Note | BIRTH Josiah, son of Jonathan and Lydia Churchell, FHL film 2983, Item 8, p. 19, Woodbury Vital Records. Fourth child of Jonathan and Lydia (Smith) Churchill: JOSIAH b. Feb. 25, 1754. Died during the war of the Revolution. (Source: The Churchill Family in America, Compiled by Gardner Asaph Churchill and Nathaniel Wiley Churchill, Edited by George M. Madison, Published by the family of George A. Churchill, 1904, https://archive.org/details/churchillfamilyi01church, Family History Library book 929.273/C475c, p. 344.) REVOLUTIONARY WAR: "Josiah Churchell" enlisted March 2, 1776, Capt. Parmelee's Co, Col. Charles Burrell Battalion. (Rolls and Lists of Connecticut Men in the Revolution, Vol. 1, Ct. Historical Society, FHL book 974.6 M2r, Vol 1, p. 38.) It was noted in "The Churchill Family of America" that he died in the Revolutionary War. He and his brother Jonathan are recorded as Revolutionary War enlistees, but it is likely all the brothers enlisted as well. (Sons of the American Revolution application, 506115. Also see, Connecticut Men in the Revolution, 60,481.) DEATH: Died in the Revolution ("Churchill Family of America," by Gardner A. Churchill, p. 344) Since he is not found in any record after 1776, he must have died in the war. Another reason for supposing that Josiah died in 1776 is that Jonathan named his first son, born 11 January 1777, Josiah. This is consistent with the families’ naming patterns which consisted of naming the next new born for the deceased. |
