Ricker, Family History Library book 974.67 G1 D2t lists this family: John Bishop s/o John Bishop and Susanna (Goldham), was born 1655 and died 25 November 1731 . He married 1st3 July 1689 Elizabeth Hitchcock who died 14 March 1712. He married 2nd 18 Nov 1713 Mary. Children of John and Elizabeth are named. Deborah b. 19 February 1702. American Genealogist, New Haven, Connecticut, Vol 16 p. 183, Family History Library book 973.D25aga, citing Guilford Conn., Vital Records in Town Records Vol 1. transcribed by Donald Linus Jacobus. The Bishop family is identified: David s. John and Elezebeth b. 6 June 1697;Jonathan s. John & Elezebeth b. 8 Nov 1699;Deborah da. John & Elezebeth b. 19 Feb 1701/02;Nathaniel s. John & Elezebeth b. 6 May 1704. WOODBURY: She was in Woodbury soon after the death of her first husband John Hand in 1739. She is named in John's Probate on June 26, 1745 as being widow of John Hand and current wife of Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury. (Probates of Guilford, 1739-1750, pp. 257-258 and again p. 270, Jan 31, 1745/6 and p. 271, Feb. 4, 1745/6 (Family History Library film 4354.) David Bishop, mentioned in her husband John Hand's probate, is the brother of Deborah Bishop and son of John Bishop and Elizabeth Hitchcock. Incorrectly named Deborah Hurd in "History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut," (Family History Library book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669.) Named Deborah Hand in marriage record. (Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, Family History Library film 3803, p. 30.) John Hand (Benjamin (2), Joseph (1) of East Guilford, Married Deborah ______. After his death she married June 13, 1745, Nathaniel Porter of Bethlehem, Conn., but died in the same year." ("Genealogy of the John Porter Family", online NEHGS, Vol 55, p. 23.) JOHN HAND PROBATE: 1. Vol 3 p. 351 May 22, 1739 "Administration of the estate of John Hand granted to Deborah Hand, widow..." (Family History Library film 4353) 2. Vol 4 p. 257 June 26, 1745: Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury and Deborah his wife (Deborah being widow and relict of John Hand, late of Guilford...allowed for support of the younger children...court appoints Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury guardian to John Hand, minor son of John Hand of Guilford, deceased, by his wife Deborah, now wife of said Porter..." (Family History Library film 4354.) 3. Vol 4, p. 270 Jan. 31, 1746: "Nathaniel Porter in behalf of his wife Deborah" administers the estate of John Hand, late of Guilford (Family History Library film 4354) 4. Vol 4, p. 271 Feb 4, 1746: Distribution of estate of John Hand. Widow received 1/3 part, a total of 24:10:0. Children Elizabeth, Deborah and Submit also received 12:5:0 each. 5. Her brother David Bishop is named as guardian of John Jr. when her husband John died. DEATH: Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, Family History Library film 3803, p. 23. "Deborah, wife of Nathaniel Porter died September 16, 1750 at Bethlehem." Some histories claim she and Nathaniel had a son John born 10 Nov. 1745 in Woodbury, but that is extremely unlikely because both she and Nathaniel already had sons named John, both of whom (as far as we know) were still alive. The idea came from John's being administrator of his probate. We now know John was the son of Joanna rather than Deborah. NOTE: The Hurd-Hand connection in Woodbury For a century and a half various transcribers and genealogists studying Woodbury, Connecticut have confused the Hand family from Guilford with the Hurd family, one of the original families in Woodbury. In 1745 Deborah Hand married Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury and appeared in town just in time to confuse genealogists permanently. Deborah’s daughters Elizabeth and Deborah Hand who later married brothers Thomas and John Porter were unknown in Woodbury or Bethlehem before their mother’s marriage, so naturally when transcribers saw their names; they assumed them to be in the Hurd family. To complicate the debate, John Hurd of Woodbury had a daughter Elizabeth, born about the same time as Elizabeth the daughter of Deborah Hand. Until the origin of the problem is understood, the truth will remain a mystery. In 1745 Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury, twice a widower, met and married Mrs. Deborah Hand of Guilford who had lost her husband six years earlier. Probate records for John Hand, her first husband, indicate Nathaniel and Deborah were married and living in Woodbury at the distribution. Vital and church records at the time recorded the marriage correctly. It is obvious the two families were blended because two of Nathaniel’s sons (Thomas and John) soon married two of Deborah’s daughters (Elizabeth and Deborah.) In 1854, just over one hundred years later, William Cothren published his book History of Woodbury Connecticut from the First Indian Deed in 1659 to 1854. Before completing the book he transcribed early records of Woodbury and compiled genealogies of early residents. Having become familiar with the families in the early town, when he encountered the name Elizabeth Hand, quite clear in the original record now at the Woodbury Town Clerk’s Office, he transcribed “Elizabeth Hurd,” a name more common and predictable. ‘Thomas Porter married Elizabeth Hurd 25 Dec. 1752.” This is not the first incident of the surname “Hand” in Woodbury Vital