BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 213. "Beulah Porter, dau. Thomas & Beaulah." Original Records at the Town Clerk’s Office, Connecticut, Births, Marriages and Deaths, Vol. 1 p. 42. Also in "History of Ancient Woodbury," Vol 3, FHL film 6181, item 3, p. 56. The same date recorded in the original record: "Woodbury Vital Records Index" FHL film 1491338, item 1, p. 79.) WYOMING MASSACRE: Beulah and other women originally from Litchfield CT escaped with the children when their city was burned in the ongoing struggle between PA and CT to retain control of the territory. (Correspondence with Nancy Smith and BCC): "Beulah Porter's story is my favorite--she hid in the hills during the Wyoming attack and saw the house burn before she and the other women began the trek to CT." Histories recount how the women and children escaped and hid in the wilderness for weeks without shelter or supplies. The reports of their suffering at last inspired the Pennsylvania government to allow them to return, especially because their husbands and fathers were away fighting in the Revolutionary War. However, after several weeks of similar treatment and deprivation, they again escaped into the wilderness and returned to Connecticut. 1790 CENSUS: Beulah Beeman is living with one male over 16 and one male under 16 at Harpersfield, Montgomery (later Delaware,) NY, in the western section called Kortright. Her husband is not there although he subsequently was given power of attorney for her father Thomas Porter, who could be the male over 16 in her household. Next door to her is Benlack Porter who is probably about 25 since there are three females in the household. I have no idea who he is. There is no other census for him in any form of his name. DEATH: Nancy Smith, descendant, wrote: "I have a pencil notation that Beulah Minor Porter died about 1786 but no source."
