Note | BIRTH: No evidence this is the son of John Porter. Since he was 26-44 on the 1820 census, he was born some time between 1776 and 1794. On the 1850 Census he was 59, putting his birth in 1791. STEUBEN-SCHUYLER-YATES COUNTIES: "Barrington was not an original town of Yates County. On the 18th of March, 1796, Steuben County was erected, and included within its boundaries all that is now called Barrington, and Starkey as well. Upon the organization of Steuben, and the formation of its territory into townships, all that is now Barrington, together with what is now called Starkey and Tyrone, Wayne and Reading, comprised the original town of Frederickton. The town of Reading was afterward set off, and Wayne organized, including Barrington." (http://www.townofbarrington.org/history/history.htm) 1820 CENSUS: Thomas Porter is the only one of that surname in Wayne, Steuben, New York. Since John Porter is known to have been living in Wayne in 1822 when he re-submitted his Revolutionary War Pension Application, it is logical he was living with or near his son. In this household there is 1 male less than 10 and one 26-44. There are two females 10-16 and one 26-44. (1820 U S Census; Census Place: Reading, Steuben, New York; Page: 259; NARA Roll: M33_74; Image: 270, Ancestry.com) 1830 CENSUS: No John Porter in Steuben or Yates Counties. Thomas Porter who may be his son was in Barrington, Yates County (formerly Wayne and Reading in Steuben County) until his death. Apparently none of them moved but simply became part of the new county. 1835 STATE CENSUS: Barrington, 5 males, including head of family; 1 female including head of family. She is over 45. 30 improved acres. 1845 STATE CENSUS, Barrington: 3 males and 2 females. No married persons under 45. Two children 5-16. 40 acres under cultivation, 11 cattle, 700 pounds butter produced the preceding year. 1850 CENSUS: Barrington, Yates, New York, Thomas Porter is a farmer, age 59, born in Connecticut. His wife is Polly, age 58, born New York, Children are Albert age 19, born New York (attends school); Caroline age 14, born New York (attends school); Lucinda Porter, age 28, born New York. Also in the household: Sarah Carner, age 60, born New York 1860 CENSUS: In Barrington Polly, Caroline and Lucinda are enumerated, but Thomas apparently has died. |
