Note | BIRTH Family tradition has maintained this daughter, although there were no vital records to prove her birth. Since Goshen records are non-existent for this time period, we have to assume the family tradition is correct. "The History of the Town of Goshen" by Hibbard p. 451 lists Daniel Cook and children Amasa and Phineas, but without birth dates. Spouses and chldren are named, but the child Eliza is not named. Because the book was compiled much later from existing town records, she almost certainly died early and was forgotten. ("History of the Town of Goshen," by L.M. Norton, 1987, p. 451, Family History Library book 974.61/G1 H2h) 1790 CENSUS There are several listings for Daniel Cook in the Litchfield Census for 1790. However, a Daniel Cook on p. 65 listed under Litchfield town is likely ours because his brothers are on the same page, and the other from Litchfield has only one male son. If that is the case, there was another female in the household, which could be Eliza. (Heads of Families, First Census, 1790, Connecticut. Government Printing Office, WA, 1908, Family History Library book 974.6/X2b/1790, p. 65.) RESEARCH Hale collection of Newspaper clippings lists the following possibilities: 1. Betsy Cook, p. 455, Norwitch Courier, died at age 81 Sept. 19, 1861. (I eliminated this because it seemed so very far from home and it appears to be her married name.) 2. Miss Betsy Cook, age 80, died Jan. 24, 1859, Hartford Courier. (Birth-1780-1781: a possibility) Barbour collection of births and marriages list the following for Connecticut between 1779-1840. (I eliminated all of them because none were from Goshen, although there's always the possibility) 3. Betsey Cooke (Danbury Vital Records 1:474) was born Dec. 30, 1779. Was the daughter of William. 4. Betsey Cook married Jedediah Austin of Hopkinton, 1823. 5. Betsey Cook married Stewart Chapman of Stonington, 1829. 6. Betsey Cook of Wallingford married Alexander Cook in 1836 (Meriden Vital Records) 7. Betsey Cook married Freden P. Coe of Lebanon in 1846. 8. Betsy Cook of Preston married Darius Hazen of Norwich, 1807 9. Betsey Cooke of Colchester married Marvin Mitchell, 1828 (Colchester Vital Records) From Litchfield records only: 10. Betsy Cook died June 8, 1808, age 16 (this would put her birth at 1792.) (Litchfield Inscriptions p. 610.) I followed through on this one and wrote a letter to Evelyn Goodwin of the Department of Public Records, Litchfield, Co. She was listed with her parents on the record in their office. The parents were Roger and Elizabeth Cook. Her mother Elizabeth died at the age of 31 on June 11, 1807. 11. Elizabeth or Betsy Cook, born March 6, 1797. "The History of Goshen" by the Rev. A. G. Hibbard, Hartford, Ct,. 1897, p. 451, records this Eliza who never married as the daughter of Moses. She appeared in the 1850 census at age 53 and in the 1870 census in Goshen. She was age 74, with her sister Harriet, 75, next door to their father Moses Cook (uncle of Daniel Cook Sr.) She received a large piece of land and bank stock in her father's will in 1841; died unmarried in 1890. 12. Eliza Cook died Jan 1, 1877 at age 85. (Litchfield and Morris Inscriptions, p. 65._ Also in "The Litchfield Enquirer." This is the date Melvin Cook gave as Eliza's death date. However, I also wrote a letter about this one to the Oliver Wolcott Library. Their reply was dated Jan. 29, 1993 from Patricia L. Joy. They found that she was named Mrs. Eliza Cook who died in Terryville, which eliminates our Eliza. |
