BIRTH: Ancestral File. He is listed there with parents, marriage and correct marriage date, so I have assumed the rest is correct. LAND RECORDS: Holman, Winifred Lovering, "The Porters Manuscript: ancestors of Chauncy Devereuax Stillman", Watertown, Mass: W.L.Holman, 1939. Cite as: The Porters (Mss A 5387). R. Stanton Avery Special Collections Department, New England Historic Genealogical Society. In this manuscript Ms. Holman proves that Sarah Porter, daughter of Nathaniel, married Samuel Church using the following land records: "24 Jan. 1754, Thomas Porter of Woodbury sold Samuel Church of same and to Peter Welton of Waterbury, land on the North Purchase of Woobury, and mentions as bounds the heirs of his late wife, Elizabeth Porter, deceased and the land owned by the heirs o fhis mother Joanna Porter deceased." (Woodbury Deeds, 9:190.) "21 Jun. 1754, Samuel Church of Woodbury and Peter Welton of Waterbury quitclaim to "our brother Thomas Porter," of said Woodbury all our rights to certain land there. (Woodbury Deeds, 10:88.) Thomas Porter’s Quit Claim from Church and Welton: ”To all people to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that we Samuel Church of Woodbury in the said county of Litchfield and Colony of Connecticut in New England and Peter Welton of Waterbury in New Haven County and Colony aforesaid for a valuable consideration in hand received before the ensealing hereof of our brother Thomas Porter…” (Jan. 21, 1754, Woodbury Land records: Vol. 10, p. 88.) Note

MARRIAGE: Frederic W. Bailey , Early Connecticut marriages as found on ancient church records prior to 1800 (Baltimore, Maryland : Genealogical Pub. Co., c1968 Physical), 974.6 K2bf 1968 - FHL US/CAN Book: "Samuel Church, m. Sary Porter, Jun. 2, 1740." This may be from the original Bethlehem Congregational Church Records, Vol 1, p. 28: Samuel Church married Sary Porter June 2, 1740." (FHL film 3803, item 1, p. 28) Also found in Barbour Collection, Connecticut Vital Records; Woodbury Births, Marriages, Deaths 1674-1850 (Connecticut State Library 1926), New England Historic Genealogical Society, 101 Newbury Street, Boston, MA 02116-3007. "Sarah, m. Samuel Church, Jun. 23, 1746." (This record is probably transcribed incorrectly.) It appears the same date in another printing of that volume: FHL book 974.6 V2wL, Vol 53, p. 140. 1. Bethlehem Church Records, 1738-1750: Samuel Church m. Sary Porter, Jun. 2, 1740. 2. Baily, Conn. Marriages: Samuel Church m. Sary Porter, Jun. 2, 1740. 3. Woodbury Town Records, Town Clerk's Office: Samuel Church & Sarah Porter, md. May 29th, 1750 4. Barbour, Woodbury, LR7:3: Sarah Porter m. Samuel Church, Jun 23, 1746. Note: Previous research has been proven incorrect: History of Ancient Woodbury, Conn. 1659 to 1854, by William Cothren, 1854. F.H.L. book 974.6 H2cw, p. 669. Although the place is not mentioned in this book which is Vol 1, in Vol 3 ("History of Ancient Woodbury," Vol 3, FHL film 6181, item 3, Marriages in Woodbury,) the marriage is listed so it obviously is Woodbury. Also found in Vital Records of Woodbury, F.H.L. film 1491,338, item 2, p. 5. Her husband is thought to be Lieut. Adam Hinman, proved incorrect by probate and land record research documented in notes of Sarah Porter and Samuel Church.

SEALING: It was done 25 Feb. 1949 in the Mesa Temple, but records have proved the Sarah Porter sealed to Samuel Church was the daughter of Hezekiah Porter of Woodbury. Because I know it was done wrong the first time, I will do it again to the right Sarah Porter. (JSP 4-18-07)
