They were received into the Bethlehem church July 1763: "Jacob Frisby and wife of Branford received July 1763." (Bethlehem Congregational Church records, Vol. 1, p. 9 FHL film 3803.) His oldest brother Elisha and youngest brother Amos moved to Bethlehem in 1767 and 1765 and were also received into the church. BETHLEHEM: LAND RECORDS OF BETHLEHEM Vol. 9, p. 257 (FHL 6152) I Daniel Dudley of Woodbury...for the consideration of one thousand pounds money ...paid...by James Frisbe and Jacob Frisbe of Branford in New Haven County and Colony aforesaid..."3 December, 1753 Vol 13, 1760-1764 (FHL film 6154) p. 117 James Frisbie and Jacob Frisbie of Branford bought land in Woodbury from Nathan Hurd of Woodbury for 82 pounds. "Voted that James and Joanna Frisbie, also Jacob and Ruth Frisbie be dismissed from this church and recommended to the watch and fellowship of the Church of Christ at Bethlehem," dated May 1, 1763. (Branford CT First Congregational Church original handwritten records, Vol. 1, p. 32, (FHL film 3712, item 3.) They were received into the Bethlehem Church July 1763: "James Frisby and wife and Jacob Frisby and wife of Branford received July 1763." (Bethlehem Congregational Church records, Vol. 1, FHL film 3803.) James and Joanna were consistently written first, probably senority. His oldest brother Elisha and youngest brother Amos moved to Bethlehem in 1767 and 1765 and were also received into the church. They left Bethlehem at least by 1772 (after his marriage with Clamis Darrin) when James appeared on a list of Wilkes-Barre proprietors. In April 1775 James and family are listed at the settlement of Shickshinny. In 1776 and again in 1777 James and his son James Jr. enlisted in the Revolutionary War. See "Edward Frisbie of Branford"...p. 64-65. He and Clamis were back again in Bethlehem for the 1790 Census. 1790 CENSUS: Bethlehem. Three males over 16: one is James Sr., the other male over 16 may have been a son born before 1774. The male under sixteen was possibly James, the son of James and Clamis. There were three females, one of whom was Clamis and the others were daughters. Neighbors were his brothers Jacob and Amos and James Eggleston, husband of his niece Ruth Porter. GOSHEN: "There were two families of Goshen who had gone to Wyoming in 1774, James Frisbie and Stephen Tuttle. Mr. Frisbie's son James was killed; he, with a younger son, was taken prisoner. They escaped the fate of many; were taken to Canada, and afterwards released." The History of Litchfield Col, CT, FHL 496,898, p. 340. PENNSYLVANIA: "At least for a part of the time between 1760 and 1783 he was living in the Wyoming Valley, near Wilkes-Barre, now in Pennsylvania, but then a part of Connecticut." "Edward Frisbie of Branford and his Descendants," Vol 1, by Nora G. Frisbie, FHL book 929.273 F917fn, Vol. 1, p. 64. This source further states that In the annals of the Wyoming Valley, James Frisbie of Branford bought a quarter right of Timothy Rose in November 1760. Since his mother was a Rose, this possibly was a relative. James Frisbie of Branford appears on a list of proprietors on September 1761 as the owner of a half-share, although it is known he moved in 1763 to Bethlehem from Branford, so was not in Penn. (p. 65). In "An Account of Proprietors admitted" to the Susquhannah Company in Wyoming Valley, PA, admitted Sept 4, 1761. On the list is "James Frisbee of Branford, 1/2 share." (The Susquehannah Company Papers, Vol II, p. 146 (FHL book 974.8 H2su). On a list of proprietors in the township of Judea a few miles from Wyoming Co. Penn in 1772: Thomas Porter, James Frisbie and Joseph Waugh. History of Wyoming in a series of letters by Charles Miner, p. 167. (see also http://books.google.com/books?id=JmSNfAkqhs8C&pg=PA167&dq=james+frisbie+wyoming+pennsylvania#PPA167,M1) In 1775 Col. Plunkett destroyed this little village, imprisoned the men in Sunbury Jail, and sent the women and children to their relatives nearby. In A list of proprietors dated at Wilkes-Barre in April 