Note | BIRTH: Land Records of Farmington, LR 1:3: "Johanah Smith the daughter of Joseph Smith was born the fifteenth day of October in the year of our Lord 1692." (Land Records include Vital Records.) This family found on "New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Ancestry.com database "Joanna Smith, daughter of Joseph Smith, bap. Oct. 16, 1692." FARMINGTON Farmington Deeds, Family History Library film 4218, item 1, Vol. 6, p. 220: Signed, sealed and delivered by Joanah Porter in ye pre---ce of John Hooker, Loger or Roger Hooker of Farmington March 8th day 1742, then said Joanah Porter wife of Nathaniel Porter came and personally acknowledged the foregoing instrument to be her free act and deed before me, John Hooker, Justin Page, Joanah Porter’s acknowledgement. Entered May ye 19th by John Hart. The family's inheritance land was sold and signatures of siblings followed: Elizabeth Cowles, Ruth Sedgwick, Susanah Gridley, Thankful Smith, Mercy Smith, Experience Smith, Isaac Cowles, William Porter, Joseph Woodford, Joseph Smith or Smita, Yg Garner Smith, Nathaniel Porter, Joseph Sedgwick, Ga---- Gridley, Lydia Woodford, Mary Portter. We know Joanna was still alive July 12, 1743 when she and Nathaniel signed a deed selling land inherited from her father Joseph Smith. (Farmington Deeds 6:410, Family History Library 4218, item 1.) WOODBURY Joanna Porter admitted to the Congregational Church Sept 25, 1737. "History of Ancient Woodbury," Family History Library 974.6 H2cw, p. 820. FAMILY Joanna Smith Porter had eight children ("Genealogy of The Cowles Family in America" Vol. I, compiled by Col. Calvin Duvall Cowles, U.S.A., retired, Historian of the Cowles Family Association, published by Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor, Co. New Haven, Conn. 1929, Family History Library film 476957 Item 2.) DEATH She must have died before 1746 when he remarried. There is a death recorded in Bethlehem of ---Porter, an adult on 20 August 1744, which almost certainly was Joanna, especially because Nathaniel remarried the next year. Since there was no other Porter family in Bethlehem, we can be almost certain it was Joanna. (Family History Library film 1522005 Item 1.) |
