Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records: Guilford VR Vol 2, p. 34. "Deborah Hand, dau. John and Deborah born 2 April 1732." (Family History Library film 2920) Deborah Hand named as daughter of John and Deborah (Bishop) Hand in "Descendants of Joseph Hand," NEHGR Vol 55, p. 33, Family History Library film 1275 Item 3) Also in Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, FHL 974.67 G1 D2t, p. 597: "Deborah, dau. John Hand and Deborah (___) Hand b. 2 April 1732; mar. John Porter." HER GRANDFATHER'S PROBATE Her Grandfather Benjamin Hand's probate is in Guilford Probates, Vol. 4, 1739-1751, Family History Library film 4354, p. 211. Sept. 4, 1744. On page 212 is the will: . "My son John Hand his children Elizabeth Hand, Deborah Hand, Submit Hand and John Hand," received land. JOHN HAND Sr. PROBATE: 1. Deborah Hand named in her father's probate: Probates of Guilford, 1739-1750, Vol 4 p. 271, Feb. 4, 1745/6 (Deborah named as daughter of John Hand) (Family History Library film 4354.) 2. Deborah Porter named as sister of John Hand "the only son" of the elder John, Guilford Probate Vol 4 p. 692, May 2, 1751 (Family History Library film 4354.) "John Porter of Woodbury, husband to one of the daughters of John Hand, late of Guilford, deceased, exhibits...real estate of the deceased...to be distributed. John Hand's sisters Deborah Porter, Elizabeth Hand and Submit Hand are mentioned. Family History Library film 4354) JOHN HAND Jr. PROBATE Probate of John Hand Jr., Jan. 9, 1760, Guilford Probates Vol 8 pp. 102, 120, 197 (Family History Library film 4355) James Munger was named administrator in the probate of his brother-in-law John Hand Jr. His land was divided between "the two sisters of the deceased, Deborah Porter and Submit Munger." (His sister Elizabeth was dead by then.) On p. 197 dated January 20, 1760 Deborah Porter was given 4 1/2 acres at Woodbury plus "sundry moveables" from the estate of her brother John, totaling 59:5:6. DEATH: Ancestry.com gives her death date 1751, but there really is no record of it. Clearly, if she had a son in 1765 she didn't die before that. Because her husband remarried in 1774, obviously she died before then. That's all we know. WOODBURY: Some of her family came to Woodbury before Deborah. Her mother married a Woodbury man as a second marriage; her sister Elizabeth owned land in Woodbury and married there, and her father's cousin Stephen Hand was in Litchfield. Later Stephen was in Woodbury and Bethlehem for many years, as were his children, (He has land transactions in Bethlehem from 1756 to 1784.) LAND RECORDS: John Porter and Deborah Porter his wife of Woodbury in the county of Litchfield and colony of Connecticut in New England for the consideration of thirteen pounds lawfull money received to our full satisfaction of Peter Welton of Waterbury in Newhaven County and Colony aforesaid do give , grant bargain, sell, and confirm unto the said Peter Welton one certain Tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in Bethlehem in said Woodbury being in that tier of Lotts in part of fifth and sixth lotts butted and bounded as follows (viz) north by highway east on John Minors south on Samuell Church and said Weltons own land and west on John Minor or Capt Frisby containing four acres and an half it being part of the lott of land that belonged to Elizabeth Hand and since to John Hand late of Guilford deceased and lately set of by distribution to Deborah the wife of the said John Porter. June 21, 1760 (Woodbury Land Records, Vol. 13, p. 20, Family History Library film 6147, item 2) (Note, Peter Weldon, John Minor, Samuel Church and Jacob Frisby were all brothers-in-law of John Porter.) MARRIAGE Deborah married John Porter, the son of her mother's second husband, Nathaniel Porter. Her sister Elizabeth married Nathaniel's youngest son Thomas. John Porter was born 6 September 1728 at Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut. He was the son of Nathaniel Porter and his wife Joanna Smith. He died before 1793 probably in Bethlehem, Connecticut. DOCUMENTATION Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, "John Porter m. Deborah Hand." (Family History Library book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 213.) The great confusion surrounding this marriage is that her mother was also named Deborah (Bishop) Hand, wife of John Hand. When John died Deborah and her daughters Elizabeth and Deborah moved to Bethlehem, where she married John's father Nathaniel Porter, as his third wife. She moved her household into the Porter home, and in time her daughters married the Porter Brothers, Thomas and John. Thus, the Deborah Hand who married Nathaniel Porter was the mother and the Deborah Hand who married John Porter was the daughter. Also found in Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, (Family History Library film 3803, p. 32.) In the Talcott Genealogies the Hand family of Guilford is listed in detail. The marriage of Deborah to Nathaniel and her daughter Deborah to John Porter were noted. (Family History Library film 4352) PROBATE of John Hand, Deborah's father: At a court of probate held in Guilford May 3, 1751 John Porter of Woodbury, husband to one of the daughters of John Hand, late of Guilford, dec’d exhibited the d-ris-ron (distribution) of the real estate of the said dec’d which was mede? by the freeholders appointed by this court to divide the same which was appointed in court and recorded to the recorded distribution on the real estate of John Hand, dec’d. Land distribution between all children, Elizabeth, John and Submit Hand and Deborah Porter. Land bounds on Abraham Doude, East on Hammanost River, “the dividing line between Killingly and Guilford,” Benjamin Hand and land formerly belonging to the heirs of old aged Joseph Hand which he willed to his grand children, John Hand and Esther Hand.” Dated May 2, 1751. (Guilford Probates, Vol. 4, p. 692, FHL film 4354.) DEATH There is no death or burial record in Woodbury or Bethlehem for Deborah Porter. Her last child was born in 1764 and her husband remarried 23 June 1774 at Bethlehem, so she had obviously died after 1764 and before June 1774. |