1773 included the names of James Frisbie and Walter Frisbee, who may be the son of James. In April 1775 James and family are listed at the settlement of Shickshinny. In 1776 and again in 1777 James and his son James Jr. enlisted in the Revolutionary War. See "Edward Frisbie of Branford"...p. 64-65. James went to Litchfield Penn, later Wyoming Co. Penn. with his brother-in-law Thomas Porter. He is on the tax list for 1776 in the Lackaway Dist. (Tax list for the various districts of Westmoreland Co., Colony of Connecticut, August, 1776. Copies of these tax lists can be found printed in "Proceedings and Collections of The Wyoming Historical and Geological Society," V: 209-218. (Found on http://www.teachout.org/du/nan/uptheriver.html July 9, 1779: James Frisbee is appointed appraiser of the estate of Asaph Whittlesey, late of Westmoreland, July 9, 1779. (Westmoreland Dist. Litchfield Co. CT, Wyoming Valley Probate, Liber A. (FHL film 5943) On September 26, 1775 Connecticut citizens who had experienced losses in the unprovoked attack of Pennsylvanians on the Connecticut claimants complained of “Goods Taken by the Authority of Northumberland County in the Province of Pennsylvania on the 26 day of Sep Last on the Warriors run near the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.” On that list is James Frisby whose “1 gun £4 ½ lb powder horn bullet pouch shot bag Hatchet & Charger flints 1£ knife 1/” to equal 5.1.0 were taken from him. (The Susquehannah Papers, Ed. Robert J. Taylor, Vol. VI, pp. 355-358, FHL book 974.8 H2su.) REVOLUTIONARY WAR Revolutionary War Service Records. James Frisby in Capt Robert Durkee’s Company, Receipt Roll for Bounty, Summerset Co. Milstone, Feb 10, 1777. Another card for James Frisby and one for James Jr. in the Connecticut 4th Regiment, Capt. Durkee’s, 1777. (FHL film 1,485,525.) Note, there were also an Israel and Reuben Frisbie in Butler's Regiment who served from 1780-1782.) Early in 1777 two companies were formed among the CT settlers in the Wyoming Valley of PA. They served in the Wyoming Valley company of Capt. Robert Durkee who joined Washington's army in New Jersey, took part in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and the defense of Fort Mifflin and went into Valley Forge for the winter of 1777-78. Serving in one of these companies were a James Frisbie age 30 (actually James Sr. was over 50) and a James Junior age 19. James Senior was in that unit in 1778. ("The Frisbie Family in the Rev. War," by Nora G. Frisbie, p. 28, 90.) "James Frisby, Wyoming Valley Copany, Capt. Robert Durkee, 1777, age 30, size 6'." (Conn. Men 263) A history of Wilkes-Barre lists the names of the men who were serving in the Valley militia in 1777, and included are James Frisbie and James Frisbie Junior, the latter with the notation that he had died 27 July 1777. However, the Connecticut service book has no record of that service in 1777 for James Senior . ( "Edward Frisbie of Branford and his Descendants," Vol 1, by Nora G. Frisbie, FHL book 929.273 F917fn, Vol. 1, p. 66.) 1779 on a pay list with his son Jonathan Frisbie on an expedition raised under General Sullivan which circled through Pennsylvania and New York, destroying Indian villages in reprisal for the Wyoming Valley raid the year before. They are on a pay list of April-May, 1780. ( "Edward Frisbie of Branford and his Descendants," Vol 1, by Nora G. Frisbie, FHL book 929.273 F917fn, Vol. 1, p. 66.) The History of Luzerne Co., Pa., notes a James Frisbie in a militia company of April 1780, which may have been the mustering-out roster of the Sullivan Expedition of 1779. ("The Frisbie Family in the Rev. War," by Nora G. Frisbie, p. 111.) In Dec. 1780 a party of John Butler's English Rangers attacked the settlement of Shawney in Wyoming Valley and carried off 7 prisoners, including James and Jonathan Frisbee. They were taken to Niagara and Montreal. Eventually they were released or escaped. One of the men, and perhaps all 7 of them, is known to have escaped to