In the Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, 1738-1850, FHL film 3803, p. 15, his baptism is given May 15, 1748. (Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files, FHL Reference Desk.) 2. Simeon Porter, born Nov. 26, 1751 in Connecticut; died August 27, 1838 in Vermont. Married Sarah Patterson, Sergeant, Ct. Line. (D.A.R. Index) BERKSHIRE COUNTY MA: Berkshire County Land Records, Middle District: Simeon Porter of Salisbury, Litchfield, CT is noted to be the son of Nathaniel Porter of Gt Bar. (Berkshire Deeds, 22:12) His sisters Joanna and Esther were witnesses to the deed. Simeon bought 200 acres from his father in Gt. Bar. Dated 28 August 1777 Simeon Porter is of Stockbridge 14 Jan. 1778, which means he came to Berkshire Co. between Sept and December 1777. Purchased and mortgaged land in Stockbridge from 1778 to 1792. (Deeds 19:330, 28:253, 33:85, 33:88) GREAT BARRINGTON Simeon was of Great Barrington 3 April 1790. He again mortgaged land, this time in Gt. Bar. (Deeds 28:298) On 9 December 1791, Nathaniel Porter of Great Barrington, yeoman, sold land in Gt. Barrington, part of Lot #32 "in the East Division of long lots in the Upper Housatonic property." Witnesses are Simeon Porter, Lucy Porter, Janna (Joanna) Porter and Henry W. Dwight. (Vol. 32: 352, FHL 879,132) Simeon was still of Great Barrington 5 Nov. 1792, selling, for the second time, a mill in Stockbridge, (Deeds 33:85) Berkshire county Land Records, Southern District: Simeon Porter of Great Barrington bought land in Great Bar. 29 March 1790. It is part of Lot #26 in the East Division of Long Lots, 100 acres. (29:55, FHL 879,131) William Pattison of Berlin, Hartford, CT sold Simeon Porter of Great Barrington part of Lot #31 in the East Division of lots in the Upper Housatonic at Great Barrington, 7 acres. 8 June 1792, (32:108, FHL 879,132.) NEW HAVEN, ADDISON, VERMONT: "Simeon Porter of New Haven" sold land in Goshen, VT 20 July 1798 (2:406); 16 Feb. 1796 (2:406) Simeon of New Haven bought land in Goshen VT 16 Feb 1796 (2:406) Simeon Porter was “of New Haven” from 1 Oct. 1805 to 15 Sept. 1826. (New Haven Deeds 6:4, 5, 6, 156; 9:321, FHL 28573, 28575) Although there is no record of a purchase before he was in New Haven, he sold out 15 Sept. 1826. (9:321) Apparently went to Buffalo, N.Y. then. OCCUPATION: In 1790 he was called on a land record: "Simeon Porter of Great Barrington, joiner." His brother Nathaniel Porter was also a joiner, (Berkshire Deeds 41:373) and possibly he went to Great Barrington since he seemed to be having financial difficulties. (Deeds 28:298, 3 April 1790.) A joiner is a carpenter for interior woodwork: doors, mouldings, stairs, etc 1790 CENSUS: Great Barrington, Berkshire, Mass. Nathaniel and his son Simeon are next to each other on the census. Nathaniel's household includes 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 3 females. Simeon's household includes 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16 and 4 females. (Roll: M637_4; Image: 0283, as seen on Ancestry.com) Next next to each other are his father Nathaniel and three Patterson families: David, Thomas and William 1800 CENSUS: New Haven, Addison, Vermont: 4 males in the household, one under 10, two are 10-16 and one over 45. Five females, two are under ten, two are 16-26 and one is 26-44. (Ancestry.com, 1800; Census Place: New Haven, Addison, Vermont; .Roll: 51; Page: 103; Image: 61.) 1810 CENSUS: New Haven, Addison, Vermont: 3 males, one is 10-16, one is 16-26 and one is over 45. The same ages for 3 females in the house. (Ancestry.com) 1820 CENSUS: New Haven, Addison, Vermont: 1 male over 45. Three females: one under 10; one 16-26 and one over 45. 