GREAT BARRINGTON: On 9 December 1791, Nathaniel Porter of Great Barrington, yeoman, sold land in Gt. Barrington, part of Lot #32 "in the East Division of long lots in the Upper Housatonic property." Witnesses are Simeon Porter, Lucy Porter, Janna Porter and Henry W. Dwight. (Vol. 32: 352, FHL 879,132) Land Record for Joanna and Lucy Porter, both of Great Barrington, (Southern Berkshire Deeds 95:485, FHL 879,161.) Joanna and Lucy sold to William Harris of Great Barrington land "subject to a lease from Mary Patterson to us, and by us this day assigned to said william." Land is in a part of Gt Bar called Muddy Brook on the East side of the highway leading from Monument Mountain to Stockbridge called the Hotel Lot. 3 May 1837, recorded May 31, 1841. There is no other land record for them. Joanna and Lucy Porter of Great Barrington are continuously recorded in Pauper Accounts of the State of Massachusetts from 1823 to 1837: Pauper Accounts, published in Acts and Resolves Passed by the General Court By Massachusetts, (in 1835) p. 156, Published by Secretary of the Commonwealth, 1838, Item notes: 1835-38, Original from Harvard University, Digitized Nov 12, 2007: “Great Barrington, for support of Joanna Porter, Lucy Porter, (Roll 88:591; 103:409; 108:675; 109:156.)(http://books.google.com/books?id=9RcRAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA156&dq=%22Joanna+Porter%22+Great+Barrington&lr=#PPA149,M1) On 19 July 1801 (Probates of Berkshire Co., MA 12:365-67, FHL 873,487) she was witness to the will of her brother Simeon's father-in-law William Patterson. Witnesses are Barnabas Bidwell, Catherine Osborne and Lucy Porter (sister of Simeon Porter who is Sarah's husband.) Will was proved 7 May 1805 at Probate Court. Barnabas Bidswell, Esq. and Catherine Osborne, "two of the subscribing witnesses to the (will) appearing, made oath...that they together with Lucy Porter, who is now sick, are subscribers as witness to the same." DEATH: "Vital Records of Great Barrington to 1850," FHL 974,.41/G1 V2v, p. 16.) Miss, ____ (undated, but recorded between June 10, 1843, and May 7, 1844), a. 80, "in poor house." In 1844 Lucy would have been almost 78. Obviously everyone in town had forgotten the Porter sisters and had not even recorded their names properly when they died.
