Later that house was published as one of the early artifacts of the county "The Birts, as well as the Darwin S. Morses who have owned the Cook-Andrews-Dorr-Morse house on the State Road for the last 40 years, discovered interesting examples of Yankee ingenuity in the use of materials at hand. The Birts found a layer of corncobs between ceiling and floor, and the Morses uncovered large sheets of birch bark carefully spread on the roof under the old shingles, evidently two early methods of insulation." (Richmond Mass. Story of a Berkshire Town, 1765-1965, Family History Library book 974.41/R1 H2a, p. 57.) WILL: Berkshire, Mass SLC film 873481 Vol 2, p. 192. (Copy in possession of Janet Porter) Although Lucy was married at that time, no married names were mentioned for his daughters. He left large pieces of land to Walter and Pitt and his home farm to his sons Isaac and John, to be divided with one-third to his wife until her death. CHURCH: He belonged to the Episcopal-Methodist Church ("The History of Goshen" by Hibbard, p. 158) DEATH His probate was presented at court July 26, 1780, but there is no record of his death. PROBATE Walter Cook estate was presented at probate court in Berkshire County July 26, 1780. In Probates Vol. 10, p. 2, 26-27, dated at Lenox April 2, 1799, Walter's son John Cook, "a non-compos person," was appointed a guardian. The distribution of Walter's estate was then presented to John and Isaac. (Family History Library film 873.485.) Three children were minors needing a guardian: "At a court held 26 July, 1780 came Ruhamah Cook, widow of Richmond," allowed to be guardian of Isaac, John and Asenah, minor children of Walter Cook, late of Richmond. (Probates of Berkshire County, MA, Vol. 2, p. 184b, Family History Library film 873,481.) RESEARCH: There is another Cook family nearby in Lenox.
