Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, p. 197. (LR 2: 190) WOODBURY: John Minor named as one of the four original dissenters from Stratford. In 1672 they were granted liberty to erect a plantation at Pomperage, obviously the father of the present John Minor. (History of Ancient Woodbury Ct., FHL film 974.6, H2cw, p. 34-35.) John Minor of Woodbury gives to "my dear and only son John Minor Jun. of Woodbury land in Bethlehem, part of the 2d lot in the 4th tier...and the north half of my present dwelling house." 21 March 1759, Woodbury Deeds, Vol. 12, p. 130, FHL 6154.) FAMILY: Named as father of Beulah Miner in "History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut," (F.H.L. book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669.) His probate names his four living children. Since there was another John Minor in Woodbury having children and christening them at the same time, and no distinction was made between the two Johns, his probate is the only way to determine which children belong to him. CHESHIRE: In Cheshire church records only once: "Baptized 2 children of John Minor January, 1740/1." (Congregational Church Records of Cheshire, CT, p. 52, FHL film 3998, p. 58.) Probably Beulah and John. John and Elizabeth Minor admitted from Cheshire to the Congregational Church of Bethlehem in 1744. (Bethlehem Ct. Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, FHL film 3803, item 1.) There is no information to indicate which John and Elizabeth Minor this was. A search of the Cheshire Church Records (FHL film 3998,) showed no Minor surname whatever. If they were in Cheshire, they weren't recorded in Congregational Church records. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH: John Minor was dismissed for not coming to church. He reported he thought the church had departed from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. "Church discipline is the cause," he said. "I am nearest a Congregationalist. I wish the church was so too." April 18, 1751 he was dismissed. Congregational Church Records of Woodbury, (FHL film 3803, item 1, pp. 46-50.) WYOMING COUNTY PA The Susquehannah Company grants land to the following (on the list are John Minor, Thomas Porter (his son-in-law) and Samuel Church (his neighbor and brother-in-law to Thomas Porter.) ("The Susquehannah Company Papers, Vol 1, Ed. by Julian P. Boyd, pp. 106, 110, FHL book 974.8 H2su) That land, along the Susquehannah River in what is now Pennsylvania, had been purchased and recorded May 29, 1754. Three of the Woodbury men on the original list were John Minor with a whole share, Thomas Porter with a half share, and Samuel Church with a half share. (The Susquehannah Papers, Vol. 1, pp. 171-172. PROBATE: His will is dated 6 April, 1761; John Minor Jr. executor; to beloved wife Elizabeth my dwelling house and eleven acres of land which I purchased of Joseph Darrin (reserving the barn and mill) to be at her absolute dispose forever. I also give and devise unto her the li-- of one third part of my real estate; to son John Minor III one third part of my estate real and personal, and I moreover give and devise unto him the said John Minor my dower viz Elizabeth’s thirds of real estate at her decease, daughters Eunice Avered, Elizabeth Waugh, Beulah Porter named. (Woodbury Probates, Vol 6, p. 102, FHL film 6173) Land inventory: 1. Half right in Susquehanna 2. 40 acres of land lying next to Lieut Avered in Bethlehem at 2:15 per acre. 3. 20 acres of land bounded west and south on Peter Welton and the heirs of Samuel Church, North on highway, South on Co-ter land. 4. 20 acres and a half of land in the 4th lott in 3rd Tier of lotts near the northwest corner of said lott. ORDINANCES: Endowments were done for this family in 1892-5. They were noted to be from Stratford, Fairfield, CT. With no vital records available they didn't know. However, there is no baptism recorded for any family member. All ordinances should be finished before sealings are performed. |

Note | Ancestral File states they were married 18 Nov. 1731 in Woodbury, also repeated in various family histories. However, it was almost certainly before 1730 because Justice was born then. A search of records in both Stratford, Fairfield and in Woodbury have yielded no proof of marriage. |
