Note | BIRTH "Elizebeth Gilburd, baptized 8 Sep. 1700, Greenfield Hill Church Records, New England Historic Genealogic Register, 1915, Vol LXIX, p. 40, ( Family History Library book 974 B2ne Vol 69.) BIRTHPLACE "Elizabeth Gilbert, b. abt 1700, Fairfield, Fairfield, CT, daughter of Obediah Gilbert and Abigail Cabell. She married first, Nathaniel Gray, Dec., 4, 1728, Fairfield, Fairfild, CT and had; Elizabeth Gray who married, Thomas Perry." (New England Historic Genealogical Register , vol. 69, p. 40., Research by Bryson Cook.) It is known that Nathaniel's wife Deborah Bishop Hand died in 1751. He died in 1758, leaving a wife and a child, so we know he remarried after Deborah died. In Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, (Family History Library film 1803, item 1, p. 8) "Elizabeth the wife of Nathaniel Porter from Reading" was among the "members received upon recommendation" in 1755. Since there is no such place as Reading, it is assumed they meant Redding, Fairfield, CT. (Bryson Cook note: Reading is Redding is next to Danvers in Fairfield the clerk spelled it wrong.) REDDING/FAIRFIELD, CT Land Records of Fairfield, CT: John Gray and Elizabeth Gray of the parish of Reading in the town and county of Fairfield, CT, "being executors of the last will and testament of Nathaniel Gray of said parish, dec'd, by virtue of an act of said general assembly held at Hartford on May of 1744, and for the consideration of 50-16-00 pounds do sell unto Ebenez/r Hull...18 acres, 140 rods in Fairfield twp..." December 28, 1744, (Family History Library film 4248, Item 3, Vol 8, p. 41.) "Elizabeth Gray widow and relict of Nath'l Gray, late of Reading in said county of Fairfield "sold to James Bradley of Reading ten acres of land in Reading in said township of Fairfield." Feb. 18, 1746/47, ( History Library film 4248, item 3, 8:414.) NATHANIEL PORTER PROBATE John Porter, son of Nathaniel, "late of Woodbury," was appointed Administrator Sept 11, 1758. It was noted that Mrs. Porter, widow, and Thomas Petty of Danbury appeared at the court "and exhibited the last will and testament of said deceased..(Elizabeth was first the widow of Nathaniel Gray. In her first husband’s probate, “Thomas Parry of Danbury" was named as the husband of her daughter. He apparently came to Woodbury to defend his mother-in-law’s property rights.) "...and observing that there is nothing in said will given to his wife or now widow, save only during life, which is wholly inconsistent with law, this court therefore determine said will be set aside and be void. Whereupon this court proceeded to appoint an administrator on the above estate; and appoint John Porter, son of the above deceased, administrator therein, and have the date above granted to him, said John Porter letter of administration." On p. 100 it was ordered that several inventoried household items listed be returned to the widow and removed from the inventory. They had been received by Nathaniel Porter Jan. 29, 1752 (assumed to be the marriage date of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Gilbert) Gray. Probated May 6, 1760. (Woodbury Probate Records, Vol. 4 p. 52, 100, Family History Library film 6172.) DEATH "Elizabeth Porter died Oct. 9, 1793." (Bethlehem CT Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, History Library film 3803, item 1, p. 23.) She is the only known Elizabeth Porter in Bethlehem at that time. ORDINANCES: History Library film 0884913, batch 8230501, sheet 72. |

Note | Marriage date is assumed to be 29 January 1752. See below: NATHANIEL PORTER PROBATE John Porter, son of Nathaniel, "late of Woodbury," was appointed Administrator Sept 11, 1758. It was noted that Mrs. Porter, widow, and Thomas Perry of Danbury (son-in-law and heir of Elizabeth Porter of Woodbury)appeared at the court "and exhibited the last will and testament of said deceased..and observing that there is nothing in said will given to his wife or now widow, save only during life, which is wholly inconsistent with law, this court therefore determine said will be set aside and be void. Whereupon this court proceeded to appoint an administrator on the above estate; and appoint John Porter, son of the above deceased, administrator therein, and have the date above granted to him, said John Porter letter of administration." (Woodbury Probate Records, Vol. 4 p. 52, 100 and 148, Family History Library film 6172. Nathaniel Porter probate. On p. 100 it was ordered that several inventoried household items listed be returned to the widow and removed from the inventory. They had been received by Nathaniel Porter Jan. 29, 1752. Probated May 6, 1760. (Woodbury Probate Records, Vol. 4 p. 52, 100 and 148 (reference to Nathaniel Porter not found on or near this page), Family History Library film 6172.) Because the court believed he received her property on Jan. 29, 1752 that would likely be the day they married. It is known Elizabeth Gilbert, widow of Nathaniel Gray was the fourth wife of Nathaniel Porter because of Gray's probate: "We Thomas Perry and Elizabeth his wife both of Danbury...in consideration of the love, duty, affection and regard which we have for our honored mother Elizabeth Porter of said Danbury...all that part of our late honored father, Nathaniel Gray's estate as was set out." Note Gray's Probate refers to Elizabeth as "Elizabeth Porter." (New England Historic Genealogical Register; Vol. 115, p. 279, 280, 281; 1961) |
Note | Nathaniel Gray and Elizabeth Gilbert were married 4 December 1728 at Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut. (New England Historic and Genealogical Register, Vol. 115, p. 279, 280, 281; 1961) SEALING: FHL film 456799. Noted to have married Elizabeth Gilbert. |
