Note | BIRTH: There is no record for her birth in Farmington. Since all her brothers and sisters have vital records to prove their birth, she has never been proved to be in the family. However, land records prove she is the daughter of Nathaniel and Joanna Porter: Nathaniel mentioned her in a land record on 20 April, 1748 as "my beloved daughter Joanna, wife of James Frisbie," settling the question forever. Woodbury Deeds, Vol. 8, p. 51 - (Land records, v. 8-9 1748-1755, FHL film 6152) "James and Joanna his wife of Branford quit claim to Peter Welton and Samuel Church land lying in Bethlehem, 2nd or 3rd tier, bounded by John Minor, Tousey or Attins, Perry's land and "east by land our Father Porter gave to Mother Porter containing 10 acres and a quarter, being the whole of what land we have in that place." 28 March 1754. (9:210, FHL film 6152.) She is left out of the family in "Some Descendants of Robert Porter with Female Lines, Farmington, Connecticut 1640," Compiled by Margaret Porter Miller, FHL book 929.273 P835m, p. 3. DATE OF BIRTH In every single list from church records to land records, where she and her sister Ruth are named, Joanna is named first. It is obvious she is the oldest child in the family. BRANFORD: Admitted to the church in 1749: Joanna Frisbie and Ruth Frisbie, entered in that order one after the other. Their husbands (brothers married Porter sisters) were on the same page, but unreadable on this film. (Branford Ct. First Congregational Church Records, Vol. 1, p. 18, FHL film 3713, item 3.) BETHLEHEM: "The names of persons once members of neighboring churches of which the church in Bethlehem was formed:" Nathaniel Porter and one female in 1740. Additional females in 1740: "Joanna Porter, Ruth Porter and Sarry Porter from Woodbury Church," (Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, FHL film 3803, Vol. 1, p. 2.) The appearance of her name first on every single list makes it almost certain she was the oldest child in Nathaniel's family. In Land Records Joanna appears with husband James Frisbie several times: Vol. 7, p. 150, (FHL film 6151.) James Frisbie and Joanna his wife of Branford sold John Minor of Woodbury 5 acres in Bethlehem Sept 28, 1745 Vol. 9, p. 136, (FHL film 6152) "James and Joanna Frisbie of Branford, husband and wife" sold for 105 pounds to Peter Welton of Waterbury and Samuel Church of Woodbury "as equal partners" land in Woodbury North Purchase bounded by John Minor, Daniel Perry, Thomas Porter. 3 Feb. 1753. Vol. 9:210, (FHL film 6152.) James and Joanna his wife of Branford quit claim to Peter Welton and Samuel Church land lying in Bethlehem, 2nd or 3rd tier, bounded by John Minor, Tousey or Attins, Perry's land and "east by land our Father Porter gave to Mother Porter." 28 March 1754 DEATH: She was dead by 1772 when James remarried. |

Note | Barbour Collection of Branford Vital Records: "James Frisbie of Branford mar. Joanna Porter of Woodbury 16 Jun 1743, by Philemon Robbins." Citing Branford Vital Records 3:165. Also in "Edward Frisbie of Branford and his Descendants," Vol 1, by Nora G. Frisbie, FHL book 929.273 F917fn, Vol. 1, p. 39-40. It was noted there there were no children, but that in the second edition of the book he had married Clamis Darin and there were children of both marriages. |
