BIRTH: Salisbury Town Clerk: Record of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Town Meetings, 1740-1848, FHL film 1509740 item 1, p. 184. Also recorded Salisbury Vital Records, Barbour Collection, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, Vol 37, p. 243. "Nathaniell, son Nathaniell & Abigail Porter." Extracted birth record, Salisbury Vital Records. REVOLUTIONARY WAR: 1. Nathaniel and Joseph Porter enlisted at Pittsfield ("History of Berkshire County, MA," FHL book 974.41 H2hb, p. 203.) List of Capt. Noble's minute-men who marched to Cambridge on the Lexington alarm : - Term of service, nine days; entered service April 22, 1775. Captain, David Noble of Pittsfield. First Lieut., Joseph Welch of Richmond. Second Lieut., Josiah Wright of Pittsfield. Sergeants, Jeremiah Miller, Richmond; Joseph More, Pittsfield; Ambrose Hall, Richmond; Nathaniel Porter, Pittsfield. (The History of Pittsfield (Berkshire County), Massachusetts: From the Year 1734 to the Year 1800, p. 477. By Joseph Edward Adams Smith Published by Lee and Shepard, 1869 Original from Harvard University Digitized Aug 31, 2006 and found on http://books.google.com/books?id=vz1qlW59XT4C&pg=PA477&dq=%22Nathaniel+Porter%22Lebanon+CT&lr= STOCKBRIDGE: Nathaniel's wife was admitted into the Congregational Church at Stockbridge July 7, 1782: "Mrs. Porter and her daughter-in-law, the wife of Nathaniel Porter..." (Congregational Church Records of Stockbridge, MA, Admissions, p. 9 (FHL 234,575, item 3, p. 9.) His children were born in Stockbridge (Congregational Church records) in 1782 and 1784. However, he does not appear in the 1790 Census in Berkshire County, and apparently never returned to Stockbridge. Heads of families in 1819 listed in film 234,575, p. 88-92 were from all religions--228 families in Stockbridge. No Porter family. PITTSFIELD: Nathaniel Porter of Pittsfield, joiner and Ambrose Collins, Joiner, Mortgaged land in Pittsfield 7 Nov. 1803 with the promise to pay Aaron Cooley $100 in one year with interest. (Berkshire deeds 41:373, FHL 872097) This no doubt was the younger Nathaniel. Nathaniel Sr. would have been 79 years old in 1803, and was known on land records as "yeoman." The next year Porter quit-claimed and sold to Collins the same land, dated 17 March, 1804 (Berkshire deeds 42:120, FHL 872098). It is the last record for Nathaniel Porter in Berkshire County, MA. OCCUPATION: He and his brother Simeon were joiners (Deeds 41:373.) A joiner is a carpenter for interior woodwork: doors, mouldings, stairs, etc. It was mentioned on land records both in Berkshire, MA and Hudson, NY. 1790 CENSUS: There is one at Half Moon, Albany, NY about 50 miles north of Hudson. Two males over 16, 5 males under 16, 2 females. Less likely is the one in Otsego, Montgomery, New York. the household is 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 4 females. Elijah Porter lives next door. 1800 CENSUS: Nathaniel Porter Hudson, Columbia, NY where he is known to have been in 1785. This could be Nathaniel (b. 1754) and his son Nathaniel (b. 1775). In the Hudson household are four males, one under ten, one 10-15, one 16-25 and one over 45. There are four females, one under ten, two 10-15 and one 26-44. This is a much younger family, possibly including a grandfather who is over 45. 1810 CENSUS: Probably the Nathaniel Porter in Kinderhook, Columbia, New York, Nathaniel Porter has one male over 45, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-15, and one female 26-44. 