Note | BIRTH: "Samuel Church, second son of Nathaniel Church, of Salisbury, CT and grandson of Samuel and Mary (copied from incorrect source-Should have been Sarah) was born in Salisbury on February 4, 1785. His mother was Lois, second daughter of John Ensign, of Canaan. COLLEGE: His preparation for College was completed under the Rev. Azel Backus (Yale 1787,) of Bethlehem. In College he was distinguished as a scholar, giving especial promise in belles-lettres." HISTORY: William Cothren, "History of Ancient Woodbury," p. 526-7 states "Hon. Samuel, LL.D., who was born in 1785. He graduated at Yale College, in 1803, and settled in his native town as a lawyer. He was representative to the General Assembly at six sessions, senator three years, judge of probate eleven years, and a member of the constitutional convention in 1818. In 1832, he was appointed a judge of the superior court and supreme court of errors, and in "1847 he was elected chief justice. In 1845, he removed to Litchfield, his present residence. His son Albert E. Church is professor of mathematics at West Point. Samuel P. Church, M.D., of Ansonia, is another son."
