BIRTH: Woodruff Ward Record of Members, 1900-1958, FHL film 27,421, item 2: Samuel C. Bryson, (I've never seen the C. in his name before.) son of Samuel Bryson and Sarah Ann Connery, b. 11 April1845 at Belfast, Down, Ireland. Baptized 31 Oct. 1854 by Samuel Bryson Sen. and confirmed the same day by James Bell. Died Sept. 3, 1919. EMIGRATION: "Emigration Records, 1854-1855," Book 1040, British Mission, (LDS film 25690, item 3, p. 92, 169.) Date of emigration is 22 August, 1855. He was ten years old. LDS CHURCH: Family Records state he was baptized 31 Oct. 1854. Baptism date 1855 is listed on his card for ordination to the Seventy. He was baptised by his father, Samuel Sen. and confirmed by James Bell. Ordination was 1 July 1865 by A.P. Rockwood. (Record 1 C Seventies , p. 365.) Also in Woodruff Ward Records, FHL film 27,421 Ordained an Elder March 5, 1865 by Bishop Raleigh, a Seventy July 1, 1865 by Pres. John Young; a High Priest Jan. 3, 1897 by John M. Baxter. It was said he had a gift of healing...almost always called in during times of sickness and even epidemics, but never became sick from his service." ("History of Samuel Bryson Jr.," p. 2 by Margaret Longhurst) In 1882 he was called on a mission for two years. ("Chronological List of Missionaries, 1860-1894," Book B (FHL film 25664, item 1, p. 65.) He served from 6 Feb. 1883 to Dec. 1884 in the Northern States Mission. ("Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude," D.U.P., p. 403.) Kenneth Longhurst believed this mission was filled by Samuel Bryson Sr. He served a mission for the LDS Church from 5 Feb. 1883 to Dec. 1884 in the Northern States Mission. He left his family of 7 home in very bad times, little food or clothing caused much sufferng for them." (Kenneth Longhurst, "Samuel Bryson, a Weaver by Trade") Everything he said was true, but about Samuel Jr. He could have served a second mission. ECIF Card C.23, Lib. No. 3067, p. 535 states S. Bryson was a reurning missionary March 7, 1912, "Sailed on S.S. Corsican." "He was one of the first from the Woodruff Ward to fill a mission. He spent two and one-half years in the Northern States in 1883." ("The First 100 Years in Woodruff," FHL 979.213/W1 H2w, p. 135.) One of four men who presented to the court the Articles of Agreement for the "Woodruff Ecclestiastical Ward of the Bear Lake Stake of Zion." May 13, 1885, presented by Bp. William H. Lee, John Cox, Samuel Bryson and Anson C. Call. (Probate and Guardianship Records of Rich County, Family History Library film 480877, unnumbered pages at the end of roll, including minutes from 1865 to 1888.) "He was in the Superintendency of the first Sunday School organized in the ward and held that position for 25 years. He spent many years as a Seventy in the Stake and traveled on missionary assignments from Almy, Wyoming, on the South to Soda Springs, Idaho, on the north, a distance that took almost a week to travel with team and wagon. When the Woodruff Stake was created, he served on the High Council. He attended conference, both general and stake." ("The First 100 Years in Woodruff," FHL 979.213/W1 H2w, p. 136.) OCCUPATION: "At one time he worked at the Salt Lake Temple rock quarry. When he was about 19, he spent three months making a trip to Omaha for freight. With part of his pay he bought a new saddle." Horses were his hobby. He loved them and was never happier than when caring for and grooming them...friends and neighbors brought their wild horses for him to tame. He always had a sleek, well-matched team that was his special pride..." "History of Samuel Bryson Jr." by Margaret Longhurst., p. 1 His parents were both weavers. Samuel Jr. remembered delivering cloth his parents had made to citizens in Glasgow, Scotland as a boy. He also took up the trade. "He weaved the cloth for his first suit of clothes after his marriage to Tryphena Fairchild. Tryphena had carded the wool, he weaved the cloth, and she made the suit by hand." ("The History of Sarah Ann Conery" by Dorothy Larson Bryson from bits and pieces collected, p. 2) HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK-EXPEDITION: "At one tme, because of the rigorous climate Samuel decided to investigate the opportunities of Southern Utah. The company he joined going South proved to be the famous "Hole in the Rock Expedition," a hazardous experience. He returned home and lived in Woodruff the rest of his days." ("The First 100 Years in Woodruff," FHL 979.213/W1 H2w, p. 135.) Samuel Bryson joined the Hole in the Rock expedition; and, as one of the few men without his family present, became one of its leaders. (See "The Saga of San Juan," second edition, by Cornelia A. Perkins, DUP, LDS book 979.259 H2p, 1968, p. 340-346.) WOODRUFF: They moved to Woodruff in 1871, among the pioneer families. (Polly Tryphena Fairchild Bryson autobiography p. 5.) In "The Woodruff Book" (FHL 1,597,546, item 5, p. 15, 19) it states he was among the first permanent settlers, including W. H. Lee, Peter Cornia Sr. and Richard Warwich. History of this family in "Rich Memories," by Mildred Hath Thomson, F832.R5 52x 1962, p. 318. "Samuel Bryson, one of the Woodruff Pioneers...At the age of ten years, he came with his father's family to Utah as converts to the Church and made their home at Bountiful, Utah, where he lived until the fall of 1871 when he came to Woodruff to make his home. His family at that time consisted of his wife, two small children and his wife's mother,Tryphena Pomeroy Fairchild." ("The First 100 Years in Woodruff," FHL 979.213/W1 H2w, p. 135.) "They first lived in the town proper but to be closer to his work, he built a home on his farm which was east of town and moved his family there. They lived here until being advised by the Church authorities, he built the home now owned by his son, Luther on the corner of Main and Canyon Street." ("The First 100 Years in Woodruff," FHL 979.213/W1 H2w, p. 136.) The new home was built in 1895 with two-foot thick walls and beatiful bay winows. There were five bedrooms, a small basement pantry and a beautiful staircase. Ninety years later the paint on the woodwork was original and still beautiful.
