Note | BIRTH Barbour Collection of Guilford Vital Records, Vol. 2, p. 20, "Elizabeth daughter of John and Deborah Hand born 1 June 1728." Family History Library book 974.6 V2wL v. 3 Elizabeth Hand, daughter of John and Deborah Hand recorded in Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, Family History Library book 974.67 G1 D2t, p. 597. In "Genealogy of the John Porter Family", online NEHGS Register, Vol 55, p. 23. In this record and others she is known as Elizabeth Hurd, instead of Hand. Land Records cleared up the mystery because she clearly was recorded as Elizabeth Hand, not Hurd. (Family History Library film 1275 Item 3) WOODBURY LAND RECORDS: Nov. 22, 1752, John and Deborah Porter of Woodbury sold land to Elizabeth Hand (they are sisters) of Woodbury for 350 pounds in the "North Purchase of Woodbury." It is lands, house and barns which "Wee, the said John and Deborah Porter purchased of Nathaniel Porter Jun." (Woodbury Land Records, Vol 10 p. 130, Family History Library film 6147, item 1.) April 19, 1756: Thomas Porter of Woodbury sold land in Bethlehem. It is a piece of land John and Deborah Porter sold to Elizabeth Hand, late wife of Thomas Porter." (Woodbury Land Records, Vol 10, p. 138, Family History Library film 6153) John Porter and Deborah Porter his wife of Woodbury I the county of Litchfield and colony of Connecticut in New England for the consideration of thirteen pounds lawfull money received to our full satisfaction of Peter Welton of Waterbury in New Haven County and Colony aforesaid do give , grant bargain, sell, and confirm unto the said Peter Welton one certain Tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in Bethlehem in said Woodbury being in that tier of Lotts in part of fifth and sixth lotts butted and bounded as follows (viz) north by highway east o John Minors south on Samuell Church and said Weltons own land and west on John Minor or Capt Frisby containing four acres and an half it being part of the lott of land that belonged to Elizabeth Hand and since to John Hand late of Guilford deceased and lately set of by distribution to Deborah the wife of the said John Porter. June 21, 1760 (Woodbury Land Records, Vol. 13, p. 20, Family History Library film 6147, item 2) HER GRANDFATHER'S PROBATE: Benjamin Hand probate is in Guilford Probates, Vol. 4, 1739-1751, FHL 4354, p. 211. Sept. 4, 1744, p. 212 is the will: "My son John Hand his children Elizabeth Hand, Deborah Hand, Submit Hand and John Hand," received land. DEATH: IGI JOHN HAND Sr. PROBATE: Named in her father's probate: Probates of Guilford, 1739-1750, p. 271, Feb. 4, 1745/6 (Elizabeth named as daughter of John Hand); and p. 692, May 2, 1751 as sister of John Hand "the only son" of the elder John, (FHL film 4354.) JOHN HAND Jr. PROBATE: Probate of John Hand Jr., Jan. 9, 1760, Vol 8 pp. 102, 120, 197 Guilford Probates (FHL film 4355) James Munger was named administrator in the probate of his brother-in-law John Hand Jr. Because his land was divided between "the two sisters of the deceased, Deborah Porter and Submit Munger," we know John was not married and Elizabeth had died before January, 1759. MARRIAGE Woodbury Vital Records, Original records, Marriages 1741-1799, Family History Library film 1491,338, item 2, p. 2. Also found in Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, "Elizabeth Hand m. Benjamin Peet, Nov. 3, 1756." (Vol 1, p. 2) I have deleted this because the children of this marriage indicate the wife was Elizabeth Hendee (see research note below). The original handwritten record now in Woodbury has been searched, and the surname is clearly written Hand. Copy in possession of Phineas Wolcott Cook Organization and Bryson C. Cook. DEATH October 9, 1753 given both in church records and in her probate. Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, Vol. 1., p. 23: "Elizabeth wife of Thomas Porter died October 9, 1753." (Family History Library film 3803, item 1, p. 23.) Because she died 20 days after her infant died, it seems likely that Elizabeth may have died as a result of complications at the birth. Original Records at the Town Clerk’s Office, Connecticut Births, Marriages and Deaths, Vol. 1 p. 96 gives the death date of Elizabeth wife of Thomas Porter October 10, 1753. Found in Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, Family History Library book 974.6 V2wl, Vol 53, p. 213. "Elizabeth Porter died October 10, 1753." Ancestry.com gives her death date 1751, which is incorrect because the submitter assumed she still either lived in Guilford or married Benjamin Peet. RESEARCH NOTE: While Vital Records show Benjamin Peet married Elizabeth Hand, several submissions in IGI list Benjamin Peet's wife as Elizabeth Hendee, the only one of which was born in Windham, Connecticut in 1734. Ancestral File lists Elizabeth Hand as the husband of Benjamin Peet, but that is incorrect. Benjamin Peet married Elizabeth Hendee Oct. 26, 1756 in Woodbury. (Bethlehem Ct. Congregational Church Records, Family History Library film 3803, item 1, p. 28.) The children may be the clue: Benjamin Peet married Elizabeth Hendee who was the daughter of Joshua Hendee and Elizabeth Wheelock. Since Benjamin and Elizabeth Peet named one of their sons Wheelock, it seems certain Elizabeth Hendee is Benjamin's Peet's wife. It's confusing because Elizabeth Hand was in Woodbury in 1750 near Benjamin, and Elizabeth Hendee appears to be in Windham. DEATH: Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, Family History Library book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 213. "Elizabeth wife of Thomas Porter." Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, (Family History Library film 3803, p. 23) "Elizabeth wife of Thomas Porter died October 9, 1753." Woodbury Deaths, 1760-1765, Family History Library film 1491338, item 1, p. 288. "Elizabeth Porter died October 10, 1753." Her death is record in her probate: (Woodbury Probate 3:168) "Elizabeth wife of Thomas Porter died October 9, 1753." (Family History Library film 1029508) PROBATE: "Thomas Porter of Bethlehem in Woodbury" brought a will made by Elizabeth Porter "the late wife of the above Thomas Porter, who deceased Oct. 9 1753..." She died without issue. (Woodbury Probate Records, Vol. 3 p. 168 and 76 Supplement, Family History Library film 6172.) ORDINANCES: Family History Library film 457292. Sealed to John Wilcox Hand and Deborah Hand. Endowment date was 22 Oct. in Family History Library film 447950, ref. 14269, p. 052. Sealing to parents repeated 19 Nov. 1976 in the Idaho Falls Temple from extracted records. Father listed was John Hand, mother Deborah. ( Family History Library film 2920, source, 7450334. NOTE: Named specifically Elizabeth Hand in two different Woodbury land records (Vol 10, p. 138, Family History Library film 6153 and Vol 9, p. 275, Family History Library film 6152.) Also in her Probate record. Incorrectly named Elizabeth Hurd in "History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut," and in Vital Records. (Family History Library book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669.) |

Note | Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, Family History Library book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 213. "Elizabeth Hurd m. Thomas Porter Dec. 25, 1752 (1:1) Marriage 25 December 1752 recorded in the original record: "Woodbury Vital Records Index," FHL film 1491338, item 1, p. 180.) Thomas Porter married "Elizabeth Hard." In "The History of Ancient Woodbury, Conn. 1659 to 1854," by William Cothren, 1854. (Family History Library book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669,) and in Vol 3 ("History of Ancient Woodbury," Vol 3, FHL film 6181, item 3, Woodbury Marriages.) her name is listed Elizabeth Hurd. We know it is Hand from land records. The best evidence is in land records: Thomas Porter of Woodbury sold land in Bethlehem to Peter Welton of Waterbury. One acre is a piece of land John and Deborah Porter sold to Elizabeth Hand, “late wife of Thomas Porter.” (Woodbury Land records, Vol. 10, p. 138 - Family History Library film 6153) |
