Note | BIRTH Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 380, as printed in Books/Google.com. "Benjamin Porter, a native of Goshen, Conn. was born November 8, 1793. Her paternal grandfather, Deacon Benjamin Porter, was a native of the same place and traced his ancestry to England." Also found in Querie, Jan. 1907 in N.E.H.G.R., Vol 61, p. 96 by Mary H. Hosmer, 536 East Main St. Baravia, N.Y. The part about Deacon Benjamin Porter was the continuation of a mistake made long ago when the Bethlehem Porters were thought to have originated in Windsor and Hartford. That same mistake was published in many books and contributed to the difficulty in finding the real family. BATAVIA Benjamin Porter Jr. appointed one of 5 commissioners to build the new Genesee Co. Jail, Mar. 19, 1831. Earned 1.25/day. Still stands on the south side of West Main in Batavia. (Descriptive and Biog. Rec. of Gen. Co., N.Y., F.H.L. book 974.792 H2n, p. 177.) LAND RECORDS: Many entries for Benjamin Porter Jr. from Feb. 1817 to 1828, (Land Ledger for Batavia, 1802-1835, F.H.L. film 871,561, item 3, p. 70.) PROFESSION: Both Benjamin Sr and Jr. were carpenters (Saul's Notes on Genesee County People, Vol. 5. (by Correspondence July 8, 2005 from Paula J. Meyer, Lib.) MICHIGAN: "Benjamin Porter was reared in Conn. and accompanied his parents to N.Y. where he learned carpentering of his father and followed the trade until coming to Michigan in 1833. He was a resident thereafter of Detroit until 1840. The year prior to this he entered upon a contract for building the penitentiary at Jackson and in consequence removed his family hither." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 380.) Was warden of the prison for a while, but returned to his building profession. "Detroit Michigan, Jan 10 (no year) D.W. Woods Lumber dealer of Jackson Michigan made an assignment to Benjamin Porter today. Liabilities $38000; assets unknown." A newspaper clipping on p. 2 of notebook found in NEHGS library, "Letters from Henry P Andrews," (Mss A-4658, p. 2, No Ref. or date.) CHARACTER Speaking about his daughter Pauline: "Her father, Benjamin Porter, having been a man kind in his family and a highly respected citizen, was just such a man as was needed in the development of a new coutry, being industrious and enterprising and possessing excellent judgement. Coming to this region prior to the days of railroads he experienced with the people around him many of the hardships of pioneer life. His mind was constantly devising some new scheme that would advance the interests of the people about him. He at one time built a scow upon which he loaded his tools and a quantity of material for the purpose of going down the Grand River to Lansing. He could not make the passage of the falls and was obliged to unload and carry his merchandise around, reloading below. This was only one of the many adventures which he encountered and from which he usually came out with flying colors." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 381, as printed in Books/Google.com.) DEATH (Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson County, Michigan, Hilda Van Auken, p. 381.) His death was also recorded in Genesee County, NY: "Benjamin Porter died ae 68 years , pub. 8/12/1862" (Republican Advocate: Newspaper index 1820-1876, compiled by the Genesee County History Department, Susan L. Conklin, County Historian, July 2000.) |
