Note | BIRTH: Salisbury Town Clerk: Record of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Town Meetings, 1740-1848, FHL film 1509740 item 1, p. 184. Also recorded Barbour Collection of Salisbury Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2w1 Vol 53, p. 243. GREAT BARRINGTON, MA: "They (Nathaniel II) lived at Woodbury until 1750-52 when they removed to Salisbury. In 1771 they moved with their younger children to Great Barrington, Mass." ("Some Descendants of Robert Porter, Farmington Connecticut 1640," compiled by Margaret Porter Miller, Gateway Press, 1986. F.H.L. book 929.273, P835m, p. 6) There is no evidence David ever lived in Berkshire County. In town records of Gt. Bar. David Porter was assessed one poll tax in 1786 (Tax Bill quoted in A Porter Family Record by Cyrus Kinne Porter, p. 6,) so he may have lived there for a short time. However, it could also be for David and Esther Porter found in in Great Barrington, Berkshire County Land Records, Middle District (19:242) in 1784. They are the David and Esther Porter of Waterbury, "land that belongs to us as our share of the estate of our honoured father Timothy Hopkins, late of said Great Barrington, deceased." If he ever lived there, the present David moved from Berkshire County without leaving much of a trace. 1790 CENSUS: Only one David Porter, living alone at Hillsdale, Columbia, N.Y. He would be 27 years old and is listed as a male over age 16. He is the only David Porter listed for New York State. Since the present David was married by then, he more likely was living with his wife's family. (see below) More probably living with Gideon Burr at Cicero, Columbia, New York. There are three males over 16 in the household, 2 under 16. and four females. This census could include Gideon's daughter Esther and her husband David Porter who had no living children by then, since David doesn't appear in the census. Gideon is not on the index, but is on p. 222 of the Canaan Census, line 18. 1800 CENSUS: Esther's father (or brother) Gideon Burr is still in Canaan, but there is no one in the household either David's or Esther's age. There is no Gideon Jun. on the census as there was in 1790, so this is possibly Esther's brother. (One male under ten, one male 16-25, and one male over 45. (David would be 37). One female under ten, one 10-15, four 16-25 (Esther would be 27) and one over 45.) Somehow David and Esther were missed on this census. A David Porter in Fabius, Onondaga, New York, but Fabius is consistently another family. Males are unreadable. Two females, one is under ten, the other is 16-25. (Esther would have been 28.) Neighbors are Joseph Strong, Abijah Webster, Isaac Chauncey, Thomas and Jesse Kenney. Other men named David Porter in New York are in Chenango, Delaware, and Albany Counties. There is a David Porter living in Williamstown, Berkshire, Mass. However, it is not the present David (age 37) because both the Williamtown David Porter and his wife are 16-25. There is another David Porter living at Lee, Berkshire, MA. He has three males in the family, Two are 16-25 and one is over 45. (David would be 37). There are four females. Two are 10-16 and one is over 45. Also in town are Samuel and Ebenezer Porter. None of the dates are correct for David. 1810 CENSUS: He is the David Porter in Hudson, Columbia, N.Y. where his brother Nathaniel lives. Since they were both Carpenters, they may have been working together. There are two males under ten in the household and one male 26-44 (David would be 47.) There is one female under ten, one 16-25 and one 26-44 (Esther would be 37.) Prob. his son is the David Porter in Canaan, Columbia, New York, living with other "free persons." Other men named David Porter are in Green and Seneca Counties in New York. 1820 CENSUS: Since he died in May of 1820, he may not be on any census. Since there is no Esther Porter listed, the following are of interest: Probably the David Porter in Cicero, Onondaga, N.Y.: Two males under 5, and one 26-45. One female under five, one 5-10, one 26-45. (Esther would be 47) (I don't think David was here.) Could be David Jr. Fabius, Onondaga, NY: 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 16-18, 2 males 18-26 and one over 45. Females, two under 5, one 5-10, one 10-16, one 16-26. Next door is Stephen Porter. Probably not the present David because this is consistently another family. OCCUPATION: He was a "carpenter, joiner, mechanic." Miller, "Some Descendants of Robert