Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 213. "Thomas Porter, son of Thomas and Beulah." Original Records at the Town Clerk’s Office, Connecticut, Births, Marriages and Deaths, Vol. 1 p. 42. The same date recorded in the original record: "Woodbury Index to Vital Records," FHL film 1491338, item 1, p. 86.) Now found in "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F746-XH6 : 11 February 2018), Thomas Porter, 30 Nov 1761; citing ; FHL microfilm unknown. BETHLEHEM CT: In his Revolutionary War Pension application he stated he enlisted in Bethlehem. However, two years earlier he had enlisted in Wyoming County, PA, then a part of Conn. Obviously the family lived for a time in Wyoming County and at least Thomas Jr. returned to Bethlehem. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: 1. In 1778 Thomas served a short time as a Volunteer at Wyoming, Pennsylvania under Capt. Jenkins. They went in pursuit of savages who had massacred the Harden brothers. The officer was Butler. (Pension) 2. He served in a company of Connecticut Militia under Captain Chapman, Col. Beebe's Regiment" for 9 months. (Revolutionary War Pension Application, #2 17640, FHL film 971,955, p. 430) At the time of service, he was living "in the Bethlehem Society near Woodbury, Connecticut." After joining in Bethlehem they marched to Horne Neck. Stationed there until dismissed Jan. 1, 1781. He remembered in his pension application Colonel Beebe, Captains Porter, Umstead, and Bradley. The date written was Apr. 1780 to Jan. 1781. Thomas filed a pension claim in Cotton, Switzerland County, Indiana on August 21, 1832 for which he was later granted a pension. On the date of application, June 7, 1832, he was 70 years old. He stated he lived 5 or 6 years in New York state, then in Kentucky 10 years, (probably what later became southern Ohio), Ohio 20 years, and Indiana 13 years. He was married to either Sarah Price or Beulah Price (b. circa 1763) and they had three known sons; John (b. 1805, Hamilton County, Ohio), James (1808, Ohio-1877), and Moses (1810, Ohio-1899, Jefferson County, Indiana). Thomas stated that he lived in Kentucky for ten years (difficult to read) and he lived in Ohio for about twenty years before moving to Indiana, but the area where he lived was the border, and he may actually have been in approximately the same place but the boundaries changed. There were two other Porters listed on the rolls for the 4th Connecticut Regiment. Nathanial Porter served from December 7, 1780 to November 13, 1782 in the 7th Company commanded by Captain David Star. Colonel Zebulon Butler was the Regimental commander. Eldad Porter from Waterbury served from April 1, 1780 to December 31, 1780. WESTMORELAND, PENN. In 1778, Thomas Jr. served a short time as a Volunteer at Wyoming, Pennsylvania under Capt. Jenkins. He must have moved back to Woodbury when he returned because he then served in a company of Connecticut Militia under Captain Chapman, Col. Beebe's Regiment, for nine months. Revolutionary War Pension Application, #2 17640, p. 430. It was noted at the time of service, he was living “in the Bethlehem Society near Woodbury, Connecticut.” In 1783 he bought land in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and was called "Thomas Porter of Westmoreland on the deed. (Deeds of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania 1:98. ) In 1789 he sold the land in Wilkes-Barre, and was known as "Thomas Porter of Bethlehem, Litchfield, CT."(Deeds of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania 1:127.) From correspondence with Nancy Smith: "Thomas and all his 4 sons saw service in the Revolutionary War. Justice died in the war. The other 3 sons have pension applications. Thomas Jr was in Switzerland Co, IN in 1832. His account details the "pursuit of the savages who had massacred two white men" at Wyoming. 'We killed two Indians, one of them while swimming in the Susquehanna river.'" 1790 CENSUS: Thomas Porter in Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, p. 394 (Census Place: Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut; Roll: M637_1; Image: 0349). In the household were three females, one male above 16 and one under 16. Neighbors are Samuel Blakesley, Sponsor Gangred, Ebenezer Plumbley and Samuel Olcott. 1800 CENSUS: There are two of that name in Waterbury, none in Woodbury, Ohio or Tn.
