BIRTH: Farmington Vital Records, LR 2 p. 46, Barbour Collection of Vital Records, FHL book 974.6 V2w1, Vol 12, p. 313. "Nathaniel son of Nathaniel Porter." BETHLEHEM: Shortly after his marriage Nathaniel Porter Jun. and Abigail were listed among the "persons who have owned their baptisimal covenants," dated May 1, 1748. (Bethlehem Ct. Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, FHL film 3803, item 1.) He lived in Bethlehem until about 1751 because his third child was born in Salisbury in 1752. SALISBURY: John Tozer of Salisbury, New Haven, Connecticut, for £140 sold Nathaniel Porter Jun. of Woodbury, Fairfield, Connecticut, land in Salisbury. It is 32 acres. Bounds Joseph Lee that was Thomas Bailey’s land, Stiles Grant and Cooledge Grant, Daniel and Elias Edwards, Eleazer Whittlesey, Benjamin White. 20 October 1749 (Vol. 3:155 (FHL 5512, item 2) He sold land 9 December 1751(3:156); bought land 3 April 1755 (3:323), 16 June 1755 (3:414) and 1 April 1755 (3:415). He sold out to his son Simeon 13 August 1776 (5:149, FHL 5513) "being all the land that I own where I now live in said Salisbury, with dwelling house, orchard and improvements on said land.” Three months earlier he had bought land in Great Barrington. "The church records also show that Nathaniel Porter and his wife Abigail became members of the (Salisbury) church by deposit of letters from the church in Coventry..." ("Porter Family Record: Some Twigs from a Branch.." NEGHS CS/71 P839, p. 5.) The Coventry theory was copied many times in other records. See "Miscellaneous and Family Notes from the Lancaster County Historical Soc., PA" (FHL 20370, item 3, p. 4...JSP: The Coventry theory is not true; see below because the record clearly records his admission with no place of origin.) Members admitted (undated alphabetical list, but the earliest members): "Nathaniel Porter; the wife of said Porter." Under this is the entry for the wife of Joshua Porter, also named Abigail Porter who was admitted by letter from Coventry. Clearly their names are together because the whole list was alphabetized, but for 200 years researchers have claimed Nathaniel and wife were also from Coventry, thus by deduction, of the Porter-Buell family of Lebanon, CT. However, there is nothing written next to their names indicating where they came from. Nathaniel and his wife are thus accounted for in the record, and neither of them were from Coventry. (Salisbury Church Records, FHL film 5510, item 1, unnumbered pages, but early in the record; also on FHL film 234,579, citing p. 12 in the original.) Tax lists of Salisbury: Nathaniel Porter 1756-1761 (Salisbury Church Records, 1740-1891, FHL film 5510, item 5, unnumbered pages. Alphabetical list (not labeled, but obviously families in the church) "Nathaniel Porter viz - Joanna, Joseph: 61: David: 63: & Lucy: 67:" (Their years of birth in the town.) Salisbury (Church Records, 1740-1891, FHL film 5510, item 1, p. 133.) The town records show that 7 of the 9 children were born in Salisbury. (Salisbury Town Clerk: Record of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Town Meetings, 1740-1848, FHL film 1509740 item 1, p. 184. ) GREAT BARRINGTON, MA: "They (Nathaniel II) lived at Woodbury until 1750-52 when they removed to Salisbury. In 1771 they moved with their younger children to Great Barrington, Mass." ("Some Descendants of Robert Porter, Farmington Connecticut 1640," compiled by Margaret Porter Miller, Gateway Press, 1986. F.H.L. book 929.273, P835m, p. 6) He bought land in Great Barrington Ma June 9, 1791. (actually in 1776-JSP) ("Porter Family Record: Some Twigs from a Branch," NEGHS CS/71/P839.) CS71/P839 1896, Peter Paul Book Co., Buffalo.) He may be the Nathaniel Porter found on a ledger book kept by John E. Van Alen: "Nathaniel Porter, June 13, 1770 to Sept. 26, 1770." (Pittsfield Church and other Records, FHL 234,571, p. 235.) Land Records of Berkshire Co., Middle District Nathaniel Porter is from Salisbury, CT when he first bought 92 acres in Gt Barrington 24 May 1776. Samuel Wright of Stockbridge in Berkshire Co., MA for £100 paid by "Nathaniel Porter of Salisbury in Litchfield County, CT" land lying in upper Housatonic, formerly so-called now by Great Barrington, being in the east division of land, east of the Homamente or Nonnaminte Mountains, it being part of the Lot #34, being the west end of said lot-92 acres; likewise the one equal half of Lot #35, containing in the whole about 200 acres. (Berkshire Deeds 14:126 FHL 872082) The only other deed for him states he is from Great Barrington. "Nathaniel Porter of Great Barrington" for £300 paid “by my son Simeon Porter of Salisbury, in Litchfield, CT,” sold one-half of his farm. His son Simeon is named in that deed, as well as daughters Esther and Joanna as witnesses: 28 August 1777 (22:12 (FHL 872086) Obviously he sold all his land to his son Simeon at that time. That accounts for the fact that there is no probate for him. The other land records for that name are for Nathaniel’s son Nathaniel who is a Joiner and lives in Hudson, NY, but owned land in Pittsfield. I’m certain they are not the same. (JSP 9-2008) Land Records in Berkshire Co., Southern District: Nathaniel Porter of Gt. Barrington, yeoman, bought land in Great Barrington, part of Lot #35, 9 June 1791, (Vol 29, p. 346, FHL film 879,131) The same day he mortgaged that piece of land (Vol. 29:592), again known as Nathaniel Porter, yeoman. Simeon Porter assumed the obligation for that debt, which it is noted on the same page, was paid June 13, 1794. On 9 December 1791, Nathaniel Porter of Great Barrington, yeoman, sold land in Gt. Barrington, part of Lot #32 "in the East Division of long lots in the Upper Housatonic property." Witnesses are Simeon Porter, Lucy Porter, Janna Porter and Henry W. Dwight. (Vol. 32: 352, FHL 879,132) "The First Baptist Society in Great Barrington," The following incorporated into the society: Nathaniel Porter, 1802. "Laws of the Commonwealth of Mass," Vol., IV, printed by Young and Minns, included in the unnumbered pages of the Congregational Church Records of Great Barrington, (FHL 250,316, item 2.) STOCKBRIDGE: Nathaniel was admitted into the Congregational Church at Stockbridge Jan. 10, 1779 "Mr. Porter;" and his wife July 7, 1782: "Mrs. Porter and her daughter-in-law, the wife of Nathaniel Porter..." (Congregational Church Records of Stockbridge, MA Admissions, (FHL 234,575, item 3, p. 9.) It is known they lived in Great Barrington. Possibly they went to church in Stockbridge, or lived there for a time because both their sons Simeon and Nathaniel lived there from 1778-1784. The two towns are only a few miles apart. 1790 CENSUS: Great Barrington, Berkshire, Mass. Nathaniel and his son Simeon are next to each other on the census. Since Simeon had bought his father's land in 1777, probably he and his father Nathaniel lived on the same land but in separate houses. Nathaniel's household includes 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Simeon's household includes 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16 and 4 females. (Roll: M637_4; Image: 0283, as seen on Ancestry.com) Because of his deed dated 9 December 1791 (Vol. 32: 352, FHL 879,132) showing Nathaniel born 1724 was still alive, we know it was he on this census. 1800 CENSUS: Nathaniel Porter has 2 males, one is 16-26 and one is over 45. Two females 26-45. Abigail is apparently dead. He is the only Nathaniel Porter in Berkshire County, Mass. Although no death record has been found for Nathaniel II, this is either because it is known he was in Berkshire County at that time and there is no other Nathaniel Porter listed in Berkshire. (Roll: 13; Page: 110; Image: 91, Ancestry.com) DEATH: The Congregational Church, Church records, 1743-1945, [FHL 250,316, item 2] including The First Baptist Society in Great Barrington, unnumbered pages. The following incorporated into the society: Nathaniel Porter, 1802. Since there is no death or probate record for him, it is assumed he died some time after 1802 but before the 1810 Census. It is known he died in Great Barrington because among the papers in his son Simeon’s Revolutionary War Pension Application is an affidavit signed by Oliver Partridge of Great Barrington. He said “I do recollect that William Patterson and Nathaniel Porter with their families came and settled about three miles from us on new land and near each other, I think in 1775 and 1776…That said Doctor Youngself (was) their physician several years and until their deaths…” (See Revolutionary War Pension W17468, NA Roll 1955, Simeon Porter.)