Porter," p.6. See also "A Few Twigs from a Branch," by Cyrus Kinne Porter, Buffalo, 1896, FHL fiche 6010383; NEGHS CS/71/P839: "a family tradition that he learned the trade of carpenter and joiner with his eldest brother Simeon." COLUMBIA, NY CANAAN: He was married and had children in Canaan from 1788 to 1808. ("Porter Family Record: Some Twigs from a Branch," NEGHS CS/71/P839.) Children are named with full birth dates. His wife's family was from Canaan and were there on the census for many years. Although David and Esther don't appear in Canaan until the 1810 census, they may have been living with her parents, Gideon and Hannah Burr who are on the 1790 census. Unfortunately, a search of records reveals neither family is found in vital or church records in Canaan. (JSP 2008) HUDSON: "It is a family tradition that he learned the trade of carpenter and joiner with his eldest brother Simeon, and was thus employed in or near Hudson, N.Y., when about eighteen years of age." (Cyrus Kinne Porter, p. 6.) ONONDAGA COUNTY, NY "David Porter was a first-class mechanic, and it is presumed that he devoted the most of his time to the building business until he purchased a farm on the shores of the Oneida Lake in the Town of Cicero, about 1812 or 1813, where he resided till his death." (Cyrus Kinne Porter, p. 6.) Land Records show David and Esther were in Lysander and Cicero, both listed in Onondaga County at that time: David Porter of Lysander bought land in Lysander 4 June 1813, Vol. N:265-266, FHL 860,934.) David Porter of Cicero bought land in Cicero 20 July 1816. (Vol. S:53, FHL 860,938) David Porter and Esther his wife of Cicero sold land in Cicero 30 Nov. 1818, (Vol. V:438-440, FHL 860,940) Witnesses were David G. Porter and Lydia Porter, children of David and Esther. CICERO, ONONDAGA, NY: Land records show they were there by 1816, however they may have been there much earlier. A man named David Porter is appointed one of the overseers of Highways 5 April 1796 in Cicero, the same meeting at which land in Cicero was proposed to be divided away from Onondaga County. ("Reunion of the Sons and Daughters of Pompey," FHL 982,255, item 3, p. 237.) DEATH: "Revolutionary War Soldiers Resident or Dying in Onondaga Co.," The Onondaga Historical Assoc.: "In memory of David Porter, who died May 26, 1820, aged 57 years." Stone Arabia Cemetery ("Revolutionary Soldiers Resident Or Dying in Onondaga County, N. Y," p. 20 by Chase: "Esther Burr, of Canaan, N. Y., '88, who was born there Feb. 22, 1772." (Found on http://books.google.com/books?id=-3sPAAAAYAAJ&dq=%22David+Porter%22+Pompey,+Onondaga&lr=&source=gbs_summary_s&cad=0) In this source the following is stated: "Mr. Porter was born in Salisbury, Ct., December 4, 1763, and was too young for Conn. records. He married Esther Burr, of Canaan, N. Y., '88, who was born there Feb. 22, 1772. He was a carpenter, and after living in Pompey and De Ruyter, he bought a farm in Cicero, on Oneida Lake, in 1812 or '13. He may have been in Capt. McClure's Co., Vt., '81, but more probably was enrolled in 7th Regiment, Westchester Co., N. Y. The name appears in several Conn. companies, but he was too young for these." Descendants were in New York, many in Indiana, Ohio. RESEARCH: David Porter is such a common name, several must be dismissed to understand the present David: 1. Captain David Porter listed among Revolutionary War soldiers from Woodbury, History of Ancient Woodbury, FHL book 974.6 H2cw, p. 778-787. The present David never lived in Woodbury. 2. Another David and Esther Porter lived in Waterbury, CT and bought land in Berkshire County, but David is from a different family. (Barbour Collection of Waterbury Vital Records, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2w1 Vol 50, p. 273. "David, son James, m. Esther Hopkins dau Dea. Timothy.") In 1784 they bought land in Great Barrington. (Berkshire County Land Records, Middle District (19:242 ) 3. A David Porter lived in Columbia County at the same time David and Esther lived there. That David was a Reverend and lived in Catskill, N.Y. before 1800. (See The History of columbia County, NYH, FHL 974.739 H2co, p. 107.) 4. There is another David Porter in Fabius, Onondaga, New York, the son of Dea. Porter "a native of Pompey Hill." ("Reunion of the Sons and Daughters of Pompey..." FHL 982,255, item 3, p. 132.) That David was probably the one named Overseer of Highways 5 April 1796. (p. 237) The present David was still in Columbia County in 1796. |