Poultney, Vermont where his son James (of Clamis) eventually located. (Edward Frisbie of Branford and his Descendants," Vol 1, p. 66.) NEW YORK: In 1783 both James and Jonathan are amongst applicants to New York State for lands for the families "Destressed and Drove from here by the Savages in 1778." In 1783 Wyoming Valley was ceded to Penn. and the CT people were driven from their lands. James apparently left because he was in Bethlehem by the 1790 Census and stayed there until his death in 1814. "Edward Frisbie of Branford and his Descendants," Vol 1, by Nora G. Frisbie, FHL book 929.273 F917fn, Vol. 1, p. 64-5. In 1789 Jonathan sold land "under the Connecticut claimants" in Hanover township, which may have been his father's land because there is no record of his having purchased it. Since Jonathan wasn't mentioned in James' will, perhaps this land was his legacy. TIME LINE: 1722 - Born in Branford 1743 - Married at Branford 1745: Land Record, Bethlehem, CT. 1753: Land Record, Bethlehem, CT. 1754: Land Record, Bethlehem, CT. 1760 - Bought land at Wyoming Co. Pennsylvania 1761 - James Frisbie of Branford appears on a list of proprietors on September 1761 as the owner of a half-share of land in Wyoming Valley, PA 1763 - Moved to Bethlehem with his brother Jacob. Their wives were Porter Sisters from Bethlehem. 1772 - Remarried at Bethlehem, making it unlikely he had previously moved to Pennsylvania. Since he married a 21-year old and he would have been 50, he wouldn't have been bold enough to come back for her, and there was no mail service. Almost certainly he was still in Bethlehem. 1772 - Probably moved to Pennsylvania after his second marriage. James is listed among the proprietors of Judea later that year on new homesteads "over the mountain." 1773 - Proprietors at Wilkes-Barre included the names of James Frisbie and Walter Frisbee, who may be the son of James. 1775 - James and family are listed at the settlement of Shickshinny 1776 - He is on the Tax list for Lackaway Dist. (Tax list for the various districts of Westmoreland Co., 1777 - He and his son James are listed as serving in the Wyoming Valley militia. James Jr. is killed. 1778 - Driven from their homes by Indians and Pennsylvania Rev. War units. 1779 - On a pay list with his son Jonathan Frisbie on an expedition raised under General Sullivan. 1780 - In Dec. James and Jonathan Frisbee were taken prisoner by the British and taken to Niagara and Montreal. Eventually they were released or escaped. 1782 - Jonathan bought and sold land in Bethlehem in 1782, 1783. 1783 - James and Jonathan are among applicants to New York State for lands for the families driven out of their Wyoming Valley homes in 1778. 1783 - Wyoming Valley was ceded to Penn. and the CT people were driven from their lands. James apparently left, avoiding the ensuing bloodbath. 1785 - Sold land with Jacob Frisbie in Bethlehem 1790 - Bethlehem, Litchfield, CT. By then he was 68 years old. 1814 - Died in Bethlehem at age 92. DEATH: "Headstone Inscriptions, Bethlehem, CT, Carmel Hill Cemetery, p. 19, FHL book 974.61/B2 V3h. He was 92 years old. Cited in Hale Collection of Tombstone Inscriptions. The exact quote: Frisbie, James Mar 12, 1814 -91, Bethlehem 602 Inscriptions; Cemetery 2, p. 21. (FHL 3127.) PROBATE: Woodbury Probates, Vol 13, p. 69, FHL film 6176, item 2. James died at age 92 March 17, 1814 in Bethlehem. His will names his wife Clamay three times. He named no children and gave everything to the two living children and the two living grandchildren of his brother Jacob who also lived in Woodbury, his own children having moved to the western frontier. He also left one-third of his estate to "the deacons of the church of Christ in Bethlehem and their successors in office to be used for the use of the church as long as (the minister) and they abide in their present confession of faith and the doctrine and practices defined by John Calvin the noted reformer, the late Reverend Edwards and the Rev. Joseph Bellamy, D.D." |