1 slave. (Ancestry.com) Living two houses away is his son Zerah Porter. 1830 CENSUS: Only two in the USA. One is in Salem, Wash. Ohio, with the oldest male 40-50. Simeon would have been 83. Next door are Thomas and Amos Porter. Not our Simeon. The other is in Morris, Green, PA and the oldest adults are 30-40; certainly not our Simeon. He may have been living with family by then. BUFFALO, NEW YORK: Simeon Porter is listed among the first settlers in the Holland Purchase--Buffalo, Twp 10, R. 2, 1805. (Pioneer History of the Holland Purchase of Western New York, By Orsamus, p. 459, as found on Google Books.) PENSION: FHL book 929.273 P835m p. 8 lists Simeon's Revolutionary War Pension record. That states he lived in New Haven, Vermont; Buffalo, N.Y. and others. In 1790 he lived in Great Barrington, Mass. In 1794 moved to New Haven, Addison, Vermont. In 1830 he lived in Buffalo where he appl 1832 for pension d 27 Aug 1838 at Weybridge in Addison Co. VT "Soldier was born 26 Nov 1747 at Bethlehem in Litchfield Co. NY & sol. d 27 Aug 1838 at Weybridge in Addison Co. VT. His wid appl there 13 Jul 1839." Children named. (Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files.) DEATH: Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files. "Some Descendants of Robert Porter" claims he may have died in October 1838 at Genesee County, N.Y. That is probably because a man named Simeon Porter bought land there next to Benjamin Porter in Batavia, Genesee, N.Y. "In 1794 Simeon sold 290 acres and moved to New Haven, Addison Co., Vermont. In 1810 he was at Rutland, in 1820 back at New Haven, and 1830 not in Vermont. Applied for his pension from Buffalo, N.Y. in 1832. Both are buried at New Haven, Vt. ("Some Descendants of Robert Porter, Farmington Connecticut 1640," compiled by Margaret Porter Miller, Gateway Press, 1986. F.H.L. book 929.273, p. 7. RESEARCH: WATERBURY, CT: Another Simeon Porter's original deeds at Berkshire Co., Mass. are for "Simeon Porter of Waterbury, New Haven, CT. He bought land in Sandisfield, houselot #89, about 40 acres on Townhill 8 May 1776 (Berkshire Deeds 14:146, FHL 872082.) On the same day "Simeon Porter of Waterbury" bought land from Seth Smith in Stanisfield, Lot #8 in Townhill, 40 acres. (Berkshire Deeds 14:217, FHL 872082.) The next day he bought land from Thomas Newson--140 acres on Townhill at Stanisfield, Homelot #39. (Berkshire deeds 14:217, FHL 872082.) Obviously there are two men named Simeon Porters because on 28 August 1777 Nathaniel Porter of Great Barrington sold to "my son Simeon Porter of Salisbury, in Litchfield, CT" land in the upper Housatonic, formerly so-called, New Great Barrington, part of #34 and #35, 200 acres with house and improvements. (Berkshire deeds 22:12, FHL 872086) In Sandisfield Vital Records Simeon is married to Lucy and first child Sally born Jan. 8, 1778, before our Simeon was married in prob. Great Barrington. Other children born there were Samuel (1781) and Orren (1783.) This is unquestionably Simeon, born 18 June 1744, son of Thomas Porter of Waterbury and brother of Col. Phineas Porter of Waterbury. Land Records of Sandisfield show he sold land to his brother Phineas who still lived in Waterbury. SANDISFIELD, BERKSHIRE, MA: Simeon Porter is "of Sandisfield, Berkshire MA" when he sold land to John Allen in Sandisfield, "lying in Lots #9 and #10, containing about 80 acres." Land bounds on Nathan Porter dated 4 March 1783. (Berkshire deeds 16:435, FHL 872083) He is of Sandisfield on 21 May 1783 when he bought land in Sandisfield, 80 acres on Town Hill. (Berkshire Deeds 16:434, FHL 872083) Land records showed he was consistently in Sandisfield. |
