Note | BIRTH: Salisbury Town Clerk: Record of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Town Meetings, 1740-1848, FHL film 1509740 item 1, p. 184. Also recorded Salisbury Vital Records, Barbour Collection, F.H.L. book 974.6 V2wL, Vol 37, p. 243. "Joseph son Nathaniell & Abigail Porter." FAMILY: This family found in "The Descendants of John Porter of Windsor, Conn." 1635-9, compiled by Henry P. Andrews, F.H.L. film 801, p 272. Both Andrews and Joseph Porter of Maine believed this family to be in the descent of John Porter of Windsor, CT. However, the link on which they made the mistake is Joseph's father Nathaniel. They thought Nathaniel was the Nathaniel of Lebanon who was the brother of Joshua Porter of Salisbury and Great Barrington. In fact, the Nathaniel Porter of Salisbury is the son of Nathaniel of Woodbury and Bethlehem (JSP). 1790 CENSUS: The only Joseph Porter is listed in Maine, East of Machias, No. 4, Washington County. There are five males over 16 in the household and one female. 1800 CENSUS: Frankfort, Hancock, Maine. There are two males, one under ten and one 26-44. Six females: four under ten, one 10-16 and one 26-44. About right, although more females and fewer males than we have. Next door are Neazey, Littlefield, Boulton, and Coulard. 1810 CENSUS: Frankfort, Hancock, Maine. There are four males: one is under ten, two are 10-16 and one is 26-44. Seven females: three under ten, three 10-16 and one 26-44. Joseph would have been 49 and David would have been 18, but other than that it fits this family well. 1820 CENSUS: Not in Frankfort. Joseph Jr. is there, age 18-26 with no older male in the house. 1830 CENSUS: One Joseph Porter at Stafford, Orange, Vermont. The oldest adults are 40-50. Joseph would have been 69. One in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT, oldest adults 60-70, which would work for our Joseph. Another in Waterbury REVOLUTIONARY WAR: 1. Nathaniel and Joseph Porter enlisted at Pittsfield ("History of Berkshire County, MA," FHL book 974.41 H2hb, p. 203.) FRANKFORT MAINE: Joseph apparently went early to Hancock County, Mass, later Maine. He met and married there in 1790. In a letter dated Dec. 4, 1878 from Henry P. Andrews to J.W. Porter, a descendant of Joseph, Henry summarized this family, including marriages, children and birth dates. (R. Stanton Avery Special Collections, NEHGS Library, manuscript A-4658. This page not numbered but placed between pages 93 and 94, copy in possession of Janet Porter.) Both men claimed Joseph was the ancestor of the Frankfort Maine Family, but both thought he was the son of Nathaniel Porter of Lebanon, CT because Nathaniel of Lebanon's brother Joshua was there and is published in every book about the history of Connecticut because he was very famous. Land Records There are two land records for him, both of which show him to be "of Frankfort, Hancock, Mass." (later Maine.) "Joseph Porter of Frankfort, Hancock, Mass, husbandman, for $100 sold land in Frankfort "carved out of the hundred acre lot I now occupy which lies in said Frankfort in the 3rd tier from the Penobscot." It is 61 acres. "In witness whereof we the said Joseph Porter and Eunice, wife of the said Joseph..." dated 9 August 1805 (Hancock Co. Deeds: 17:221.) "Joseph Porter of Frankfort, Hancock, Mass, husbandman," sold 37 acres, "being the lot I now live on" to Enock Sampson. It is "all the residue of the hundred acre lot I purchased of Charles Grant exceptng a 61 acre lot I conveyed to Archibald Jones on 29 August last." Dated 6 June 1806. (Hancock Co. Deeds 20:96.) DEATH: He apparently didn't leave Frankfort his entire married life. No doubt he also died there, but there is no record of the death locally and no will or land record to prove when and where. NOT A DESCENDANT OF NATHANIEL OF LEBANON, CT: Several researchers and members of this family incorrectly assumed Joseph to be the son of Nathaniel Porter born 1755 in Lebanon, CT because Nathaniel's brother Joshua was in Salisbury and Great Barrington and became famous. That is why the Joseph Porter family is found in the book "The Descendants of John Porter of Windsor, Conn, in the line of his great grandson, Col. Joshua Porter, M.D. of Salisbury," (FHL film 648) by Andrews as well as in the book of the descendants of Robert Porter of Farmington, CT by Margaret Porter Holman. We now know the Nathaniel Porter who is father of Joseph is the son of Nathaniel Sr. of Woodbury and Bethlehem (see Nathaniel Sr. Documentation.) Nathaniel of Lebanon was never in Salisbury, and in fact Lebanon land and vital records show he was continuously in Lebanon. RESEARCH NOTES: One Joseph Porter, Massachusetts line S8967, applied 10 Mar 1837 Cuyahoga Co. Ohio aged 77 with a wife aged 70. The present Joseph would have been 75. |
