BIRTH: Said to have been born in South Farms, Litchfield, CT. BIRTH and DEATH: "A Waugh Family History: John Waugh of Litchfield, CT., Milo and Elizabeth Waugh of Ohio and Indiana," Compiled by Patricia lee Waugh. CS71 W354 1986, NEHGS Library. (Also FHL 929.273 W357 wp, p. 10, 14.) On p. 15 is copied his Revolutionary War Pension Application, taken in Ross County, Ohio Oct. 19, 1832, stating his birth was verified in Litchfield by Mr. Strong who kept the vital records there. At that time Joseph claimed to his best recollection he was born in Litchfield Dec. 1762. His family was noted with birthdates in ("A Genealogical Register of the Inhabitants of the Town of Litchfield, Conn," by George C. Woodruff, FHL book 974.61/L1, D2w, p. 229.) REVOLUTIONARY WAR: He first served as a substitute for a Mr. Doolittle when he was about 14. He filed for pension from Ross County, Ohio Oct. 19, 1832, stating his birth was verified in Litchfield by Mr. Strong. He stated he entered as a substitute during 1776 for Mr. Doolittle for 3 months. At that time he went to Horse Neck on the East River near New York to guard against the B ritish and Tories. After returning home he again enlisted in the spring of the year that Genl. Arnold's treachery was discovered was sent to West Point under Capt. Watson and was in the vicinity for 6 months. Again he enlisted and was in "Danberry" for 3 months. Again enlisted as a substitute for his brother Thaddeus Waugh under Capt. Lindley in the fall, and continued on the high lands near Picks Hill until February when his brother came and took his own place. Leman Waugh signed deposition Oct 19, 1832. Pension was granted, and the widow filed 11 May 1855, (p. 19.) PENNSYLVANIA In 1789 his father sold his property in Litchfield and started west, stopping in Cumberland County, PA for a while. By 1791 they were in Washington County PA where Joseph Jr. married. On 22 Oct 1793 he bought 40 acres of land from Adam Kintner. It was located on the Monogahela River and was part of a warrent to John Redick made Feb. 27, 1787 and patent 16 Feb 1789 called "Mingo Camp." OHIO Soon after selling this land 25 Feb. 1798 to Francis Gardner, Joseph Jr. took his family to Buckskin Twp. of Ross Co. Ohio, He and his brother Leman owned land in surveys 4,036 and 3,975 on which they lived many years. (History of Ross and Highland Counties, Ohio.) DEATH Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Buckskin, Ross, Ohio, "Joseph D. Waugh d. Jan. 14, 1850, age 86 yrs. He lived a consistent member of the M.E. Church 46 years." They are buried at Waugh Hill Cemetery, located on Waugh Road. His inscription: "Joseph Waugh died Jan 14 1850; aged 86 years. He lived a consistent member of the M.E. Church 46 years."
