Nov. 16, 1756, Woodbury V.R. 1:24) Original Records at the Town Clerk’s Office, Connecticut, Births, Marriages and Deaths, Vol. 1 p. 23: "Nathaniel ye son of Samuel Church by his wife Sarah was b. Nov. ye 16th, 1756.” Also found in Congregational Church Records of Bethlehem Connecticut, Vol. 1, p. 17: "Nathaniel son of Samuel Church baptized Feb. 20, 1757." (FHL film 3803, item 1, p. 17.) In Vol. 5:43 he is named in his father’s probate. FAMILY: His family listed in Elmer Shepherd Genealogies and Family Group Records Collection, FHL film 1684312, item 18, last card. Samuel Church born April 2, 1785 is the son of Nathaniel of Salisbury and Lois. Nathaniel is the son of Samuel of Bethlehem and Mary (Actually it was Sarah) Porter." He was named in his father's probate: "Nathaniel youngest son..." (Connecticut Probate Records, Woodbury District, 1720-1880, FHL Film 1032812, June 19, 1761) HISTORY: "Nathaniel, youngest son of Samuel, was but three yearsold when his father died. He was bound an apprentice to a weaver...His master was a hard-hearted man, and at about the age of 18, he left him and enlisted into the Revolutionary army. He was severely wounded at the battle of White Plains, by a grape-shot larger than a hickory nut, which is now in the possession of his son, Chief Justice Samuel Church, of Litchfield. He married Lois, second daughter of John Ensign, Esq., of Canaan, and settled in Salisbury, Conn." William Cothren, History of Ancient Woodbury, p. 527.
