Note | BIRTH Robert Porter was 79 years old when he died in 1843, making his birth in 1764. Since he lived in Woodbury his entire life, it is most likely he was also born there. He was born in the right time period to be in the John Porter family, the only Porter family in Woodbury and Bethlehem for which there were no vital records. BETHLEHEM TOWN RECORDS The first record we have of him is in 1791, again in 1792 and 1794 when he appears on a (tax) list. (Town Records of Bethlehem, 1761-1857, Mixed Records item 2, p. 114). In 1793 he was named one of the Freemen in Bethlehem (Town Records of Bethlehem, 1761-1857, Mixed Records, Family History Library film 1522,005, item 2.) He had 1 head cattle, no land, no home ownership, obviously a young man recently setting himself up. In 1794 Robert Porter was listed with a second pair cattle (19-02-0), but no land or home. Since his parents had both died and his step-mother had died in March of 1793, he may have been living in the family home without clear ownership. (Town Records of Bethlehem, 1761-1857, Mixed Records, Family History Library film 1522,005.) CHURCH RECORDS Robert Porter was very active in the Bethlehem Church of Christ, or Protestant Episcopal Church. He was among the first subscribers on 24 Feb. 1807 (Family History Library film 3802, Church records, Vol. 1.) Again he was listed in Vol. 4 as one of the original 16 members of the church in 1807. Robert Porter on the committee formed for taxation Nov. 1819 for church expenses and was either a committee member or, more often the moderator of that committee almost continuously from 1820 to 1831. His name appears on almost every list. (Family History Library film 3802) In the Bethlehem Protestant Episcopal Church records, Vol. 2 Robert Porter was again listed as a subscriber on Jan. 1, 1834. (Family History Library film 3802) In the Christ Church (Bethlehem, Connecticut Protestant Episcopal) records 1840 (Vol. 3) Robert Porter and wife were listed among the communicants. (Family History Library film 3802) GOSHEN Before he was married he apparently was in Goshen enough with his brothers Benjamin and John that the record keeper wrote his name at the top of a land record which was actually Benjamin's. It is recorded in the handwriting of the writer of the land record: "Robert Porter's deed of Nathan Hand," although only Benjamin Porter is listed in the record. Dated August 8, 1887, it appears to be evidence Benjamin and Robert were closely connected. (Land Records of Goshen, CT, Vol 7, p. 350, Family History Library film 4420, item 1.) DEATH In the Bethlehem Church of Christ, Vol. 4, his death is recorded "Robert Porter, age 79, died Dec. 5, 1843." (Family History Library film 3802.) There is no probate for him or his wives. Further information is given online on the website (http://www.esthersscrapbook.com/ConnecticutPorters.htm (April 23, 2012) "Six years after their parents married, John and Deborah married. They would become the parents of Robert Porter, the father of our Curtis, who ended up in Michigan....Bethlehem has put together websites with the names of all those buried in their three cemeteries. I have searched them, and I don’t find any other Porters besides Robert and his two wives (Betsey and Lucy) in the Old Cemetery and Robert and Lucy’s son Alfred with his wife and daughter in the New Cemetery. That is puzzling and frustrating." BURIAL Headstone Inscriptions of Bethlehem, CT, Family History Library book 974.61/B2 V3h, p. 16. "Robert Porter, age 79." REVOLUTIONARY WAR "A Robert Porter was 'bound out' in Bethlehem as a young boy to Dr. Bellamy. He entered the Revolutionary Army at 16 in 1776." (If his death record was correct he lied about his age at enlistment) "Bethlehem, A Primer of Local History, Family History Library book 974.61/B2 N2b, Founding Families. It appears no one knew 100 years later which family Robert belonged to. |
