Barbour, housed at State Library, Hartford, Connecticut; Family History Library microfilm) MARRIAGE and FAMILY James and Ruth Eggleston listed with children Lydia b. Nov. 16 1773; Anna, b. Sept 5, 1775; James, b. Oct. 13, 1777; Roswell, b. Oct. 18, 1779; and Prosper, b. Sept 30, 1781. All are documented from town vital records, but only James is named. (The Town and City of Waterbury, CT...Ed by Joseph Anderson, Vol. 1, p. Ap47, (Family History Library book 974.67/W1 H2a Vol. 1.) Original vital records for this family are recorded mixed with land records in Town Records of Waterbury, Vol 1, Family History Library film 1412,886, item 3) WATERBURY No land record for any Eggleston. Nothing in town records, cemeteries except for Joel (nephew) and John Eggleston (James' brother.) However in town family records James and Joel are both listed with their families: James and Ruth Eggleston listed with children Lydia b. Nov. 16 1773; Anna, b. Sept 5, 1775; James, b. Oct. 13, 1777; Roswell, b. Oct. 18, 1779; and Prosper, b. Sept 30, 1781. All are documented from town vital records. (The Town and City of Waterbury, CT...Ed by Joseph Anderson, Vol. 1, p. Ap47, (Family History Library book 974.67/W1 H2a Vol. 1.) Original vital records for this family are recorded mixed with land records in Town Records of Waterbury, Vol 1, Family History Library film 1412,886, item 3) WATERTOWN James Eggleston and wife on a list of members of the church at Westbury parish. The list is not dated but in a series of other events 1780-90. (Watertown Congregational Church Records, Vol. 2, p. 2, Family History Library film 6091) James paid 43 pounds tax in 1773. Taxes were collected again in 1776, 1779 and 1781, but neither James nor his brother John were listed. It is known James was in Bethlehem by then. ("Ancient Burying Grounds of the town of Waterbury, CT," Family History Library book 974.67/W1 V3pk, p. 279-306.) Land Records of Watertown: James was "of Waterbury" selling land in Westbury parish 11 May, 1779 (Vol 1, p. 27 (Family History Library film 6079) James of Watertown bought land in 1st tier Westbury 9 June 1783 (Vol 1, p. 80, Family History Library film 6079) James Egleston "of Woodbury" bought land in Westbury, bounds south on his own land, 4 Oct 1783 (Vol 2, p. 30, Family History Library film 6079) James was of Watertown when he bought land in Westbury Society, 17 April 1784, bounds E. on his own land (Vol 2, p. 178, (Family History Library film 6079) James "of Watertown" sold land in Westbury, including his home lot with house 17 April 1785, vol. 2, p. 329, Family History Library film 6079) James of Woodbury and John of Watertown bought land in Watertown 29 Sept 1786, (Vol 3, p. 144, Family History Library film 6080.) A disputed boundary settled by committee. James and John and 2 others with land on the highway which divides Waterbury from Woodbury. 28 April 1787, (Vol. 3, p. 483, Family History Library film 6080.) James signed to give up land for highway 4 Dec. 1795, Vol. 6, p. 87, Family History Library film 6081) James sold land in Watertown by highway between Watertown and Bethlehem, bounds East on his own land. (Vol. 8, p. 62, Family History Library film 6082) James mortgaged 44 acres land in Bethlehem and Westbury, to be paid in 3 years (Vol. 10, p. 220, Family History Library film 6083. also in Bethlehem Land Records, Vol. 4, p. 113, Family History Library film 3797.) REVOLUTIONARY WAR 3 CT Regiment, Private, James Egleston Reference Card. Original filed under Eggleston, James #1226. Another card: Swift's CT Regiment, Private, #1225. (Family History Library film 882,857.) Not the present James, because the Pension Application for James Eggleston lists Jemima as his wife which would be the James Eggleston at Torrington. A petition 25 April 1775 at Waterbury to form a voluntary company to protect themselves and their town "in time of danger" signed by James Eggleston and Peter Welton Jr. (Rev War Records, Series 1, Part 1, 1764-1767, p. 107, Vol 1, Family History Library film 3534) "James Eggleston, Private, Military Service Connecticut: Applied for pension 1 April 1818. Death 1 November 1830." His death date indicates this is almost certainly the right James Eggleston. (United States Revolutionary War Payment Ledgers, 1818-1872, 2-vol B Revolutionary War pensioners, p. 194. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9WB-ZSTR?i=195&cc=2069831) BETHLEHEM They moved to Bethlehem in 1784 (see land records). Although land records occasionally stated he was "of Watertown" after that date, they were in Bethlehem because his daughter Ruth was born in Bethlehem in May of 1789. (Bethlehem Ct. Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, Family History Library film 3803, Vol. 1, p. 18.) Land Records: Luke Steel of Woodbury sold for 300 pounds to James Eggleston of Watertown land in Bethlehem, 20 acres with house and barn. It is the 2nd lot in the 4th Tier, 17 April 1784. (Woodbury Land Records, Vol. 24, p. 117, Family History Library film 6160.) It is the only Woodbury land record from 1659 to 1884 for him. Bethlehem Land Records show James Eggleston of Bethlehem bought 23 acres, bounded east on James' own land, 11 July 1794. (Bethlehem Land Rec. Vol. 2, p. 128, Family History Library film 3796.) 