Note | BIRTH: She was 75 when she died in 1829. PROOF of PARENTS Ruth and her husband James Eggleston signed a deposition for the Revolutionary War application of John Porter, then of Reading, Steuben, New York. He enlisted in Bethlehem, Ct. before 1779. In 1779 he and his wife and one child moved to Watertown in a home owned by Ruth and James Eggleston of Bethlehem where he enlisted again and was gone at least 10 months, according to their letter. He was known as John Jr. in the letter, almost certainly her brother. Ruth and James were living in Watertown at that time and no doubt assisted John's wife and child while he was gone. In John Porter's probate packet there is also a letter from Benjamin Porter of Genesee County, New York. (Revolutionary War Pension Application of John Porter, Family History Library film 971,954, #R8344, pp. 208-234.) BETHLEHEM: After the death of their father John and his second wife Rebecca, Ruth and her husband James Eggleston and Robert with his wife returned to Bethlehem where they lived until their deaths. Their children continued to live there for generations. Several of the children of their grandfather Nathaniel Porter also returned to Bethlehem. James and Joanna Frisbie, Jacob and Ruth Frisbie, Thomas and Beulah Porter had all moved away and returned. The Egglestons lived near their Frisbie cousins at the time of the 1790 census. DEATH: "Ruth wife of James Eggleston died of old age, age 75, Sept. 10, 1829." Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, Vol. 2, p. 30, Family History Library film 3803, item 2. NOTE: There is no primary evidence Ruth's maiden surname is Porter. It was never written in Bethlehem or Watertown records, and there is no primary record of the marriage. A dearth of vital records at that time makes it highly unikely we will ever be able to prove the connection. However, evidence seems to point her to the Bethlehem John Porter family. Proof of her parents Ruth is the daughter of John and Deborah Porter There are no vital records for this family, but through a study of land and probate records, we are quite certain she was the daughter of John and Deborah Porter. Because she died at age 75, September 10, 1829, we can estimate her birth at 1754, two years before her younger sister Elizabeth was born. Ruth and her husband James Eggleston signed a deposition for the Revolutionary War application of John Porter, then of Reading, Steuben, New York. He enlisted in Bethlehem, Ct. before 1779. In 1779 he and his wife and one child moved to Watertown in a home owned by Ruth and James Eggleston where he enlisted again and was gone at least 10 months, according to their letter. He was known as John Jr. in the letter, almost certainly her brother. Ruth and James were living in Watertown at that time and no doubt assisted John's wife and child while he was gone. In John Porter's probate packet there is also a letter from Benjamin Porter of Genesee County, New York, another brother. (Revolutionary War Pension Application of John Porter, Family History Library film 971,954, #R8344, pp. 208-234.) Bethlehem, Connecticut was her place of birth. After the death of their father John and his second wife Rebecca, Ruth and Robert returned to Bethlehem where they lived until their deaths. |

Note | Family records show James Eggleston married Lydia Wetmore 12 June 1770 at Middletown. The first child of James and Ruth is Lydia, perhaps in memory of his first wife. Nevertheless, I am not certain this isn't another James Eggleston and the first James and his wife Lydia are somewhere else. I assume I am right because this James Eggleston is clearly from Waterbury and Bethlehem, and there is only one man of that name in those towns. However, because his wife was not named on birth records, these could be the children of Lydia. I only know for certain James and Ruth were married in 1779 because they made deposition for John Porter's Revolutionary War application that he had lived in their house in Waterbury that year. |
