife of Uncle Amasa, and she had one son. His name was Amasa Philip. Her name was Polly. I believe she did not live long after this. This is all I can tell about her." Family Temple Records give her information "Polly Churchill, b. 1785, CT, d. 2 Sept. 1810." In 1826 Amasa Philip Cook was recorded in court records to be 13 years old: "Phineas Cook is to be the guardian of Amasa P. Cook who is 13 years old. (Signed) April 29, 1826." Census records also show his birth to be 1813. If that is the case, he could not be Polly's son. Rather he must be the child of Sally Rowe, who was recorded in the court papers at the death of Amasa as the child's mother. The history of Goshen, p. 451: "Amasa Cook, b. _____: m. (1) Polly Churchill; (2) Sally Rowe. Child. b. Goshen: Philip. Apparently his name was written Amasa P. Cook in 1826 when Phineas Cook was made the guardian of "Amasa P. Cook." His father having already died, when his mother Sally Rowe Cook remarried in 1826 a record for guardianship was registered. Amasa P. Cook (minor) in Probate #1592 of Goshen Probate Records was declared in the guardianship of Phineas Cook, his uncle. GUARDIANSHIP From Amasa’s probate papers we learn that in 1826 his brother, Phineas, was appointed a guardian to Amasa Phillip Cook. In those papers Amasa Phillip was reported to be about thirteen years old. That would make his birth year 1813 or three years after Polly died. In the same probate Sally Baldwin, the former widow of Amasa, gave her, "… consent to have Phineas Cook the guardian for my son Amasy P. Cook. (Litchfield Probate District # 1591 Amasa Cook, April 29, 1826. Amasa P. Cook son of Amasa 2nd) For Guardianship Phineas Cook of Goshen and Andrew Hand of Litchfield paid $500 bond. Phineas is to be the guardian of Amasa P. Cook who is 13 years old. Signed April 29, 1826 HIS MOTHER'S PROBATE: “….probate, I give my consent to have Phinehas Cook the guardian of my son Amasa P. Cook.” Signed Sally Baldwin 1870 CENSUS Almont, Lapier, Michigan: Amasa P. Cook, a plasterer and stone mason, born 1813 in Connecticut. His wife Abigail was born 1813 in New York. Daughter Helena, age 28, born Michigan. DEATH Amasa P. Cook, born about 1812 in Connecticut, died 27 April 1888 at Pontiac, Oakland, Michigan. He is a male, age 76; wife is Abigail.