Records, but when Nathaniel married Deborah seven years earlier she had clearly been noted to be “of Guilford.” Later when her daughter Deborah married John Porter the name Deborah Hand was familiar by then, and her name was transcribed correctly. Further scrutiny of the original record proves Elizabeth’s name was correctly written “Hand.” However, there was no Hand family in Woodbury at that time, and transcribers did their best to understand what they saw. That’s where the Hurd-Hand problem began. Cothren correctly recognized that Nathaniel Porter, father of Thomas had married Mrs. Deborah Hand June 13, 1745, but couldn’t believe the Elizabeth who married Thomas Porter was not the Elizabeth Hurd in town. In fact, there was an Elizabeth Hurd in Woodbury, born 21 July 1730, daughter of John Hurd and Elizabeth Hinman of Woodbury. (Elizabeth Hand was born exactly two years earlier on 1 July 1728 in Guilford.) The Hurds were one of the first families in town. Their original house still stands as the oldest town landmark. Woodbury Vital Records give her marriage to Ebenezer Leavenworth March 27, 1854/55. Cothren correctly transcribed her name on that marriage record Elizabeth Hurd, perhaps wondering why there were two marriage records for her. Yet there had never been a Hand family in town, and his logic in transcribing “Hurd” for “Hand” is understandable. That is precisely what happened when the book was published. Deborah Hand is listed both as the wife of John (Jan 14, 1751) and of Nathan (June 13, 1745.) Without knowledge of the Hand family, researchers couldn’t understand they were mother and daughter, but we know it was really two separate women. Thus, The History of Ancient Woodbury incorrectly perpetuated the confusion that Elizabeth Hand’s name was Hurd, even though vital and church records had it right. The problem was deepened forty years later when Henry P. Andrews researched this family before writing his book of Porter genealogy. His confusion also included Nathaniel Porter Sr. and Nathaniel Jr. who actually married Abigail Joselyn of Branford. “Nathaniel Porter, a “minister’ in Coventry, Conn, had a son Nathaniel who married Jan. 13, 1745 Deborah, daughter of John Hurd. She died-when he married April 16, 1747, Abigail Joselyn of Branford. Children of 1st wife: John Porter b. Nov. 10, 1745. Children of 2nd wife: Nathaniel b. Dec. 25, 1745, lived in Great Barrington; Simeon Porter b. 1757, David Porter b. 1758; Esther b. 1756; Joseph b. 1759 in Salisbury (moved to Frankfort Maine); Anna b. 1760; Lucy b. 1762; Abigail b. 1764; Mary b. 1765.” Confusing the two men named Nathaniel Porter who came to Litchfield County, Connecticut about the same time is a primary problem in identifying this family. It was necessary first to identify which Nathaniel Porter emigrated to Woodbury and became the father of the Woodbury clan of Porters. |

PROBATE of John Hand of Guilford (difficult to read)“Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury and Deborah his wife, (the said Deborah being late widow and relict of John Hand, late of Guilford, dec’d, administratrix of the estate of said Hand) exhibited an ---y of debt, deed, h--- of said estate on file, £38.14.2 and charges in ---inghing and repak-g of house. £20-0-0 is allowed for the support of the youngest child £30--for charges of administration above, show for pa--, and to church £12-7 and all which makes £101:1:2 to be a bals- form of inventory and the remainder of the char---estate of £91:17:8. (Vol. 4, p. 257, FHL 4354), Guilford, June 26, 1745 Nathaniel Porter in behalf of his wife Deborah, administratrix of the estate of John Hand, late of Guilford, moved for distribution of the personal estate of £91:17:8 to the widow and children. “Widow is now wife of Nathaniel Porter…” Distribution itemized to the children but only the eldest son John is named. Dated 14 January 1745/6. (Guilford Probates, Vol. 4, pp. 270-271) In the Talcott Genealogies (Family History Library film 4352) the Hand family of Guilford is listed in detail. The marriage of Deborah to Nathaniel and her daughter Deborah to John Porter were noted. RESEARCH: There have been many mistakes made about this marriage: 1. "The family came to Woodbury in 1735. History of Ancient Woodbury, Conn. 1659 to 1854, by William Cothren, 1854. Family History Library book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669. Deborah Hand is listed both as the wife of Nathan (June 20, 1745) and John (Jan 14, 1751). However, they were actually mother and daughter with the same name. The records didn't designate which was mother and which was daughter, but we know it was really two separate women. "The History of Ancient Woodbury incorrectly gives her name Hurd, probably because there were many Hurd families in town but no Hand family. (See attached document) 2. John Hand (Benjamin (2), Joseph (1) of East Guilford, Married Deborah ______. After his death she married June 13, 1745, Nathaniel Porter of Bethlehem, Conn., but died in the same year." ("Genealogy of the John Porter Family", online NEHGS, Vol 55, p. 23.) She did not die the same year. |
Note | The marriage is not recorded in Guilford Vital Records, but is in Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, Family History Library book 974.67 G1 D2t, p. 597. "John Hand, son of Benjamin and Mary (Wilcox) Hand married Deborah (____). She married /2 Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury, Conn." |
