Note | BIRTH: Barbour Collection of Goshen Vital Records, Vol. 14, p. 44: "Abijah son (Samuell) b. Feb. 26, 1749, Citing 1:260) NEHGS Register, 54:274: "Abijah Norton, son of Ebenezer (of Goshen) was born Feb. 26, 1749 at Goshen." He lived at Cazenovia, N.Y.; m. Lucy, dau. of Walter Cook. Pedigree Resource CD #20 Pin #284463. Notes he married Lucy Cook. " History of Goshen, CT," by Rev. A. G. Hibbard, (FHL 974.61/G1 H2h, p. 513-4.) Land Records prove he was Samuel's son. GOSHEN, LITCHFIELD, CT Land Records Samuel Norton of Goshen for love and the good will I have for my son Abijah Norton of Goshen, give land in the east side of Goshen on the North part of the hill called Pond Hill. (Goshen Deeds, 5:372, FHL 4,419) Abijah sold that piece of land on 18 August 1773, possibly because he was moving to Berkshire Co., MA with Lucy's father Walter Cook. (Goshen Deeds 5:196.) A search of vital records in Goshen reveals they is no marriage nor children recorded in Goshen. RICHMOND, BERKSHIRE, MA Land Records: He bought and sold land from 1779 (22:68) to 1796 (36:437) Each time he was known as Abijah Norton of Richmond, Yeoman, or Farmer. He sold to his brother "Samuel Norton Jr. of Goshen, CT" 21 Jan. 1785 (19:231) On 26 April 1785 'Abijah Norton and Lucy Norton of Richmond sold Lucy's brother-in-law David Chapin land in Richmond, Lucy's inheritance from her father Walter Cook. (21:576) 1790 CENSUS: We know he was in Richmond from land records, but is not in the census. There is one Abijah Norton in Ballstown, Saratoga, NY. There are one male in the household over 16 and five females, which is consistent with his family. 1800 CENSUS: Stamford, Bennington, Vermont. There are one male and one female over 45, one female is 10-15, and one female 16-25. (.Roll: 51; Page: 140; Image: 81 on Ancestry.com) Since there is no Abijah for the 1810 Census, there may be only one of them. ONTARIO COUNTY, NY: He is not in land records or death records. Has been found only in Probate. DEATH: Probate Records of Ontario Co., NY show his death was Nov. 1805. 1. Surrogate Index 1789-1926 (FHL 834,755, p. 279-280) "Abijah Norton, Letters of Adm, 2:153, 1805." 2. Estate Index to Inventories of Early Residents of Ontario Co., N.Y., (FHL 1,769,004, no page number: "Abijah Norton, Nov. 18, 1805, Easton, New York." (JSP Note: Easton was the original name of the town. In 1805 it changed to Lincoln and in 1806 to Gorham.) 3. Estate Inventory Files, 1797-1822, FHL 1,765,340: Inventory of "Abijah Norton, late of Easton, N.Y., Nov. 18, 1805," The inventory is of farm and household goods. Total is $474.80. There are two notes against Joseph White. Inventory taken by Elijah Murray and William Goodman. Administratrix is Lucy Norton. John Russell is Administrator. There is a document here signed by Lucy Norton, administratrix dated 12 June 1811, proving her death was after that date. In Hibbard's History of Goshen he states Abijah died at Cazanovia, not quite true. |

Note | " History of Goshen, CT," by Rev. A. G. Hibbard, (FHL 974.61/G1 H2h, p. 513-4.) "Abijah Norton b. Feb. 26, 1749; m. Lucy Cook; d. Cazenovia, N.Y." The family had moved to Richmond by about 1773, so the marriage probably took place there. There is no marriage record either in Goshen or in Richmond. (JSP 11-2008) |
