Note

BIRTH Barbour Collection of Wallingford Vital Records, Connecticut State Library, Vol. 48, p. 100. (Family History Librarybook 974.6 V2wl.) "Walter (Cook), s. Joseph and Eleaner, b. Dec. 21, 1722." Wallingford Vital Records citing 7:291. Also found on p. 3: Family History Library film 6052. Residence listed Goshen and Richmond, Mass ( "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 440. Ref. is Wallingford Vital Records.)

GOSHEN, LITCHFIELD, CT Land Records Walter Cook bought 50 acres in Goshen on Town Hill. Bounds Roger Pettibone, Lumbert Cook, 15 Nov. 1755 (Goshen Deeds, 3:404) He bought from his brother Lambert “a lott of land laid out to Joseph Cook and Merrinan and is the whole of the lot…bounded west on a highway, north on the said Walter Cook, East partly on Jeremiah How’s land and partly on Noah Waddam’s land, south on Eni Buell’s land.” House and barn thereon, 5 Nov. 1759 (Goshen Deeds 4:7)

On Dec. 14, 1772 he sold all his Goshen land, including the home farm to his brother Daniel Cook: (Vol. 5, p. 177 (Family History Library film 4,419) Walter Cook of Goshen for £230 sold Daniel Cook land in Goshen containing 56 acres, “the same land I purchased of Lumbert Cook and on which I now live, itt bounds west on highway, south on Moses Lyman’s land, east on Jeremiah How’s land, and part on Ens. Wadhams land. North on Zaccheus and Giles Griswold, Jun’s land, with a mansion house, a barn and shop.” In six weeks he bought land in Berkshire County, Mass.

BERKSHIRE COUNTY, MASS Land Records Winter Cook of Richmond bought land 20 June 1771. Witnesses Tyrannus Collins (Ruhamma's brother), Ambrose Hill. (Deeds Vol. 10:329) This is obviously Walter's deed, but they probably didn't know his name yet. (Family History Library film 872080) Samuel M. Clark of Lenox for 100 Lb sold to Walter Cook of Goshen, Litchf. CT land in Lenox-100 acres, the 24th lot in the 3rd Div. of Lenox "18 lots of which divisions are since they were laid out annexed to the jurisdiction of the town of Richmond." 4 Feb. 1773, Berkshire Deeds 12:241, (Family History Library film 872,081)

HIS HOUSE Walter Cook owned what came to be known as the Cook-Andrews-Dorr-Morse house in Richmond. Later that house was published as one of the early artifacts of the county "The Birts, as well as the Darwin S. Morses who have owned the Cook-Andrews-Dorr-Morse house on the State Road for the last 40 years, discovered interesting examples of Yankee ingenuity in the use of materials at hand. The Birts found a layer of corncobs between ceiling and floor, and the Morses uncovered large sheets of birch bark carefully spread on the roof under the old shingles, evidently two early methods of insulation." (Richmond Mass. Story of a Berkshire Town, 1765-1965, Family History Library book 974.41/R1 H2a, p. 57.)

WILL: Berkshire, Mass SLC film 873481 Vol 2, p. 192. His children are named: Walter, John, Isaac, Pitman Collins, Asenah, Lydia, Lucy, Eunice. His wife: Ruhamah. Will dated 13 March, 1777 and presented at court July 26, 1780. (Copy in possession of Janet Porter) Although Lucy was married at that time, no married names were mentioned for his daughters. He left large pieces of land to Walter and Pitt and his home farm to his sons Isaac and John, to be divided with one-third to his wife until her death.

CHURCH: He belonged to the Episcopal-Methodist Church ("The History of Goshen" by Hibbard, p. 158)

DEATH His probate was presented at court July 26, 1780, but there is no record of his death.

PROBATE Walter Cook estate was presented at probate court in Berkshire County July 26, 1780. In Probates Vol. 10, p. 2, 26-27, dated at Lenox April 2, 1799, Walter's son John Cook, "a non-compos person," was appointed a guardian. The distribution of Walter's estate was then presented to John and Isaac. (Family History Library film 873.485.) Three children were minors needing a guardian: "At a court held 26 July, 1780 came Ruhamah Cook, widow of Richmond," allowed to be guardian of Isaac, John and Asenah, minor children of Walter Cook, late of Richmond. (Probates of Berkshire County, MA, Vol. 2, p. 184b, Family History Library film 873,481.)

RESEARCH: There is another Cook family nearby in Lenox. Land records show them to be Selah, Daniel, Solomon and Henry H. Cook, "all of Lenox" (71:199) dated 6 May 1829. Another note against Selah Cook and sons dated April 1, 1827.

Note