1790 CENSUS James Eggleston, Bethlehem, Ct. One male over 16, 5 males under 16 and 4 females. James and Ruth had six children by 1790, 3 boys and 3 girls. James was over 16 and five boys were counted under the age of 16. Apparently there were two boys for whom we have no records. Ruth and the three daughters make the 4 females. Neighbors are Daniel & Ernie Everet, Thomas Ford, James, Jacob, Jacob Jr. and Amos Frisbie, (The Frisbies are Ruth's cousins.) 1810 CENSUS James Eggleston, Bethlehem, Ct. One male 10-15 and one 16-25 in the household. James is over 45. One female 16-25 and one over 45. Since he does not appear in the 1800 Census, it is difficult to determine his age. It is only a guess he is the James born in 1743 in Middletown. 1820 CENSUS James Eggleston, Bethlehem, CT. 1 male and 1 female, both over 45. 1830 CENSUS Bethlehem, CT, probably living in the household of Roswell his son: One male 10-15, one 15-20, one 20-30 and Roswell is probably the one 50-60 (he would be 51). An older male, probably James, is 80-90. One female is 30-40 and one 40-50. DEATH Bethlehem Congregational Church records (Family History Library film 3803) list Ruth's death, but there is a gap between 1829 and 1835, which is apparently when James died. A search of the Christ Church (Episcopal Society) records revealed James was not listed there either. (Family History Library film 3802) There is no probate for any Eggleston in Bethlehem or Woodbury. (JSP 1-8-2010) A search of Middletown probates revealed no probate for his parents either. His death is recorded in US Revolutionary War Payment Ledgers: "James Eggleston, Private, Military Service Connecticut: Applied for pension 1 April 1818. Death 1 November 1830." His death date indicates this is almost certainly the right James Eggleston. (United States Revolutionary War Payment Ledgers, 1818-1872, 2-vol B Revolutionary War pensioners, p. 194. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9WB-ZSTR?i=195&cc=2069831) PROBATE A search of Woodbury and Bethlehem Probates from 1773-1845 showed there were no Eggleston Probates. (JSP 1-22-2010) NOTE: There is another man named James Eggleston in Torrington, Litchfield, CT. He is the son of Edward (born April 14, 1736) and Esther. Married in 1760 Elizabeth Curtis who died in 1801. He died 1807. Had 2 children: James who married Jemima Phelps of Torrington in 1789 and Curtis who married Amelia Fowler in 1799. (One of Curtis's descendants is Esther who married George Wood and lives in Millville, Utah.) (The Filer Family, Family History Library book 929.273, F993a, p. 443.) `ORDINANCES: Family History Library film. 456934. Sealed to Ambrose Eggleston and Elizabeth Clark. Ordinances were not done for any of his children except Lydia. (This ordinance is only found by typing in Lydia Eggleston, and she is sealed to her father James.) Baptism also done 19 Feb. 1936, but no parents or birth date given. He was just listed "of Waterbury, born about 1746." (Film 170629, ref. 3460, p. 92.) MARRIAGE (1) Married 12 June 1770 Lydia Wetmore at Waterbury, New Haven, CT. She apparently died before 1772. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION (1) "James Eggleston and Lydia Wetmore were married 12 June 1770 at Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut." (https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=3719&h=53781&tid=&pid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=CIC767&_phstart=success) (Source Citation Source Information Ancestry.com. Early Connecticut Marriages as Found on Ancient Church Records Prior to 1800. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1997.) MARRIAGE (2) Married (2) Ruth Porter, who is the mother of all the children. MARRIAGE DOCUMENTATION (2) There is no vital record for this marriage, which probably took place in Woodbury where vital records were not kept at this time. However, Ruth is the mother of all the children, beginning with Lydia who was born in 1773: James and Ruth Eggleston listed with children Lydia b. 1.) Original vital records for this family are recorded mixed with land records in Town Records of Waterbuy, Vol 1, Family History Library film 1412,886, item 3) |
Note | Family records show James Eggleston married Lydia Wetmore 12 June 1770 at Middletown. The first child of James and Ruth is Lydia, perhaps in memory of his first wife. Nevertheless, I am not certain this isn't another James Eggleston and the first James and his wife Lydia are somewhere else. I assume I am right because this James Eggleston is clearly from Waterbury and Bethlehem, and there is only one man of that name in those towns. However, because his wife was not named on birth records, these could be the children of Lydia. I only know for certain James and Ruth were married in 1779 because they made deposition for John Porter's Revolutionary War application that he had lived in their house in Waterbury that year. |
Note | If the husband of Ruth Porter is the present James Eggleston, this marriage preceeded his marriage to Ruth because Middletown records show James of Middletown married Lydia Wetmore of Middletown. |