RESEARCH NOTE: 1. There are a Simeon, Nathan, and David Porter of Waterbury who are found in Berkshire Land Records. this family centered itself in southern Berkshire County, principally Sandisfield. In early land records they are identified by the town of Waterbury. They never came as far north as Great Barrington. 2. WINDSOR PORTER FAMILY: For generations it has been believed this Nathaniel is the brother of Joshua Porter, MD, born in Lebanon, Windsor, CT, who became famous in the Revolutionary War, was a physician in Salisbury, and whose iron works in Salisbury made him rich. Land records of Berkshire County show he came to Sheffield where he likely established the iron works there. Later he moved to Great Barrington and was there from 1795 ("Joshua Porter of Sheffield") until about 1810 ("Joshua Porter of Great Barrington, physician.") He and his wife Thankful appear in Berkshire land records, southern district many times, showing they unquestionably were there. Because of that, descendants of Nathaniel of Great Barrington for 200 years have believed they were descendants of Joshua's brother Nathaniel who was born in Lebanon, CT. The coincidence is striking. They were both in Salisbury, Ct. and both moved to Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA, but were not related. Joshua's brother Nathaniel Jr. and the present Nathaniel Jr. were born within six months of each other, but on opposite ends of Connecticut. Nathaniel the brother of Joshua was never in Great Barrington. Letters in the NEHGS from Joseph Porter, descendant of Nathaniel who believed himself the descendant of Nathaniel of Lebanon prove how the incorrect connection was made. Andrews, who wrote the book "John Porter of Windsor" therefore included the family of Nathaniel Porter Jr. of Salisbury and Great Barrington in the book as children of Nathaniel Porter Jr. of Lebanon. It has been proven conclusively that is not true. (Janet Porter, Oct, 2008)

Note

Barbour Collection of Woodbury Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL Vol. 50, p. 213. "Nathaniel Porter of Woodbury married Abigail Joselyn of Branford." Several sources erroneously record this as a second marriage, the first being to Deborah Hurd. However, Deborah Hand, not Hurd, was the wife of his father Nathaniel, and was assigned by "The History of Woodbury, Conn" (William Cothren, 1854. F.H.L. book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669) to Nathaniel Jr. because the death date of his mother, Joanna Porter, was not known. It is now known this marriage of Nathaniel Jr. to Abigail Joslin was the first and only marriage.
