Note | BIRTH: "Families of Ancient New Haven," Vol 1, by D L. Jacobus, 1923, p. 440. Ref. is Wallingford Vital Records. This record says he resided in Goshen. His name is spelled Lambert by the family, but Lumbert and Lumbard in land records, probably an indication of how it was pronounced. GOSHEN, LITCHFIELD, CT Land Records Lumbert Cook of Goshen for £180 sold Walter Cook of Goshen 56 acres in the town of Goshen. It is “a lott of land laid out to Joseph Cook and Merrinan and is the whole of the lot…bounded west on a highway, north on the said Walter Cook, East partly on Jeremiah How’s land and partly on Noah Waddam’s land, south on Eni Buell’s land.” House and barn thereon, 5 Nov. 1759, Vol. 4, p. 7 (FHL 4,418) Lumbert Cook of Goshen for 115 pounds sold land to his brother Daniel Cook of Goshen. it is in Goshen, a 50 acre lot "that I now live upon," (neighbors are Moses Lyman, Titus Hill and Zaccheus Griswold) and another piece bounding his home lot. Total 65 acres, sold 17 Dec. 1764. (Goshen Deeds 4:239, FHL 4,418) It was all his land in Goshen, and he never came back. RICHMOND, BERKSHIRE, MASS Original Proprietor's records show Lambert (Lumbard) was one of the earliest settlers: Surveys of Mt. Ephraim (later Richmond) "begin Lot 31, First Division to Lumbard Cook's house..." (Recorded at a meeting May 13, 1766.) (Proprietors Records, Middle Dist. Berkshire Co, MA, FHL 876,706, p. 76.) Berkshire Deeds show he bought land in Richmond, Berkshire, Mass on 14 Jul 1762 and 27 Jan 1763. His brother Walter was also in Richmond. In the book "Cooks or Cookes in Massachusetts before 1810," it states he lived in Richmond even before that. He was still in Goshen when he bought land Oct 29, 1764 (Berkshire Deeds 3:45) "Abraham Brown of Stockbridge for 60 pounds (sold)... Lumbard Cook of Goshen, Litchfield, Connecticut, yeoman, lot #31 in the First Division lying in a new plantation called Mt. Ephraim in the town of Becket." He sold land in Richmond Oct 30, 1769 (5:354) and January 27, 1773 (10:330) Lambert Cook's name is on the ledger kept by John E. Van Alen. Accounts were 1769-1771. Lambert's is dated Feb. 9, 1770. (Church and other Records, Pittsfield, Mass, FHL 234,571, Vol. 2, p. 342.) REVOLUTIONARY WAR: The History of Berkshire County, MA, by J. B. Beers, FHL (974.41 H2hb, Vol. 1, p. 190) states that Lambert Cook and (his nephew) Pitman Cook enlisted at Becket, Berkshire, MA. 1790 CENSUS: Stephentown, Albany, New York. Lambert Cook has two males over 16, none under 16, and 3 females in the household. Next door are Joseph and Levi, his sons. Other close neighbors are David Harris, David Warner, Birl Noh? and Ephraim Smith. WILL: The will of Lambert Cook, Stephentown, Rensselaer, NY dated 26 Dec. 1800. The following were named in his will: James (Joseph) Cook and Henry Tucker named as executors. They were to receive an inheritance of "the farm from Van Renssealer Patroon Estate;" Wife Mindwell Cook; Eldest son Levi Cook, Third son John Cook. Grandchildren Abigail Moore, Hannah Burrows, Charles Burrows and Henry Burrows, "children of my eldest daughter Hannah Burrows, wife of Isaac." Others named were Eleanor Vickery, wife of Caleb; Abigail Tucker, wife of Jonathan; Mindwell Tucker, wife of Henry, probably daughters. Witnesses are James H(amilton) Ball; Liberty Cressy; Stutia Cressy. DEATH: 1801. His will was written 26 Dec. 1800 and proved the following June. He was at Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., N.Y. RESEARCH: On p. 333 of the Wadsworth Ledger there appears. "Wid. Lambert Cook of Pittsfield, (which is odd because he wasn't at Pittsfield), 5-21-1793 to 4-10-1794." (FHL 234,571, Vol. 2, p. 333) He may have had a son named Lambert for whom we do not have a birth record. Since Lambert is on the 1790 Census at Albany, NY, it's difficult to understand who this widow is. I have chosen to ignore the Wadsworth Ledger. (JSP 10-08) RESEARCH: Lambert Cook is No. 97 of the Cook family in the website: http://www.geocities.com/ckhansgw/hcook.htm#Joseph34 |

Note | Barbour Collection of Marriages at Goshen, 1739-1854, Connecticut State Library, 1927, p. 16. This marriage was overlooked in The History of Goshen, by Hibbard, p. 449, possibly because Lambert moved away. |
Note | Barbour Collection of Vital Records, 1739-1854, Connecticut State Library, p. 16. Date is 1757. In "Marriages in Goshen," Family History book 974.61/G1 V2h, the date is given 1759. Goshen Vital Records Vol 1, p. 269 also gives the date 1757. (Family History Library film 2970.) |
