Note | BIRTH: He was 84 when he died, putting his death almost exactly at the date of the Daniel Bradley who was born in Guilford, son of Abraham Bradley and Jane Leaming. There is another Daniel Bradley in Fairfield, but it has been proven he is not the one Sarah married. There is no other evidence the Daniel born in 1710 is correct. Pedigree Resource CD #128, Pin #74177, the son of Abraham Bradley and Jane Leaming. Several sources in Ancestral File claim the date was 15 Oct. 1710, but there is no vital record in Connecticut to prove it. He is mentioned in the probate of Sarah Bradley which is filed with that of her first husband Samuel Church.. In 1766: "Daniel Bradley, appointed legal guardian of Samuel Church, Jr." Woodbury Probates, FHL film 6173, Vol. 6, p. 220 Aone (?) Church, minor of the town of Woodbury makes choice of her Father-in-law, Mr. Daniel Bradley to be guardian. (They meant step-father), July 23, 1771 NEHGS Documentation added to our Nathaniel Porter article: Sarah married second at Woodbury, Connecticut, 12 June 1762, Daniel Bradley,[] born at Guilford, Connecticut, 15 October 1710, son of Abraham and Jane (Leaming) Bradley, and widower of Abigail Hand. Without more primary evidence, I didn't dare quote the vital record showing he was the son of Abraham Bradley and Jane Leaming. However, when we published the article the NEHGS Editor filled in the vital information: Donald Lines Jacobus, “Guilford Vital Records in Town Records, Book A,” The American Genealogist 13 (1936-37):88-98, 181-89, 242-45; 15 (1938-39):184-91 at 186 (parents’ marriage); 16 (1939-40):180-88; 17 (1940-41):127-28, 191-92, 255-56; 18 (1941-42):128 (birth); 19 (1942-43):33-36. The editor gave the following response: From: Nehgreditor@aol.com To: BCCook@aol.com, Sent: Sat, Aug 1, 2009 11:46 am, Subject: Re: (no subject) Dear Bryson Cook: I doubt there was another Daniel Bradley the right age available to marry Sarah (Porter) Church. I’ll leave our text as is and add the citation to the 1903 Register article. Henry B. Hoff, Editor, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register Email: nehgreditor@aol.com, Published by New England Historic Genealogical Society www.NewEnglandAncestors.org WOODBURY LAND RECORDS Vol. 17, p. 27 Thomas Porter of Woodbury sold to Daniel Bradley for £2-0-0 land in the town of Woodbury and parish of Woodbury, part of the Sixth Lot in the Third Tier of lots in Bethlehem. It is bounded west on Daniel Bradley’s land, south on Thomas Porter’s land, north on the highway. DEATH: Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, Vol. 1., p. 26: "Daniel Bradley died Aug. 16, 1793, age 84." (FHL film 3803, item 1, p. 26.) Pedigree Resource Compact Disc #75 Pin #2225 claims Daniel Bradley died in 1756 in Woodbury. another Submission (CD 3) claims he either died either in 1756 or 1793. Since his death date in 1793 clearly directs us to the Daniel Bradley born in 1710, I believe the present assumptions are correct. HISTORY: Daniel Bradley married Abigail Hand of Guilford (Guilford Vital Records 2:56 as found in Barbour). She died in 1746. I think it was the same Daniel Bradley, but can't prove it. Abigail Hand was first cousin to John Hand, father of Deborah and Elizabeth Hand who married Porter Brothers and were therefore sisters-in-law to Daniel Bradley when he married Sarah Church. |

Barbour Collection of Woodbry Vital Records, FHL book 974.6 V2wL, Vol. 53, p. 140. "Sarah Porter mar. Daniel Bradley June 12, 1762, VR 1:82) He is named in Woodbury Probates, guardian of a minor child of Samuel Church (FHL film 6173, Vol. 6, p. 220) Aone (?) Church, minor of the town of Woodbury makes choice of her Father-in-law, Mr. Daniel Bradley to be guardian. (They meant step-father), July 23, 1771 |
Note | Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records (Guilford VR 2:56) Since there is not a vital record for the birth of either Daniel or Abigail, there is no proof it was these two who married. However in the book Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, FHL 974.67 G1 D2t, p. 597 Abigail the daughter of Stephen and Sarah Pierson Hand married Daniel Bradley, obviously the right couple. In the article "Nathaniel Porter of Farmington and Bethlehem, Connecticut, by Bryson C. Cook and Janet S. Porter, pub. NEHGS 2009, the staff at NEHGS provided to following documentation for Daniel Bradley and this marriage: Talcott, Families of Early Guilford [note 11], 117-18, 121; Ralph D. Smyth, “The Bradleys of New Haven and Guilford (Conn.),” Register 57 (1903):134-41 at 136-37, 141; Smyth, “Joseph Hand of East Guilford” [note 12], Register 55:32. |
