Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Goshen Vital Records: "Nathanial son of Nathan." (F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, vol 14, p. 53. Nathan and Nathaniel were consistently interchangeable in vital records. Source is Vol 1, p. 239 Vital Records.) There is no evidence he is the son of Nathaniel Porter son of John, but it is known that family was in Goshen at the right time period, and there was no other Porter family. BIRTH RESEARCH: 1. Nathaniel of Salisbury was in Berkshire County, Mass. In 1775, he enlisted in the Revolutionary War at Pittsfield with his brother Joseph. (List of Capt. Noble's minute-men who marched to Cambridge on the Lexington alarm : - Term of service, nine days; entered service April 22, 1775.) 1. Land and Probate records show Nathaniel Porter of New Milford probably never left town. He apparently was there until the end of his life. (Janet Porter records) 2. Nathaniel Porter Sr. of Waterbury, probably never left, but his son Nathan ended up in Sandisfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts with his brothers Simeon and David. 3. Nathaniel Porter Jr. of Lebanon, whose brother Joshua was in Salisbury and also Great Barrington with this Porter family was never married, so this child is certainly not his. No evidence he ever came to either place. OTHER RESEARCH: 1830: Census, Sherborne, Chenango, New York, M: one 50-60 living next to Gardner Porter 15-20. Gardiner Porter is the son of his Uncle David Porter. David didn't name any of his sons, Nathaniel. Of the New York census Nathans, Nathl, and Nathaniels he is the only one to be the right age for Nathaniel born in 1775. Nathaniel and "Gardner" were listed next to each other in the census. So I believe these cousins lived next to each other in Sherborne, NY. (Bryson Cook) |