1820 CENSUS: Probably the one in Hudson, Columbia, N.Y. where he died a few years later. It is a much older family: one male is over 45. Three females, two are 16-26 and one is over 45. Nearby is David Porter, four males: one is under ten, two are 10-15 and one is 26-45. There are four females, two are under ten, one is 15-26 and one is 26-45. A young family, not his brother David. HUDSON, COLUMBIA COUNTY, NY Nathaniel moved from Stockbridge to Hudson in 1785 because he appears as a juror in a jury trial in September 1785 ("The History of Columbia County, NY," FHL 974.739 H2co, p. 64,) and on a land record in 1786. Since the first land there was sold in 1783, he was one of the first settlers at Hudson. He then apparently returned to Berkshire County where his two children were born in Stockbridge in 1782 and 1784, and moved back to Hudson before 1800. Land Records: "Nathaniel Porter of Hudson, Columbia..., joiner" was grantor (actually leased) a piece of land, part of Lot #27, formerly or now the property of Join Thurston" and Lot #26 "formerly or now the property of Stephen Paddock." Following this lease is a mortgage of the same property 3 and 4 March 1786. (Columbia County Deeds, Vol. A:10-12, FHL 431,471.) Cyrus Kinne Porter recorded that his brother David was also in Hudson working as a carpenter; they may have worked together. (A Porter Family Record, p. 6.) David was in Hudson on the 1810 Census. OCCUPATION: The Hudson Mechanical Society incorporated March 21, 1806, being "mechanics of the city of Hudson, in the county of Columbia." Nathaniel Porter, noted in land records to be a joiner, was one of the corporators. "The History of Columbia County, NY," FHL 974.739 H2co, p. 199.) DEATH: "Nathaniel Porter d. 8.3 (August 3) 8.18.1827 (date of publication in the newspaper), 72y, this city." (Deaths, Marriages and Misc. from Hudson, N.Y. Newspapers, FHL 974.739/H1 V3k, p. 123. The original source was "The Rural Repository or Bower of Literature," which published 1824-1851 in Hudson.)

RESEARCH: 1. A man named Nathaniel Porter is listed on the rolls for the 4th Connecticut Regiment. He served from December 7, 1780 to November 13, 1782 in the 7th Company commanded by Captain David Star. Colonel Zebulon Butler was the Regimental commander. However, it is known the present Nathaniel served in Berkshire Co., MA, not CT. 2. Only one man named Nathaniel Porter applied for pension 21 May 1818 Schoharie Co. NY aged 61 (b. 1759?) He had a wife Abigail aged 53 and children with him: Sarah, 18; John 15, Olive 13, and Hannah age 11. He served in the CT line S44243. This is not the same Nathaniel. 3. Is he the Nathaniel Porter who had a son in Goshen in 1775?: (Barbour Collection of Goshen Vital Records: "Nathanial son of Nathan." (F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, vol 14, p. 53. Source is Vol 1, p. 239 Vital Records.) There is no evidence he is the son of Nathaniel Porter born 1754 in Salisbury, but the process of elimination shows it was not Nathaniel of New Milford or Waterbury, CT or Sandisfield, MA because their families are known.) 4. Nathaniel Porter of New Milford was originally from Torrington and stayed in New Milford: 1790 CENSUS: New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut (p. 72) There are 1 male over 16 and 4 females in the household. 1800 CENSUS: New Milford (p. 109) Besides he and his wife (25-45) there are 1 son and 2 daughters under 10. 1810 CENSUS: New Milford 1 male under 25 and 1 over 45. Females: 1 under 10, 2 under 25 and 1 25-45. 1820 CENSUS: Does not appear. 5. Nathan Porter of Sandisfield mar. Pruda Lewis Apr. 14, 1766 in Sandisfield--much too old for our Nathaniel. The other Porters in Sandisfield (Simeon land records with Phineas) were from the Waterbury family, but he has not been traced to them. However, the only daughter listed on IGI for this couple, Clarissa, was noted to have been born in Waterbury. 6. Nathan Porter of Waterbury stayed there. He is consistently in the Waterbury census and his children were born in Waterbury. Not likely he left to live in Goshen for a while.
